Unfriendly staff but had a nice 45min jaunt round the small castle learning about its past. Great views over the Solent, recommend visiting when the Wightlink ferry comes in from Lymington as pulls up right next to the castle! Yarmouth itself is small so only need 1-2 hrs to explore. Parking was in the square next to the castle and was free for 2hrs.

Fantastic views and a wonderful place for a picnic. We have English Heritage membership so not sure what the ticket price is and if it's good value, but there are fantastic views of the pier from the outside. There are also picnic tables too which you can use if you've bought your own food or got a takeaway from the local bakery.

We visited during a treasure trail around Yarnouth purchased separately. As we were English heritage members, we stopped off at the castle. The castle has several rooms with things to read and for kids to dress up. The views are stunning with lovely views out to mainland and ferries as well as the nearby pier.
I'm unsure of the entry costs for non members but I doubt it'll be worth the cost for family of four as once you've seen the lovely views it won't take long to do th le rest.

A wonderful place to visit. Hidden away but full of history and so much effort has been put in to create an enjoyable experience.
Our children enjoyed the dressing up/games room. There is a decent amount of information to read as well that explains the purpose and history of the castle.
The view is brilliant and markers indicate key points to spot across the Solent. We were interested in learning about the various ship wrecks as well.
We spent about 30 mins here with two primary aged children, definitely worth a visit especially if you’re EH members!

Great experience and fantastic interactive displays. Great views across the harbour. It’s only a small venue but good for a couple of hours or a lunch - particularly if you’re already an English Heritage member.

Worth a trip if you're an English Heritage member and in the vicinity but otherwise I wouldn't say it was worthwhile to travel to or for the entry cost. Yes it's an interesting building and the display boards are well thought out, but it is very small and took us less than half an hour at a dawdle to see everything (that included double checking around every corner as we felt like maybe we were missing something) - I find EH's pricing strategies strange as we spent more time at Appuldurcombe House which is free to everyone.
Facilities are basically a small gift shop (and when I say small I mean really small), no cafe and didn't see any loos. The member of staff was really friendly and when we went they were doing rum/gin tastings.
Dogs welcome which was a big plus for us.

The current structure evolved from a medevail coastal castle into a significantTudor, (and later C18th) defensive gun platform. Built principally to defend the Western aproaches to England's naval strongholds further down the Solent to Southampton and Portsmouth, with a "sister" fort at Hurst Castle close to Lymington.
It is an interesting series of store rooms, barrack rooms, and of course with the imposing gun platform, with its heavy caliber cannons, and uninterupped views across the Solent (if you ignore the expensive yachts). Inside the castle/ fort there is an intriguing exhibition / history of the building, and of the defensive requirements of West Wight.
No dominant towers here but its job was a defensive staement and deterrent. Such was its strength it was never seriously attacted .
Great fun, especially when the ferry arrives next door

We actually walked from Fort Victoria park that has free parking, nice walk took about 20 mins just a bit of it along the roadside. Free entry for us as we are English heritage members a couple of the rooms are dressed with furniture in the style of the time and there were interesting information boards dotted around. Views of the pier from the small grounds outside, no cafe facilities. If you have to pay full entrance fee you may feel it is a little pricey for the size of it. Only takes about an hour and would not be worth travelling a long distance to visit.

Pleasant but not worth making a special journey. Parking is the main problem. We paid for an hour which was enough. We got held up as we tried to go in. The ticket office/ shop is tiny. We are members and just wanted to check in but the assistant had done the usual hard sell on an elderly couple and was then taking all their banking details in full hearing of us.
I do not like English Heritage’s pressure selling.

We took a trip to Yarmouth Castle for our sons birthday as he had learned about it at school. Even though I live on the island I never knew that Yarmouth had a castle. It is only small but there is plenty of history within the castle walls. There is a lovely outside area where you can have a picnic & watch the world (& wightlink ferries) go by. Our son enjoyed his trip, especially playing with the tudor style toys in the hall. It only took about an hour to walk round the castle, but including the picnic we were there for nearly 2 hours, so definitely worth a visit especiallyif the weather is good. There are no toilet facilities within the castle, so worth a toilet stop before going in, especially if you have little ones.

is this suitable in all weathers
Written 4 June 2018
There are a number of rooms at both levels to look at, and shelter in, however the open area at the top would be very exposed if the weather was poor. If you are paying to go in (i.e. not an English Heritage member), it would probably not be worth paying to go in on a day with very poor weather.

Is Yarmouth Castle accessible to someone who has to use a small mobility scooter please?
When is this attraction open as we are coming on holiday on 19 th March 2018
Written 30 December 2017
Hi Sheila its wildsurfer here you might have a little difficulty with a scooter as there is two levels to Yarmouth castle, a ground level and a first level you can definetly gain access very easily on the first level but that would depend on the width of your scooter, also the ground is a little uneven on the first level, there isn't a lift so you will definetly need help to get from ground to first.
Good luck

Hi how long should I allow to get round this attraction please?
Written 31 July 2017
Hi AuraUk it should take at least 10 to 15 mins to tour the castle but if you like reading and increasing your general knowledge , it should take approximately an hour to an hour and a half depending on how interested you are about the castle , lots to read and find out,
good luck
