- Anita H3 contributionsExcellet hotel. Would definitely stay again. This is a perfect place to stay for the Mt. Hood area. The hotel was fairly new so had all the current amenities. This was one of our favorite hotels on a 20 day road trip. The setting is awesome. They had a hot breakfast with lots of options. The room was clean and welcoming and had all the standard amenities. Would recommend this hotel to anyone.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 October 2023
- Tansy2015Michigan408 contributionsCold, windy, bright, beautifulMay 6, 2024. 32° blowing snow bright and very cold. They just got 16 inches of snow in the past 24 hours and another 2 inches while we were there. We drove a very small car and it was fine until you got into the parking lot, which was not plowed and full of snow, snow and slush, but I love this mountain and the lodge. Doesn’t get any better than this!Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 6 May 2024
- Granny Travels SoloSeattle, Washington6 contributionsTimberline Lodge (Mt Hood) - beautiful views, good food, and warm fireplaces.Timberline Lodge at Mt. Hood is a wonderful historic lodge with many dining options, fabulous fireplaces, impressive craftsmanship, and stunning views in many directions. I did not stay overnight, so cannot comment on the rooms. During my May 2024 day excursion, there were many snowboarders having fun. This granny travels solo (ADA), so the Mt. Hood Shuttle Express was a terrific and economical option to get to Timberline Lodge (Mt. Hood) from Sandy, OR. As of May 2024, one-way was $2, or all-day pass for $5 (cash only, no digital pmt). Took about one hour each way. Their online schedule may differ slightly during heavy snow or high winds.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 13 May 2024
- nowpackingDallas, Texas4,219 contributionsStunning Mount HoodWe drove out towards Mount Hood and stopped at multiple places to capture the changing views! Absolutely beautiful views from the lavender fields, the vineyards and orchards. But the most stunning views were from Trillium Lake! Go in the morning and if they are charging $10, gladly pay it!Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 August 2024
- southerncaligirl72California800 contributionsPretty views !Always wanted to visit Mount Hood when visiting Portland. You can always see this beautiful mountain flying over the city. Stopped at Bigfoot center in Boring since it was on the way. We first drove up to the Timberline Lodge. Nice rustic hotel with lots of history. Took a hike up the mountain and saw some waterfalls. Beautiful views!Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 September 2024

This is a gorgeous full day trip to experience all there is to see. I wished I had more time to explore. We started at noon on a beautiful fall day in October and ran out of light around 6:00 PM.
We started at the Portland airport and drove east along I-84 and the Columbia River. At Hood River, we hung a right and went south down Hwy 35. Where it intersected with Hwy 26; we hung another right and headed west back to Portland. The whole drive is 140 miles or 2 hrs and 45 minutes with no stops. Most of the time you cannot see Mt. Hood. It's either hidden from view by the trees and mountain ridges or there are clouds. Seeing Mt. Hood is cool, but it's not the only reason to do this circle.
The I-84 portion of the trip north of Mt. Hood is the Columbia Gorge. It's simply beautiful. Wahkeena and Multnomah Falls were accessible with no real hike. Plan to spend the morning along this section.
Lunch was at Hood River where you turn south. There were not a ton of options, but the river front area and brewery were perfect for us.
Hwy 35 along the eastern side of Mt. Hood is the Fruit Loop. I did not know it was there until we started seeing apple, pear and other fruit orchards. Dozens and dozens of road stands, markets and restaurants sell fresh fruit. The whole stretch is fun and beautiful. Find a spot that does cider tasting flights.
Along the southern side of the mountain, look for Government Camp and roads up into the mountain. This is the portion we had to skip due to time limit. Had we started earlier in the day we could have gone up the mountain to see the snow and views. In Government camp, there were some breweries to try out.
I highly recommend this drive!

This mountain is breathtakingly beautiful. You must visit to experience the beauty for yourself. We visited in July, 2021, and the weather was perfectly clear, and there was a lot of snow on the mountain. Being a photography nut, I took a ton of pretty pictures

We were going to go up to Timberline Lodge, but it was snowing hard - on May 2nd! So we kept on going over the pass. On the way back we could see this beautiful mountain from a distance. It is truly spectacular from down on the Columbia River near Hood River.

My birth place and such a beautiful drive any time of the year with lots of scenery, places to stop and taste the wonderful fruit and goodies along the way. Fruit Loop is a joy to go on. All the way from Hood River to Odell, to Parkdale, Dee and back to Hood River and seeing the majestic beauty of The Hood just about wherever you drive. Takes my breath away every time I see it.

Visiting Mt. Hood is a must do if you travel through Oregon. There are so many activities and places to visit. Hiking, skiing, biking, and exploring the quaint towns is always available any time of the year! Just a short drive and you can be on the Columbia River having fun with water sports or just relaxing at the beach.

Majestic view. You don't get to see the mountain easily since the top can be quickly covered by clouds at any time. Check the weather before you go and you should be able to admire the beautifully rugged mountain in a distance.

Was here 40 years ago, it was then and I believe still is today, the premiere single Mountain in America. Skiers still on the slopes in June. Go to Trillium Lake for a great view of the Mountain.

Hi All- We have a full day scheduled for Mt Hood next week (July). Driving up to the Timberline Ski area from Govt Camp.
1. Are the ski parking lots open in summer?
2. Do we just walk over to the Magic Mile lift and pay there to ride? And can we ride the Palmer lift to the top?
Thanks! MarkFL

We have a 1 day trip planned to this area, including Timberline Lodge and waterfalls. How bad are the roads for motion sickness? We have 2 kids (9 and 7) that tend to get sick. I plan on using Dramamine. Any experience from other travelers or families? Thank you!
Written 15 July 2019
The roads definitely have some twists & turns but I wouldn't consider them to be horrible. Driving the speed limit helps & definitely no reading or watching your phone, ipad or tv from the backseat. Of course, I'm used to what we call, 'kiss your butt' curves where the turns double over on each other going up & down towards the Smokies, & in eastern Tennessee.

I'll be driving to Mt. Hood from near Bend. And it's only a day trip - what to do besides the magic mile ride? Thanks.

There is a ski resort lodge at the top area where parts of The Shining movie were filmed. Very historic, interesting place. Visited it last summer when we stayed in Hood River

To visit Mt Hood....day trip or do you need a few days? We will have a 9 y/o, so family friendly is a must.

The actual mountain? It is a long day trip from Hood River. There is a great ranger site south of the town that gives lots of info. There are not many places to eat sobpack food and drinks. It is very much a make your own fun place, hiking and walking. Timberline Lodge is a must but gets very busy for lunch. We were stunned by the scenery but we are old fogeys, not sure how long a 9 year old can sit and coo st scenery, no matter howcamazing

I'm thinking of bringing my kids to Mt hood for spring break, do you think I should worry about them getting altitude sickness driving up? If you ever been up to koke'e on Kaua'i, HI. is the road anything like that? How is the drive there from Portland? Thanks
Written 4 January 2019
We had no problems with altitude, it's not too high but we didn't try to trek all the way to the top.
Local roads were good as was parking.

Trying to remember a scenic drive fro Hillsboro near Portland up past a number of waterfalls and a real zig zag little road that ultimately took us up the back way to Timberline Lodge at Mount Hood. It's been years since we did it, and I can't remember the route and details.
Written 4 September 2018
Highway 26 around the south end of Mt. Hood. You go through Gresham, Sandy, Estacada and up through Government Camp to get to the Timberline lodge. The waterfall ally route is on the old highway, on Highway 30 but can’t be accessed because of the fires last year.

Is er een mogelijkheid om een tocht per paard (begeleid) te boeken?
Written 27 April 2018
I'm not sure about that. I'm sorry I couldn't help you more. I don't remember seeing anything like that but there could be. I would call the resort and ask them if I were you. I'm really sorry I couldn't help you.
Thank You
Terry

Am I likely to experience altitude sickness if I drive from Oregon City to Timberline Lodge and back in one day? Will be lodging in Oregon City.
Written 30 January 2018
I do not think you will not experience any altitude sickness, but take it easy to start with.
