Crappy parking, vagrants roaming around like ants and not a lot to offer on a brisk Saturday in February... If you live in this squalor I am sure it seems normal, those of us who do not reside in a major city seem to find it disgusting as we did....:(

We visited the University of Portland market location on a Saturday. Coming from Fayetteville, AR believe it or not, we have a wonderful farmer's market but there's just nothing to prepare you for the amazing colors and smells and sounds of this market! Oh the flowers! Oh the berries! I loved the little boy playing his keyboard with 1/2 of all donations going to the food bank. So Portland. The Portland acapella adult choir was singing and were terrific!
There were fruits and veg I haven't really seen before! Just go.

We love to eat and we love to explore local options when we travel. On our trip to Portland, we decided to spend a Saturday morning at the PSU Farmers Market. We have been to some amazing markets so we came in with high expectations.
First, let me outline all the great positives. There is a large variety of produce and prepared foods, so you don't feel like you keep saying the same options from 20 vendors. We bought blueberries, strawberries, cheese and butter, a baguette from Pearl Bakery (a standout!), Nutella croissants, a pork tamale, a lamb dosa (it was incredible!), Greek salame from Olympia Provisions, Popsicles, fresh brewed coffee, and gin from Townshend's. We also did a wine tasting with a local winery hard a booth there.
Most booths were cash only but I noticed a few customers used wooden tokens so I believe they bought those from the market info booth.
I walked by a very crowded area with live music and limited seatIng. There was free cold water in a giant Gatorade dispenser and stations to leave your trays for specific vendors. I hadn't noticed that earlier so I walked back to each vendor who had given me food on a tray to return my empty tray.
The market is very crowded and more so today due to PSU graduation. There was very limited seating for anyone wishing to eat their snacks (we sat on some steps), very narrow walkways, and lots of oblivious people standing in the middle just spacing outand blocking other pedestrians. Thus, that colored my experience and led me to deduct one star. Other farmers markets we have visited had ample seating for guests (often folding chairs provided by vendors as opposed to assuming customers can seat on the steps or in the limited park benches).
Still, I'm glad we went and explored some great food options.

I was in Portland on Business and walked by the farmers' market on my way to the Oregon Hist. Society Museum. This is a nice, friendly farmers' market with lots of free samples. I tasted the best nectarine I've ever had! (Baird Family Orchard - White Nectarine). I brought some nectarines, peaches and a wonderful cookie back to my hotel room and enjoyed them over the next couple of days.
I've been to other farmers' markets, but none with this many free samples. Even if you don't want to buy anything, you'll have fun looking around and tasting some wonderful foods. In my short time there, I sampled four different fruits, homemade chocolates, a chocolate-dipped lemon shortbread cookie, and some other shortbread cookies.
There are also some vendors selling pizza, tamales, and other ethnic foods. Alas, I'd recently eaten lunch, so I wasn't hungry.
I was here on business, but this market would be great for couples and families, too.

We spent a couple of hours this morning searching for the Market at this address and another incorrect address that Google maps directed us to. We eventually found it on South Park and Market Street. It is a terrific farmer's market but frustrating that we wasted so much time trying to locate it. Make sure you check the address before you set out and don't rely on the "get directions" button as it will send you to the wrong place.

Hello Steve,
We're sorry it was frustrating to find our market. Business listings are challenging for us because we have multiple markets throughout the week, but search results often show our administrative office. We are working hard to figure out the best way to let customers know where our markets are located to avoid confusion.
We always recommend visiting our website at www.PortlandFarmersMarket.org to find market locations and avoid Google map confusion.
We are happy to hear you enjoyed the market once you found it, and hope you return next time you're in town!

We had the most wonderful breakfast we have ever experienced at such a market. The grounds and trees were so delightful, as was the music being played all around us. Met so many wonderful people, it was such a pleasure. And the local famers so nice, loved the lavender goodies we picked up, love it! So enjoy frequenting the local markets on our travels, it is such a lovely experience, to connect with the locals like this, in a place that is so mindful of their actions and harvest. Thank you for being there. :-)

I've been to quite a few farmers markets in different cities and this one was the best. I was blown away by the selection of fruits/veggies but also all the other great artisanal items like cheeses, salamis, honey, liquors and so on. I could have spent hours and hundreds of dollars here (I did neither). There were also lots of great prepared foods and drinks not to mention just a really pretty place to walk and relax on this campus quad. The vendor were universally friendly and eager to share samples to entice you with their handmade goods. Definitely worth a visit if it is open.

The Portland Farmers Market (not to be confused with the Portland Saturday Market, which is something completely different) was recently ranked as the #2 Farmers Market in the US. The fresh produce dazzles the senses....mounds of giant Walla Walla onions, twenty types of peppers, succulent melons. Bring a cart....you do not want to carry a Hermiston melon five blocks back to your car! If you don't want to shop, go for the photo opportunities. Lots of food stands....there is usually a reason why some have very long lines....worth the wait at Salvador Molly's Tamales. During the summer months there is a smaller market on Wednesday during the day. No dogs, unless they are service animals. Plan to eat in for the next few nights, creating Food Channel-worthy dishes with all your fresh veggies.

Some of the most amazing, fresh produce I have seen in my life. Samples and tastings galore! Go here around lunch time and graze all the while listening to some local music. Loved this place!

Hi Valerie,
Dogs are not allowed at our PSU Farmers Market, primarily for safety reasons due to large crowds. You are welcome to bring your dog to any of our neighborhood farmers markets, however.
Service dogs are allowed at all times in the market.
Thanks,

Are there any market open on the Friday of the Thanksgiving weekend? We are flying out early on Saturday...but, maybe there is something special planned for that weekend?
Written 1 November 2015
I don't know of any that will be open that day. If you do a search for the PSU Saturday market, it has several links to information. Good luck.

Hi Amber- I'm sorry you missed the Portland Farmer's Market at PSU. There *are* tents and tents of fresh fruits and veggies there. Based on your description you didn't go to the Farmer's Market, but instead went to the Saturday Market (which is also held on Sunday, but still called Saturday Market) in Old Town and along waterfront park. It's the 'crafty' market with no fruit/vegetables. They're two totally different markets, in different parts of downtown.

I went to the one downtown. It was great!

Did you go the Farmer's Market or the Saturday Market? The Farmers market is for food only and is on the PSU campus, the Saturday Market is at Waterfront Park and is mostly crafts with some food. Many people get them confused - I have notice several people refer to crafts which isn't at the Portland Farmers Market at all. The Beaverton Farmers Market in downtown Beaverton has both food, produce, prepared foods & a craft booths.
