About
Watkins Glen State Park is a natural wonder located in Upstate New York, about 250 miles from New York City. The highlight here is the 19 waterfalls that cascade down the stream and rock formations—you'll want to take your time exploring them along the hiking trails on offer. The Gorge Trail along Glen Creek is particularly stunning, just be careful of the slippery steps. Consider visiting Watkins Glen State Park on a tour of Niagara Falls from New York City. For fewer crowds, visit on weekdays or early in the day—especially during the peak summer season. – Tripadvisor

- Albert KBoston, Massachusetts34 contributionsBeautiful viewsIf you like national parks or scenic places this is the place for you! Despite the weather not cooperating during our visit (it poured the whole day but wasn't too bad once we were at the park) it was still pretty crowded. It's similar to Flume Gorge in NH, but at the same time unique in its own way. If you want to experience the whole pathway prepare for a good hike that is mixed with climbing up the stairs (Jacob's Ladder is more than 600 steps). You pay for the whole day parking but otherwise it's free (bus shuttles are extra if you don't want to hike).Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 October 2023
- Joan vCincinnati, Ohio48 contributionsBeautiful Gorge HikeWe have been to many parks! The Gorge hike was beautiful! Every turn was a Kodak moment. We had great weather. We visited the park early October on a Thursday and the crowds were small. We took the North rim trail on the way down. Parking 10 dollars additional parking across the street. I would say the trail is moderate take the steps slow and you will be fine, some of the steps are wet so just be aware.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 8 October 2023
- Journey596215108805 contributionsWatkins Glen State ParkBeautiful park to get out and see the many waterfalls. Park includes a lot of stairs and even though the loops are fairly short be prepared for some exercise. Recommend wearing a rain jacket and good shoes as certain parts of the loop you will get a little wet.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 22 October 2023
- RappguyBoston, Virginia76 contributionsWatkins Glen - a very civilized natural gorge, even for us Seniors! On our 8:30 am visit on a weekday in early October, we were thrilled by the never ending succession of the wonders of Mother Nature. Wow! People try to create pretty places, but the natural ones are just astounding. Beforehand I read scary descriptions of the 800 steps, but my wife and I (in our sixties and seventies) had no problems. It is a very civilized gorge, with safety railings throughout, and nicely cut trails complete with trashcans!. We took the precaution of entering the Park from the "southern entrance", thus avoiding the many steps right at the start of the gorge. (from N Franklin St, turn onto Old Corning Rd for 0.4 mile, then right onto route 419 and quickly bear right to stay on route 410 to south entrance)Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 24 October 2023
- Me H3 contributionsGo go go!!!Local, and run the gorge weekly. The gorge is beautiful in every way imaginable! Be prepared to climb lots of steps and get wet(notice the many WATER falls:) It can be very busy during peak hours (11-4) so be patient and enjoy the scenery. Thankfully the gorge trail does not allow pets, so no chance of getting bitten, incessant picture taking, or stepping in…well, you know! Pets are allowed on outer trails. Lots to do in the area…enjoy!!!!Visited August 2023Travelled soloWritten 12 November 2023
- Mariusz SBaulkham Hills, Australia316 contributionsVery nice walkVery nice walk into the Watkins Glen Gorge, very picturesque. Several places to see cascading waterfalls so take your camera. Gets quite busy after 10am and on a nice day it will be full of people so it's hard to get the photos that make impact. Come early or late. The walk is wet. Best to have shoes that can handle it, they might get wet and muddy. In most cases you can avoid too much damage and walk around the muddy parts.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 19 November 2023

We had the wildest winter experience as the snow fell and the winds almost carried us off. It was awesome. The bridges, the overlooks, the gorge and the waterfalls. Nobody was there, and we had an amazing time. We highly recommend Watkins Glen in December.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 December 2023
- Shawn HWashington DC, District of Columbia408 contributionsWinter Walk on the EdgeWe went to Watkins Glen State Park off season - so we didnt' get the full experience. In late November, we arrived - one of only a few cars in the lot. The shop and visitors center were closed, bathrooms were limited to outhouses. During this time of year, the really famous trails inside the gorge are closed, but we were able to walk down and back on both sides of the gorge, with some really nice views from some lookout positions on the waterfalls below. From what we could see, the trails that were locked off must be spectacular. I don't fault the park for closing off unsafe trails in the winter - but it would be nice if they'd find a way to connect the trails open in the winter better so you can do a more convenient loop.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 December 2023
- Monica M36 contributionsA must-see, relatively easy hikeWe entered the main entrance (stayed across the street at Watkins Motel, highly recommend) and did the Gorge Trail. We entered the park at 7:30 and had the place almost to ourselves. We took the trail the full 1.8 miles to Jacob's Ladder (the most stairs we did at one time {180}. If you don't want to go up them, just turn around and head back. If you need to use the facilities and don't want to hike back there is a shuttle that will pick you up here and take you back for $6 cash or credit) We used the facilities and headed back. Don't let the 800+ stairs intimidate you. We are out of shape and I have a health condition and we did just fine! The stairs are spaced out with plenty of space between. The views and waterfalls are breath taking. Worth every step. There are two walk behind waterfalls where you will get some spray, not overly wet. However, the trail behind the falls will have puddles, be prepared for wet feet. Also, some of the trails are very narrow, and you will undoubtedly have to squeeze around other hikers (who have little manners and don't want to move to the side or wait for you to come by.) This is why we went early. Our way up wasn't bad. Our way back it was 9 a.m. and getting very busy. Lastly, I will mention that there are numerous entrances and parking lots. I highly recommend the main entrance to take the Gorge Trail. Entering this way, all the waterfalls and views are in front of you as you hike. Entering at Jacob's Ladder puts all the views behind you as you hike.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 May 2024

It was definitely worth it! The waterfalls were very pretty and it was interesting to learn about the history of the progression of the falls. Make sure to take time to do the Gorge Trail going up and the North Rim Trail coming back to the main entrance Visitor’s Center!Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 8 June 2024

Before visiting I was extremely excited to see this natural wonder with my own eyes. Unfortunately, for me, it did not live up to the expectations.
Upon entering the Glen (from the camping area) there are fences everywhere taking away from the natural beauty. I complete understand there are safety precautions, however, I’ve hiked I much more treacherous terrain where fences were not added. We hiked down into the Glen. There are small areas of beauty, but there’s trash in the Glen (people are disgusting sometimes). We were lucky to visit on a Monday morning so crowds were not an issue. Most people we encountered were courteous and wore masks when within 6 feet of anyone outside their party. The park has currently restricted the Glen trail to one direction.
The best part of this hike was a visitor a long the route playing his flute. His peaceful music echoed through the rocks beautifully. And near the end of the hike there was an adorable chipmunk perched on a rock.
If you want to enjoy this site, I highly recommend visiting on a week day, possible after a good rainfall. However, do not make it your only reason to visit this area.

A friend and I were in the area to visit the Corning Glass Museum (DO NOT MISS IT!) and decided to see what else was around. This hidden little gem of a park totally exceeded my expectations! Luckily we read a little in advance and learned that it gets super crowded during the day so we went at 4:30 and again right when it opened. Definitely the right call! My advice is to take it slowly, be prepared to get a little damp (wear sensible shoes!), and bring a camera and water. Really great way to spend a few hours!

We love to visit the Watkins Glen State Park. The views are incredible.
This visit was nice but not quite as nice as before. Some of trails were dirty and we saw several discarded masks along the way. There was also garbage thrown in some of gorges.
We went on a Monday morning (Sept 21) and we were glad we were early because by the time we left the place was swamped with people. We were also disappointed to see the gift shop was closed. They really lost out on some revenue as a lot of people were wanting to stop in.
The gorges were still beautiful and the upgrades to the entrance area is nicely done.

This is just a fantastic place for a day out. Hiking through the gorge is just an absolute marvel of how beautiful nature can be. Go slow, take your time and come early in the morning or later towards the end of the day to avoid crowds. If you're a photographer, make sure to take your tripod to get those silky smooth long exposures of the waterfalls! Gorge trail is one way, but the North Rim and South Rim trails (did both - one each day) offer beautiful woods scenery. Make sure to check out the pond if you're interested in spotting lots of frogs.

If you've looked at any book or website extolling the virtues of nature in New York State, you've probably seen images of Watkins Glen. Those images that you've seen don't do the place justice. Every inch of the Gorge Trail is absolutely beautiful. I would recommend going in the early morning or later in the evening as the trail does get horribly crowded by 10 am. If you go by 7 am, you basically have the place to yourself. I would also recommend exploring farther up the gorge, still within state park boundaries but away from what most people know as they are also beautiful sections there as well.

The glen has easy parking across the street and a shuttle bus available on weekends off season and during the week in the summer. The bus will take you to the top of the glen so you can walk down. Even without that, you can walk the glen easily, although there are many stairs and it is wet. Of course it's wet: there are 19 waterfalls, and you can even walk behind them! I would wear sturdy shoes. It really isn't necessary, in my view, to wear hiking boots, but your shoes will get wet. This year has been particularly rainy so the falls are very dramatic. The round trip from the visitor center is about an hour and a half, although you can linger wherever you like and take your time if you are not in a hurry. This is a lot of fun for the whole family.

We camped at Watkins Glen State Park. The next morning we started the hike around 7:45 AM from the main entrance. There were a few people on the trail going up, but we pretty much had the trail to ourselves. On the way back down around 9:15 AM more people were starting to hit the trail. Instead of going all the way to the other end of the trail we stopped where the waterfalls ended and turned around to head back. Since dogs are not allowed on the trail or to be unattended at the state park / campsite area, we hired a dog sitter Donna. This was a recommendation from the state park. She was absolutely wonderful. Met us in the morning at our campsite and she just hangs around right there with your pup. It gave us a piece of mind to be able to enjoy the hike and have our pup in good hands/company. Would highly recommend her.

The weather was beautiful today and it seemed like a great time to visit the falls. The gorge is truly spectacular and the succession of waterfalls was lovely even with low water levels. It was not overcrowded, but many people were not wearing masks. The hiking pattern is set up with a one-way direction upward on the gorge trail. Although there were signs stating this, there was no one at the trailhead explaining or enforcing this safety rule. There was a pretty steady number of people coming down the narrow trail the wrong way often without masks. We had stopped at the info booth where the ranger explained this, but few people were stopping in. Also, we did not see any caution about the very long climb required to complete the loop and it definitely took me by surprise. There were people along the way who did not seem fit enough to make it and were struggling to climb. I don't know what the options are for people who want to quit and descend. We did not see any explanation of how to cut over early to the downward trail.

Amazing walk around the gorge! Highly recommend wearing hiking shoes or sneakers with tread. Trail is 1.5 miles one way with many stairs. I recommend taking a different path back down just to avoid people because the walk is beautiful thru the woods. We hiked the trail 2 days in a row because we enjoyed it so much! Paid parking available but we stayed at the hotel in town which was an easy walk to the park.

Are there any railings along the trail but mainly by the steps?

i visited the park on a bus trip years ago. I remember being dropped off and we walked down and the bus picked us up at the bottom. Which entrance should i start from to redo that trip?

Your best bet is to park in one of the main parking lots right on N. Franklin St., the main thorough-fair in Watkins Glen. This is the main entrance and then you walk through the gorge along the gorge Trail, which ultimately does ascend. All 19 waterfalls can be seen in the 1st mile of the hike— it is at this point that there is a path up to the north rim and to the parking lot where it sounds like you first entered the last time you were there. You can take the shuttle bus from this parking lot back down to the main entrance or there is the north rim path you can take all the way back. If you choose to continue the hike all the way until the end, the last bit is a killer, called Jacob ladder— Very steep and lots and lots of steps.

My husband has Parkinson's and can't walk very far. If we drive to the top, can we see ANY of the river or waterfalls?

Hello and and I’m sorry for my delayed response.
If I recall correctly , from the upper parking area , there are still some steep stairs that you need to take to walk down to the first level where you can view the falls. And that’s viewing the falls looking down stream which isn’t as impressive as looking at them up stream.
Again my memory isn’t the best but from the parking area in the center of town , after crossing the street, there is this small plaza where there is an information booth. Again if I recall, there are no steps or a few steps to access this plaza at the start of the trail and from here you can look up at the first series of falls.
My suggestion is you arrive relatively early and get a spot in the lower parking lot in town and before having your husband walk across to the plaza, just run over and check it out to see if there are steps and also to check out the view of the falls. I really don’t think the upper lot is a good option.
I hope that helps.

Only thing I can tell you is, there are steps all along the Gorge. To view some of it one can go south on N Franklin St. Turn right onto Pine St. Travel approximately 0.2 miles then turn left onto Cemetery Rd. Once into the cemetery continue following the zig zagging road up to the big Jesus statue. There are trails to the left that may take you so you can see some of the gorge. That, my friend, is about the only way. It is a hiking and stepping gorge. Hope this helps.

Do you have to pay or reserve to use the showers? We aren’t staying in the camp grounds but would love a shower after hiking in the summer heat all day. How does that work?
