I guess it's kind of an unfair thing is that I love Bridges it's almost all of them get five stars. This one's no exception. I'm told it was the predecessor to the Golden Gate. And just for those people out there then don't know any better oh, it is not a Gothic style bridge is an art deco-style Bridge. Beautiful nonetheless

This amazing example of neo-Gothic bridge design features two towers rising over 400 feet in height. The only suspension bridge in the Willamette Valley. One of three major suspension bridges in Oregon. It was designed by reknowned engineer David Steinman and has a 205 ft. navigational clearance. Steinman himself called it "the most beautiful bridge in the world." It is a marvel to drive across. Although it has pedestrian sidewalks on both sides and specific look-out balconies built in at each tower, crossing it afoot can be sort of risky.
When I crossed it on foot, a semi truck eighteen wheeler was coming over it toward me and he honked his horn at me to get off of the bridge, as if there were no sidewalk. It is a rather narrow sidewalk. The bridge is the most lyrical in design and most stunning in appearance of all of the Portland bridges. There is not another like it in the Pacific northwest.
Certainly it is the most photographed of all of the bridges that span the Willamette River. It is the bridge that is closest to the convergence of the Willamette and the Columbia River. It is my favorite bridge in all of Oregon.

While my boyfriend and I took the bus to get to St. Johns (it was about an hour and 15 minute drive) it was totally worth it! We loved walking around the town and walking over this bridge was so much fun! Although if you are afraid of heights not sure if this would be ideal. It was sunny and clear out so you could see the city from the bridge! Not many tourists make it out this way since it is not an attraction but if you enjoy being outside and architecture definitely go!

Very cool (if a little narrow) bridge. . . . cute community on the other side. We went to the John Street Cafe for breakfast. . . wonderful.

Running the Portland Marathon in 2005 was one of the greatest trips of my life! Coming with Ladies from Utah to run was a blast. The marathon course was scenic; City, Outlining, and the Bridges!!! The St. Johns bridge is a tough part of the marathon, but so beautiful on approach, especially on foot! Spanning the river with the Portland hills on the west, with river and neighborhood on the east, was a spectacular view. I love bridges and this one is one of the more beautifully built in Portland. Now I live here and appreciate the beautiful Portland bridges even more, especially while viewing at night with bridge lights reflecting in the river.

What a work of the imagination! What a gorgeous bridge!
And underneath it there's Cathedral Park. The whole thing seems inspired by some higher power.

Gothic spires towering high over the Willamette River, on a crisp, clear day heading into St Johns at the center of the bridge, you can spot snow capped Mt Hood to the right, towing above the river and Portland. As you turn to the left, is Mt Adams, Mt St Helens and if you know where to look, the glistening top of mt Rainier...four snowy volcanic peaks in one viewing. Mt Adams is the mt framed by the bridge staright ahead as you face St Johns. behind is Forest Park's hilly evergreen backdrop. A walk across the bridge is a must. There are no bad photos taken of or from the St Johns bridge. Hard to describe, harder to forget the experience.

St. Johns Bridge is one of the three suspension bridges in Oregon , and tallest bridge in the city of Portland , connecting between Cathedral park on the North side to Linnton Northwest side , not as famous like Golden Gate or Brooklyn , but beautiful outstanding historical landmark , best of all No Toll , the best view is at the Cathedral Park , just Magnificent

We had no idea that the prototype for the Golden Gate Bridge is in Portland. It was fun to see it. There's a nice park with lots of green space underneath it.

This is one of the most famous, loved, and walked bridges in the Portland area. Originally built as the test for the Golden Gate, the gothic spires soar majestically over the road and walkways.

Which side of the river gives better access to the base of the bridge - the east (through Cathedral Park) or the west?

US 30 into Portland from the North passes under the St. John's when I was last on the hwy itself this was a very trashy area on the south side I have not been in Cathedral Park in area that was once it's own city (St. John's) but I ran a marathon in 1977 that took the runners through the park and all I could see was the bridge so I would need to rely on the south side for the best camera shot.
