I have been coming here for 20 years and never heard of this place until I moved here to live. Melodie gives a personalized guided tour with many stories and great detail. My friend who is a nurse greatly enjoyed the history dating back to WWI.

I recently visited the Lost Art of Nursing Museum in Cannon Beach for the second time. Although I'm not a nurse myself, I work in a hospital and know a LOT of nurses, so this is a fascinating place to visit. This visit I brought along a friend who is an Army critical care nurse, having told her many times how much she'd enjoy it. I was right!

The Lost Art of Nursing Museum is the of a lifetime spent collecting all things nursing by founder Melodie Chenevert, RN. Her personal mission to preserve the diverse history of nursing, from a time when nursing was celebrated in song and verse to more contemporary times has evolved into an exhibit that encompasses an entire floor of her home in Cannon Beach.

This collection covers the gamut from children's toys, books, kitschy souvenirs, marketing materials from pharmaceutical and medical supply businesses and war-time propaganda, to fine art (some truly beautiful canvasses) -- all celebrating the practice of nursing from Florence Nightingale to present times. This is not a dusty compendium of neglected artifacts -- Ms. Chenevert obviously loves and cherishes each item in her collection. She also has fascinating facts about every single item. She is as fascinating as the hundreds of nursing-related items in her collection. Some of the items in this museum she has purchased (amazingly, many for pennies at garage sales and thrift stores), and many items have been donated by other nurses. Some of those donated items have developed their own separate stories through a series of coincidences.

Visitors may purchase lithographs of much of the art in this collection, some of which feature Ms. Chenevert's lovely poetry in tribute to nurses. My friend was amazed at the stories she had never heard before despite nearly three decades as a nurse.

This museum is open on Saturday afternoons during the summer, and by appointment all year round. As I mentioned, the museum is located in a private home, but is set up so nicely it isn't the least bit awkward. Ms. Chenevert does not charge an admission, but will accept donations that enable her to maintain and protect the exhibits.

Whether you are a nurse, you know a nurse, or simply are interested in the profession of nursing, this museum is a must-see!
