We needed to break up a drive and arranged to stay at Relais de Mirepoix for a night. We had no idea in advance what a charming little town this would be - much more interesting to us than the tourist trap at Carcassonne.. Definitely recommend a stop here.

Place Marechal Leclerc is a good example of the Bastide style of building construction, which was popular in Medieval times. It is half timbered and constructed from wood and cob (a type of mud). Most romantic and well worth a detour.

This is an amazing medieval village right on the middle of town with all of the original type buildings and a square full of shops and restaurants. Highly recommend spending a few hours walking around Mirepoix.

The medieval square is a wonderful sight, the timber collandes provide shade in the heat of the summer and allow you to sit and sip a cafe, pression or verre de vin and watch the world slowly slip by.

The town square is surrounded by beautiful old buildings with timber frames painted in varying pastel colours. You can imagine exactly how it would have looked several hundred years ago. The square has plenty of small shops selling a range of things from toys to clothes. There are also a number of small bars cafes and restaurants to chose from. Market day is on a Monday, we chose to visit coinciding with a public holiday, very busy market but a huge range of stalls selling everything from local produce to white goods! Parking is good next to the cathedral except for market days when the best bet is to park at Super U just on the outskirts of the town and walk in.

You find different squares here in Mirepoix and it is interesting that the town center is accessed by four entreances which make it all very nice and you feel history when walking the arcades.

By happenstance I met the mayor as she was joining for some sort of professional gathering. It was great to see the village leadership, and the renovation of the building is looking great. I think they said it should be done this fall.

We visited the market on Monday. There was a lot of people, but all very friendly. The market itself was very cosy with a lot of artisanal products which smelled and tasted very nice! We were there with little children but this wasn't a difficulty. Not even on the market as there was enough room to pass with our stroller. Certainly can recommend a trip to this village!

We came on the recommendation of the concierge at our hotel in Carcassonne on a rainy day. So glad we came. Wandering around the arcades around the plaza felt like stepping back in time! The timbers holding the buildings up are phenomenal. Sweet little artisan shops. My kids loved all the toy stores, bought some wooden swords and played in plaza for some time. Definitely kid friendly.
