I really don't understand why they had to build a cathedral. Why is it that the west is still promoting Christianity in Africa ? Next to where a notorious atrocity took place between 1800 & 1907 & now a church.
Our 11 year old daughter was shocked to witness such torcher

Built over the slave market remarkable architecture. Some columns were put in upside down when the architect was away and guides will point them out. Livingston funeral and the Livingstone cross mad from wood of the tree he was buried beneath. Striking to see the preserved portion of the slave market under the church.

I am so glad that we were able to make it to the church...it was a wonderful site to see. The ground keepers do a wonderful job with the upkeep of this church.

We sat outside with our guide while he gave us an overview of the history of the church and the former slave market, then we took a brief tour of the church itself, including a visit to the lower level where the "holding rooms" can be seen. We then spent almost an hour reading through the very interesting Slave Market exhibit - definitely worth a visit. Yes, you could definitely visit without a guide, but ours was able to provide a lot of context specific to Stone Town history that was not included in the exhibit.

This was a church built upon the plaza where slaves were tortured and sold. The island was formerly under the Oman Sultan leadership and they engaged in slave trading. Under British influence this trade was banned and eventually faded out. You can visit the chambers where the slaves were kept and the church in the same yard. The church building was renovated just 3 years ago, so it looked ok.

I hadnt read up before we went (bit of a mistake) - you pay your bucks to visit the slave market and are pounced on by a tour guide (free tour but you can give me a tip) - you are whisked into a church and the guide incoherently bables some mumbo jumbo - ditched the guide (wait you must see the tomb!!) (sorry I know people are desperate to make money but I am tired of pointless tours) and read a sign when exiting the church - turns out the church was built on top of the market so its not there anymore - entrance fee turns out to be for a museum - very good interesting history and 2 dungeons where the slaves where imprisoned before sale - museum is worth the visit but dodge the tour and the staff selling tickets need a bit of a smack for not explaining here is the official museum or you can go with the dodgey guide

There's much more to this site. Apart from the Cathedral, there's a slave monument in the courtyard and very informative slave museum, and beneath are two original slave rooms.
The Cathedral, which is pretty big and very nice, was built by the British just on the spot where the old slave market used to be. Below the altar, there's a circular marble, pointing the place where the tree was, below which the trade was held. It's a very moving place, and I advice to take a guide at the entrance booth who will show you around and tell history for a small tip.

A very, very sad reminder… for us to respect, be generous of thought and action to our fellow human beings.
It costs $5 per person to enter and a well-informed guide gives one a personal tour of the cathedral, it’s gardens and the memorials to the sad history of the slave trade.

What time there is a holy mass?
Thank you all in advance!

good morning the church should open at about 9.30 but I have no idea about what time there is the mess ,remember that it is a sort of museum so you have to pay a little ticket but go inside because it is very interesting
