Room was not as described on Airbnb, not noticed we could not even have guests visit. Front desk clerk followed people around saying she would need to be with them and told my niece she could carry our stuff upstairs but would then need to leave.
The tubs temps were lower than a basic hot tub and people have to register to use them at $20 an hour. We checked in walked around and were followed then checked out. We never even unloaded our stuff I was so disappointed. It’s no longer an asylum but you feel like it still is. Space not worth $259 a night and I’ve never been treated so rudely by staff. Won’t be returning for sure. Airbnb host basically said too bad so sad and that their staff are always polite. That was 100% not our experience.

Called hours ahead to inquire about lodging options and was told about the various options. After talking extensively with one worker, she said I could decide when I arrived as we were considering the property next door (apparently same owner). I then drove 3 hours to arrive close to dusk. I parked in front of the lobby and ran over to get a photo of the stream rising before it was too dark. There were no other people, guests or visible signs. Within 30 seconds a woman comes out and aggressively yells at me " You need to leave the property NOW". No hello, no welcome, no "are you a guest here?" or possibly "are you checking in?"...nothing but malicious and aggressively rude talking down at me that I know better than to be here and need to leave "NOW". Unbelievable and actually psycho. I never even had a chance to explain myself and the ugly treatment made me seething mad after driving so long and looking forward to finally relaxing. The worker deserved to be popped in the mouth for how she thought she could speak to me and I told her so, even made a fake gesture since she was insanely demanding me to leave and willing to call the cops. FOR TAKING A PICTURE, with no other people there, with my car running in front of the lobby while the disabled friend I was traveling with was waiting - as we were about to go into the lobby to check in & speak with them about the options we had called ahead about. UNREAL and truly possessed as old reviews and stories about the place have since come to light. Then went over to the other property and the owner was there, came at me the same way and snatched the paperwork out of my hand. Did not care how we were treated. These people need a lesson in hospitality and hotel management. Have traveled 15 countries and all throughout states to hot springs and 2-5 star hotels and never in my life have ever been treated in this manner from any hotel / property staff. They do not deserve to be in business. End of story.

We really enjoyed our stay here. Our downstairs room had brand new air conditioner units that made our stay very comfortable. The mattress was not too hard or too soft. The soaking tubs were great and usable 24/7. Left our skin super soft. It's a rustic hotel and that's what we expected, all amenities worked and we were comfortable.

My husband and I stayed in room 213 and I cannot recommend it enough. It is a second floor corner room with a great view, excellent AC and a beyond comfortable bed. The hotel is lovely. Yes, there are parts of it actively being worked on, but the parts that have been completed are a wonderful mix of vintage and modern style. They have managed to preserve many of the little design details that make this such a unique place. The staff is super helpful and friendly. The soaking tubs are FANTASTIC, open 24/7 and are cleaned daily. We loved soaking at night so we could watch the stars and stare out into the calm lake (it can be pretty windy during the day). I cannot wait to see how the rest of this place turns out. The beer/wine/cider available at the front desk is a nice touch and La Grande is 15 mins away for dining. The general calm and quiet of the large building and lack of TVs in the rooms lend to a very peaceful and relaxing experience. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer. We can't wait to go back.

The Lodge, through my lens. First thing is first; No, it is not haunted. People came out to test the place to no avail at finding anything paranormal, the rumors are just local folklore. I spent a few months here in the summer of 2024. My husband and I took work camp jobs at the neighboring RV park, and I got to spend some time working and relaxing at the Lodge. This old building has been through a lot over the years. It has been a place where people were born, healed, and died. It’s been transformed, burnt, abandoned, and restored. The restoration is still in process. Let’s say this is a labor of love. The locals all know about the place, and everyone has a memory or story. I sat in the lobby one day sipping cold water with an elderly lady who was born there. She brought her relatives to come to see the place even though she wasn’t up to the walk up the stairs to the room where her life began. She glowed when she spoke of the place and the Union Museum where she volunteers to educate people on the Lodge and all the local history. The lodge is a place to relax, spend time with loved ones, breathe deeply, and slow down. Walking into the lobby seems to transform you into another time when life was simpler, and people connected. When you visit, be sure to say hi to Rocky, he will let you know if he is up for pets or not, he’s in charge of the place, and like most cats, has opinions. This is a must-visit stop in Oregon, if it's not for a weekend in a room, or a soak in the tubs, you must drop into the tavern for refreshments and a look around the common area. Be sure to ask the staff where you can go as things are still being renovated and some areas are off limits for the privacy of the guest, but there is plenty to take in, and you will want to come back again.

Very intriguing place set in an old sanitarium way out in the middle of nowhere. I wanted to see the old-timey medical equipment upstairs but unfortunately that was only accessible to hotel guests. I came while on a business trip to Pendleton… I love hot springs so I wanted to check this out.
The springs setting was really unique, with several tubs and stone pools set alongside a steaming hot lake. It was super relaxing and rejuvenating.

The springs were absolutely as advertised, old time character, great use of the natural resources. The lodge needs considerable work, but that's in process. Just the nature of dated architecture with too much roof area, wooden exterior detailing in a tough environment, both with La Grande winters & the mineral springs caustic nature. Well built interior, very comfortable rooms with AC up to the task of La Grande summers.
The surprise of our visit may have been the filtered spring water available throughout. Very crisp and no sign of the typical spring odors.

It’s hard to characterize this place as anything but haunted. It’s a massive sanitarium that they are very slowly remodeling. The bar was great with light bites and beers. The hot springs were lovely too. But the hotel has a very ghosty vibe. There are many many rooms, but they have only renovated a dozen. So it’s super big. And super empty. Our room (Dr. Mohan’s office) had a tub and toilet. There is one communal shower on the floor. It’s listed as an Airbnb not hotel probably because of its Uber kooky vibe.

My friend and I recently stayed here for a night. It happened to be a night that was rainy, windy and even a little snow, but even tho the hot tubs were outdoors it still was enjoyable and worth the time we spent together.
Pros:
• The service was friendly and informative.
• The food in the restaurant and great. We had the meatballs, a wrap and especially the queso chorizo with chips were yummo!
• The breakfast was suitable and did offer several dairy and gluten free options: coffee w/ almond milk, hard boiled eggs, granola bars, oatmeal, oranges and apples. For non-gluten free they also had a variety of bagels. A tray to carry the items would have been great.
• We had a room that actually was two separate rooms with a bed in each, so we could be together but also as friends have our private space.
• We only had the share a hot tub once during our stay. Mostly everyone spaced out.
Cons:
• Our room only had a bathtub (we knew from our confirmation email) but at least there was a hallway bathroom with a shower
• The beds were quite firm, as were the pillows. Not the most comfortable.
• I wish that the restaurant had some dessert options.
• The movie only plays once a night, so you either go or you don’t. Luckily, it was not a movie I was interested in.
• You hear every person walking down the hall, every creak in the floor, every time the train goes by. Not a quiet, restful night’s sleep.

I went to this amazing hotel with my family for 3 days on July 2024. I loved the location, the building, the atmosphere, and so much more. Once we arrived, the staff members were friendly and helpful. We got a lot of good information on how to access our rooms, how to get the right kind of water, where we could eat, how to get to the hot springs , etc. Our room was great! The staff members are all so friendly and helpful! I also enjoyed the little theater they had, showing movies for a small price. The hot springs were amazing. There were 5 hot springs and a cold plunge, plus some chairs and 2 little fireplaces. Amazing views , amazing waters, and overall just an amazing atmosphere. Thank you Hot Lake Springs, I highly recommend this beautiful place, and we will definitely come again!

George, its been many years, but did you ever receive your Bronze " Shoshone Moon" from David Manuel ? If so, can you tell me what you paid for it? I have an edition of Shoshone Moon in my Gallery from an Estate and we are trying to determine a current value for the piece. Hot Lakes is permanently closed and I cannot contact Manuel.....if he is even alive. Thank you for your help,
