This ancient church, founded in the 11th century, is beautiful. Much of the original painted wall decoration survives, giving a sense of how colorful it must have been originally.

We found the cathedral to be beautifully tranquil.
The width of the cathedral is quite extraordinary and the architecture interesting as a result.

I like big apses and I cannot lie. And this is one of the largest in France, though the cathedral itself is lovely, but not remarkable. Dominates the town square, which had a lively market the day we visited, having bicycled from Limoux...a great trip of about 35 miles.

I have visited Mirepoix on many occasions but for some reason never gone inside the Cathedral. However today I did . What a beautiful tranquil atmosphere, with Gregorian songs being played inside. The stain glass windows are beautiful. Well worth a visit .

Mirepoix is a charming town with architecture that harks back to medieval times.. amazing woodwork used in buildings. The conservation effort is huge.
Visit and soak in the medieval times!

We had the best experience here! I'm not quite sure what we were doing in Mirepoix - we were en route to amazing Carcassonne - but after an astounding breakfast wandered in here. Beautiful stained glass windows, especially in the early am Fall light, plus an organ playing!

I liked that it was open and people are free to wander around. Beautiful art and furnishings and atmosphere. About mid-December there is usually a combined French/english Christmas service and I thought it was lovely. Free wine and fruit tarts after - outside - lovely people and a must visit. Repairs currently happening on the outside (1-2015), but its the inside that counts.

Lovely old church, typical of the area. They have set up a display that explains the history well. Dates back to the 1200s.

13th Century building with many small chapels inside, A great place to cool off on a really warm day and to sit and rest ones legs. It is not the best Cathedral but then I have seen others that are worse. We were glad to have the opportunity to spend some time in the Cathedral which appears to dominate the Centre of Mirepoix

This has to be the most beautiful Cathedral I've ever seen anywhere. We just happened to stop to have [a wonderful] breakfast here en route to Carcassonne, heard music as we exited the restaurant, and followed our ears to this lovely sanctuary, which had the most gorgeous stained glass windows ever. Too bad that Patty Ducharme was with us.
