This beautiful work of man’s craftsmanship stands today amidst an inner-city secluded area inspiring meditation and solemnity inspiring self-contemplation and thoughtful introspection in nature’s beauty within a 62-acre ecological enclave. One can leisurely, yet wondrously meander the walk paths of this remarkable garden/park to quietly ponder, picnic or serenely contemplate the open seclusion of nature’s marvelous wonder. When visiting Portland, this is a must visit – enjoy a couple of hours of tranquility. It is truly a gem and isolated treasure within the bustle of the city.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 November 2023

Big free parking lot within the premises. The whole complex consists of two parts - lower and upper. Lower part is free, the upper paying. The main star - Pieta in the Grotto is in the lower part and looks majestic. Also, in the lower part is the Way of the Cross - beautiful path through the woods, as well the Cathedral and visitor center. Kind lady at the visitor center played a movie for only two of us explaining the Sanctuary history, which was interesting and informing. Here you can buy big dedicated candles to light them by Pieta. The upper part is reachable via elevator and consists mostly of international shrines. Our visit was very spiritual and interesting and took us slightly over an hour, highly recommend.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 31 May 2024

We enjoyed strolling thru both upper and lower levels. Our time ended with some prayers.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 July 2024
- B4Travel2San Jose, California319 contributionsA beautiful sanctuaryThe Grotto is a beautiful sanctuary owned by the Catholic Church, but open to everyone. It is an oasis of lush gardens, walking trails, a beautiful glass-walled chapel with a view overlooking the mountains, trees, and vistas. They hold a Saint Peregrine Mass, as St. Peregrine is the Patron Saint of cancer and life-threatening illnesses, and people often go to these masses that are looking for solace, peace, spiritual healing, and support. We first heard of it from my uncle who was battling cancer. When visiting relatives from out of state, we came here to look around. We came in December, so it was cold. At night they have a Festival of Lights, but the group I was with were all too cold to want to stay at night. In December, they also had a life-sized nativity scene outside, in front of the rocks. It just all gives a sense of beauty and peace, and is a great place to go if you are needing some quiet introspection, want to have a peaceful walk, meditate, or, if battling an illness and want to attend the masses, to feel some uplifiting support. There was even a proposal happening, with flower petals strewn into the shape of a large heart while we were there, as the ambience is so serene. People travel from far distances to visit the Grotto. It gives you a sense of peace, serenity, and nature. It is good for the soul.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 16 August 2024

The Holiday Lights are up and beautiful. Varying and a really good Grotto Carolers perform live Christmas music nightly in the chapel and outdoor tent. Lovely spot outdoors in Nature with a charming Friar Catholic Chapel. A large basalt cliff holds a shrine alter and daytime can take an elevator or wooded trails to gardens and a meditation area with large cross overlooking a North view to Washington State.

I visited the Grotto on Easter Sunday. It was a rainy day, but it didn't spoil the spiritual experience of being there. I went up to the higher level and peacefully walked the paths that winded around various statues, a labyrinth, and prayer spots. The gift shop had a host of religious and spiritual objects, books, candles, etc.

The upper garden was definitely worth visiting. Took about half an hour to walk around and then time to look out from the observation deck. Token for lift up to gardens was $9.95 and you can see the shrine for free.

Independent of your religious beliefs, this is a really nice place to visit. Many people have come here over the years and it vibrates with good energy. It is a good place to pray, heal, or enjoy the scenery with a nice walk. I found the observatory which had tall beautiful windows and I got to enjoy the sunset. Would recommend!

Who knew. I've lived in Portland for 40 years and have been to The Grotto a number of times, but like everyone else, I only went at Christmas when the full display of lights turns it into a magical place. I knew nothing of the upper garden, a beautiful place with meandering pathways, chapels, shrines, ponds and a world away from just outside The Grotto's gates. Although it was a nice day on our visit, it was still winter. Yet, I can imagine what a great place it would be to escape to in the heat of summer as its towering fir trees provide infinite shade. Walk the circular maze in sheer contemplation. You don't have to be religious to enjoy this hidden gem.

We paid to do the upper gardens and it is worth it. Very beautiful gardens and lots to look at it. This time of year some things were in bloom but I bet it’s pretty in the spring when the roses and other plants bloom as well. We did the labyrinth which was fun. Takes no more then 1 1/2 - 2 hours to see everything.

My 13 year old daughter and I travelled to Portland and visited The Grotto. We attended noon mass then toured the beautiful grounds and meditation chapel on the hillside. Absolutely beautiful setting and amazingly meaningful in our journey of prayer with the Blessed Mother. Very easy walking and nicely paved fir wheelchairs or strollers.

Who’s important this place on the faith? I tried to look online but didn’t find anything. Is any apparition of the Virgin?
Written 18 August 2018
While dogs are not allowed on the upper level, they are allowed outdoors on the first level, both in the plaza and in the botanical garden. The Grotto holds special events throughout the year, including a Blessing of the Animals each July. Well-behaved leashed dogs are allowed.

Written 6 August 2016
From the FAQ of the Grotto website:
Pets
Properly restrained pets are allowed on the grounds of the lower level. No pets are allowed on the upper level, or in the buildings. Service animals are allowed in all areas of The Grotto.
I didn't see anyone with pets when i visited there.

Is there public transportation from the downtown area to the Grotto?
Written 19 July 2016
Yes you can get to the Grotto from downtown by taking a tri-met bus.
if you caught a bus at SW 6th and W Burnside (Stop ID 792):
Board 12-Barbur/Sandy Blvd to Parkrose TC
(The Grotto stop is ID 5046)
this option is estimated to take 37 minutes travel time.
Trimet has a web site. They are and organization. (trimet + org) They have a trip planner that you can use to plan a trip with to get there. Just type in where you are going to and where you are starting from. It will generate a potential trip plan that will tell you the details. And options you have.
and you can enter a different starting place closer to where you will be downtown.
Adult one way far is $2.50

Hi, we are planning a pilgrimage for April, visiting a Holy Door and spending time meditating. This sounds exactly what we are looking for. Wherever we will be staying is a problem since there is no transportation. Public transportation is ok but we must walk quite a bit distance to bus stops, which I am unable to do. Is there a regular shuttle that goes from the Grotto to different areas around? We are thinking something like San Diego has that people can get off and on at their leisure at different sites. Thank you.
Written 15 March 2016
There is not a shuttle I am aware of. That would be lovely if there was! Maybe call The Grotto & inquire, perhaps they will have a suggestion. I found everyone very helpful! Enjoy! Can't wait to return! Blessings.
