Is an African traditional market where you can find anything you want in very good prices. A place where all sellers come to trade their goods. Everywhere you see there are colours and smells. Many fruits and vegetables, meats and fish and many other goods.
It is usually very crowded especially on sundays and a little bit dirty.
Is something that you are not familiar with but worth a lot a vist to see the tradition and the culture.
Spice corners are full of amazing smells and colours

During a tour in Stone town, accompanied by our guide Kassim, we were accompanied to the Darajani market to buy spices to take home.... we deliberately avoided the meat and fish market, recommended only for strong stomachs, instead the The fruit, vegetable and spice area is highly recommended if you want to make good purchases, obviously ask locals to take you there, who will bargain for you, otherwise it's really unnerving! we purchased many spices packaged in different shapes, "Gate of Zanzibar, Masai Houses, Africa", as well as black peppercorns, cloves, cinnamon, and highly scented natural soap bars. The confusion, the strong smells, the scents, the noises are a characteristic of the market, if you want to savor a bit of authentic local life, a tour is essential!

I can call it fruit and vegetable market. Still you can many others like spices, nuts, stalls selling souvenirs and others. Mangoes, bananas and lichen are the main fruit products here. One piece of a good mango is 1099 shillings equal to 0.4 dollars, but this figure may get double or triple when they recognize that you are not local.

Go here if you want to experience a typical food market, walk across the street to the large market area if you want to experience how locals buy clothes, fabrics and small things.
Ask several vendors for price before deciding who to shop with, some charge high tourist prices.
Be prepared for men who will try to guide you to different places.
Available chicken factory, meat, fish and spice market. Along the streets, fruit and vegetables are sold.

We visited this local market without a guide, maybe we should have taken one.
The market is well segmented: meat, fish, spices, fruit...be careful, no "trinkets" to take home.
Don't hesitate to negotiate and go from stall to stall to get the best price, especially when it comes to spices. In this area, you will be very, very busy. It was too much for us, even though we are used to local markets. There, we were the meat that had to be negotiated!
The fish corner is not pleasant in terms of smell but it is really an immersion in local life.

Super typical and with a large influx of tourists but also locals. Please note that you can purchase the products for a fraction of the initial asking price: everything can be 'haggled' and should be. We ended up purchasing spices for less than 30% of the initial asking price... Good display of local culture.

we had to get some new clothes. Since the prices in the shops around our hotel were very high, we decided on the Darajani (across the main street). The design and quality of the shorts on offer is debatable, but as "initial equipment" they are definitely enough. A little tip: for us, just under 25 percent of the price initially offered was OK. If you take your time, you'll definitely be able to get something else.

I’ve been to tons of open markets like this and always enjoyed them. The stench was beyond disgusting and indescribable. The chicken area was probably the worst, but I just could not wait to get out of there. What a shame as I would have loved to shop for apices and other things. It’s a large market for sure, but the lack of sanitation can be smelled.

Normally when I do a walking tour or stone town tour, I must bring my guests to Darajani Bazaar.
Because my guests can see a lot of things which are selling there like Spices/Fresh Fish/Vegetables/Beef and Tropical Fruits.
Darajani Bazaar it's open every day from morning around 8 a.m. up to evening time.
I recommend everyone to visit when you are in Stone Town.

Stone Town local market, where you can find fish, fruit, meat and any type of vegetable or spices.
It's the local market, so it's always full of local people.
The smells and colors are a wonder.
Do not hesitate to spend a good time there between the stalls.
Totally recommended.

Since Zanzibar is mostly Muslim my guess would be that it would be open on Sunday, but that is only a guess!

As it been said. Opens in the early morning and close in the late evening. But if you want to feel the real buzz you should definitely go there ASAP.

Bonjour.
