Interactive experience to understand how the Erie Canal operates
Jul 2021
Great explanation of how the Erie Canal was constructed and operates that was very creative and interactive. Really helped me to understand it, since I really didn't before I went there. More than just wall plaques and artifacts, although they have that too. Also interesting to learn about all the men and children who worked on it without the power equipment we have today. Wish that I could have gone down to the canal to visit more, but there was a torrential downpour and hail storm as we were leaving. Allow about an hour to visit.

Great Local Overview
Jun 2021 • Couples
Very nice stop to get a good understanding of the flight of five canals at Lockport. The folks working there were very knowledgeable about the area both historically and presently. If you want to learn more about the Erie Canal, stop here first when you visit Lockport!

Fantastic. So informative to do before cave tour
Jun 2021 • Couples
We had an extra day in Buffalo and decided to learn more about the five lock of the Erie Canal … such a fascinating day. A gentleman highlighted the history of the canal (which is useful for someone from west coast who never learned this) and very willing to answer questions. Upstairs was a great video explaining the building of this portion with five locks to move sixty feet in elevation in a short area. After the Discovery center we followed his suggestion and went on cave tour and it made the whole day complete. Do the discovery tour first and the cave tour is 10 times better.

Neat Experience Prior to Taking Canal Cruise
Jun 2021
This was an unexpected gem. We were treated as guests and made to feel welcome as soon as we walked in. My seven year old son LOVED this museum. There was a movie that we were able to "walk into" and several hands-on exhibits for kids. Believe it or not, my son said he actually enjoyed this more than actually riding the canal boat through the locks. I highly recommend to anyone with a curious child who likes to know how things work.

Interesting and informative experience to please people of all ages
May 2021
What a wonderful experience through which to learn about the Erie Canal! And this particular spot with the 5 locks is the best!

the museum itself is excellent in preparation fo the visit to the locks.

The locks experience is also fascinating (despite the present Covid restrictions).

I thought I knew something about the Erie Canal, but this experience expanded my knowledge so much!

I highly recommend this place for all people of all ages!

Learn about the locks
Feb 2021 • Couples
This was an awesome stop. We were the only ones in the place and basically had a private tour. We learned about the history of the canal and watched a video. Learning about the history of lockport and the challenge of finishing the canal system is awesome. After you leave the building go see the amazing technology that was used to raise the boats.

My husband and I were cycling along the Erie canal and found that this center was a lovely way to spend an hour. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and the center is really well-designed. Would recommend it!

Learn about the Erie Canal, don’t just drive by it!!
Sep 2020
Returning from a recent trip to Mid-West, and being a history buff, decided to checkout this place to hear more about the Erie Canal.
Fantastic!!
It is a small museum, and centers on the history of how the building of the Erie Canal created the town of Lockport and the building of the five locks there. But don’t think it is just about Lockport. It is about the construction of the canal. We met Rick there who was on duty for the museum who gave us an overview of things then paid a small admission fee and went upstairs to where there is a interactive movie about the building of the canal and other exhibits. For a small museum, it packs a punch.
We spent about an hour there, then walked maybe 100 yards to where a set of locks had been built and had been highlighted at the museum. You get to see the original 5 locks since decommissioned and replaced with 2 new locks.
Would have been great to see a boat go through the locks, but that is just a matter of chance.
If you want to hear about the building of the canal I highly recommend.

Little Center but Very Knowledgeable and Helpful Staff
Aug 2020 • Couples
We weren't so impressed with the center itself, although the staff was very knowledgeable and provided lots of information on their own. We learned mostly the same information on the boat tour up the locks. Definitely take the time to explore the locks and watch the boats go through.
