We live near Mirepoix and enjoy visiting, having first stumbled upon this little local market town when travelling between Foix and Carcassonne. Its population may be modest- around 3,000 people - but it packs a huge amount of history into a compact town centre, the main feature of which is the characterful and carefully preserved Place des Couverts with its amazing arcaded half-timbered houses, jettied out above the arcades to provide shelter for the medieval traders and market-goers. These date from the C15th to C17th and are individually interesting (check out the gargoyle-like grotesque carvings on some of theme) and form an architectural unity that's seldom seen elsewhere. There's an interesting small cathedral, too.
The town has everything you need whether staying in the area for a few hours or a few weeks - two supermarkets, garages, a choice of accommodation, and plenty of good restaurant and refreshment opportunities.
If you have the choice, visit on a Monday before 1pm to catch the wonderful weekly market; this is one of the best in this part of the Midi, always well attended and full of interest as well as showcasing the products of the many small agricultural producers of the region.

We stumbled upon Mirepoix after looking for somewhere to stop on the road back from Foix. What we found was unforgettable. We've traveled extensively in France, always visiting medieval towns and villages, yet we have never seen such a complete survival of medieval timbered buildings like this. The town square is stunning, with covered arcades along 3 of its sides. The side streets are only slightly less interesting, and there is also the one surviving town gate and the cathedral to explore. On a sunny summer's evening there simply is nowhere better to stop off for a pastry and a coffee, to sit and soak up the atmosphere.

Bastide is a description of the architectural arrangement of the city structures. The roads are orientated N/S and E/W. The city used to have 4 entry gates corresponding to these directions. Now, only the West gate survives. Around the city, parts of the old walls are still visible, integrated into many of the buildings. As you walk along the many terraces, over which the old buildings with their worm marked oak timbers, seem to be precariously suspended, you cannot miss the aura of the years gone by.

Beautiful historical centre of the town, Bastide signs adorn 3 directions and the Porte D'Aval the final one.
Great spot to spend a couple of hours!

This Bastide is not only the village square, which once served to protect the village businesses, but is an active social spot for dinner or shopping. We watched France win the soccer semi-finals there and it was so cool- singing and celebrating. This is a very special part of the world.

The Bastide de Mirepoix is really beautiful and the buildings are constructed of wood and cob. there was a huge flood in 1289 and it was reconstructed in the same Bastide style ie a main square and original Mediaeval buildings. The houses are half timbered with wooden galleries. The covered market was built in the 1800's after the ancient "couvert des mesures" was destroyed. Lovely village and great for lunch in the main square.

We loved Mirepoix, the Bastide is a magical spot and a good example of medieval life. Would go back any moment.

This beautiful town of timber houses and clay walls was built in the 13th and fortified in the 14th century. It has suffered a flood, a 100 year old war and was ransacked many times. A 'bastide' was created being a central square to promote social and economical life and a pattern of streets in the shape of a chessboard. It has a brilliant market on Monday morning and the town is a delight for a browse, a mecca for photographers and offers a large choice of cafes and terraces to enjoy a drink.

The old medieval town center has three sides of overhanging, mortar and timber homes that create a feel that cannot be duplicated. You walk under history. Beautiful carvings adorn the timbers. A few small signs give the history of the facades.

On a recent trip from the Spanish Pyrenees through France to Beziers, after a night in St Liziers near St Girons, we deliberately decided to stop for breakfast in Mirepoix. We have stayed there 3 times before and we love it. We were not disappointed on our 4th time despite the early July light drizzle and a temperature of only 15C. Even on a cool, drizzly day the centre of Mirepoix is magnificent and magical. On a warm sunny day the lovely arcades would probably have been bustling with people, however we had the lovely arcaded squares almost to ourselves.
Mirepoix is one of these places that we would go back to and go back to. Make sure you visit.
