Visited the Wetland Centre on a quiet Saturday afternoon with my partner and two month old son expecting a nice little scenic walk with lots to see. Unfortunately this was anything but the case. After grabbing a coffee from the cafe and venturing out, we very quickly came to learn there was little to see and do. The "bug garden" was completely devoid of life, the "water lab" seemed like a pointless structure aside from coloured perspex sheets making the sunshine appear a lovely colour inside and many of the areas advertised were closed to the public with locked gates, and thus, inaccessible. The only highlight (if you could call it that) was being able to walk amongst the black swans and ducks in the central area of the reservation. Many of the attractions were missing, such as the cranes en route to the gift shop/exit. What should have been a gorgeous scenic walk with lots of animals and birds to see turned into a half hour disappointing amble before unanimously and begrudgingly heading back to the car, having spent approximately £20 entry fee for the privilege. I appreciate we visited in the winter and this would explain the lack of wildlife in there, but this should have been stipulated upon entry and visitors charged accordingly. I'm anything but frugal but in these times of rising costs and appreciation of value for money, I couldn't help but leave with a bitter taste in my mouth.

Hello, We're sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your visit to our centre and reserve. Our team on arrival should have given you a welcome to our centre and outdoor areas so you know what was available for you to see and do, with the option of a map to help guide you. Please let us know if this wasn't the case. We're very saddened to hear your feedback on the lack of wildlife to see, as with over 300 birds around our inner areas as well as over 100 acres of wild reserve to explore, we're sorry to hear you didn't manage to see many. Our family of otters are also visible regularly and we have two daily commentated feeds included as part of the admission cost for visitors to attend. Our family of cranes are on display in front of the centre building at the moment and are usually always visible if you're able to spend a moment or two to enjoy the scene and spot them, along with the barnacle geese and white-fronted geese that live alongside them. As you've mentioned, you visited during winter time (January) during a particularly cold and frozen weather period, bugs and insects will not be out as I'm sure you'll understand these are reliant on warmth and sunlight to emerge. Our waterlab features are also currently switched off for winter as they can freeze, which can cause the mechanisms to break. We're sorry if this caused some inconvenience for you on the day. There are currently no areas of site closed to the public, so we'd be keen to hear what areas you found inaccessible during your visit, and we'd also be keen to hear what attractions you found were missing to see if something has perhaps happened on the day that was out of the norm. We really do strive to offer a wonderful experience for our visitors and as a charity we are massively grateful to you for your visit and feedback. We're sorry our site wasn't for you, but I hope you'll appreciate the conservation work we are doing and that you have, in some way, supported that. Do feel free to get in touch with us directly to discuss anything further - info.washington@wwt.org.uk. Many thanks

The Wetland Centre is well worth a good visit for a lovely circular walk of great interest and beauty, with lots of different birds a major but not the only feature, it was my first time seeing European Cranes not on the tv, also loved watching the asian short clawed otters, and the quietness and stillness of the scene was a very special experience - well worth a visit out of season for this. Still late autumn colour even in early December. Loved watching all the small birds on the bird feeders.
The staff were friendly and very informative and we enjoyed delicious food in the cafe which has a wonderful view over the reserve.
The walk is wheelchair friendly and there are wheelchairs for free hire too.

Great place to get up and close to some of the UK’s and further afield birds! Being a family of bird lovers, it was great to see the care and love that goes into keeping our birds healthy, including the Chilean flamingos and the otters!

Great day out, although on our visit, being a warm day, the feeding areas had birds not too interested in eating… I know the feeling!

A lovely afternoon and not too busy as some places can be, so we were able to enjoy the park in some peace :-)

Hello - thanks so much for taking the time to review and for your lovely comments. We're thrilled to hear you enjoyed your visit and noted the care our team give to our animals - this is much appreciated and the team will be grateful to hear those comments :-) We too know the feeling and our animals (as well as us humans) were all trying to stay shaded during the hot weather spells, rest assured they are getting plenty of food from us! Thanks again for your comments and we look forward to seeing you again soon!

We had a great time here. Came mid afternoon but if we had planned better we would come for longer. Brought one pair of binos which we needed to share! Managed to catch both the talks (otters and flamingos) which were very informative. I would love to visit again with more time!

Very pleasant walk around the grounds despite the ferocious heat. The paths were well maintained and the going fairly easy. However the day was somewhat spoiled by feral schoolkids which were allowed to run amok by their disinterested teachers one of which barged into my wife almost knocking her over.....and I mean a teacher not one of her animalistic charges. Oh and the food was limited to a ham or cheese sandwich which was almost inedible. The ice cream was nice though.

Hi there, Thanks so much for your review and feedback. I'm so pleased to hear you enjoyed your walk and found our site well maintained. We're sorry to hear your experience was impacted by a visiting school and that you experienced some negative behaviour with your wife. Our code of entry is shared with the school and we always request that they are to be supervised by their group leaders while on site - we're sorry to hear this appears not to have happened while the groups have not been with our staff members. We hope this experience doesn't change the way you see ourselves and hope that you'll revisit us again in the future. Should you ever come across anything during your visit please do come and see us on the day so we can manage the situation as it occurs. Many thanks and take care.

We spent a lovely warm spring afternoon exploring the centre!
Everything was very well done and we enjoyed seeing both the captive rare birds and the wild birds on the lakes and in the woods. We especially enjoyed the flamingos and the enormous Lego models would be great for kids to find!
The food & coffee in the restaurant was good and reasonably priced / try the chicken, bacon and leek pasty!

Hello, Thanks for your review - much appreciated. We're glad to hear you managed to see lots of wildlife during your visit. The herons are fantastic to watch in the hedges around Wader Lake - numbers are increasing now too which is great news so hopefully on a return visit you will get to see even more! Many thanks and take care

I am so lucky, to live close to WWT Washington, 15 minutes in the car and I'm in my happy place.

No matter how many times I visit, I see something new, often depending on the time of year/season. I've been really lucky to see the kingfisher, a couple of times.

WWT caters for people of all ages, The site is "disability friendl. It is a photographers paradise! I must have 1000's of photos, taken over the years.

The staff are lovely and really helpful

The food is lovely, in the cafe, though soft drinks are quite expensive, but all proceeds go back to WWT.
