Historical Society of Cheshire County is very popular in Keene for their works in and around Keene. All round the year their events in Keene covering range of age groups of family audiences with young children to adults is tremendous and response from public is amazing. I had a chance to volunteer for couple of events such as Wyman Tavern, Finnish Bread cookoff and Beer Fest. It is with pleasure attending HSCC and volunteering as well. Few names like Jenna caroll, Andrea cheeney are famous top shots working for HSCC and their work is fabulous. Way to go HSCC and they are pride of Keene.

After my wife and I moved from Northern Virginia to Surry, New Hampshire, in Summer 2017, I finally made it to the Historical Society of Cheshire County. I was very impressed. They currently have an excellent exhibit on a local radiologist who lived in Keene and was the topic a a Hollywood movie. The staff Educational Director was quite helpful in explaining the operations of the museum and their programs: continuing education at Keene State, exhibits, talks, walking tours, bus tours, and newsletters. She also explained how to request historical maps of the area. On Main Street, they operate both from the 1870 Ball Mansion in the Italiniate Style, their headquarters, and the 1762 Wyman Tavern. They will be expanding to another building, the Bruder House, this summer. I immediately bought a book on the local history of Boston and Maine Railroad and signed our family up for an annual membership. This museum is a true gem!

This Historical Society is a surprising resource -- lots of things to see, including art, historic Kingsbury toys (something for kids) and locally produced antique pottery and silver, along with frequent exhibits and a wide range of programs year-round. A great museum shop with lots of materials about regional history as well as arts and crafts and items for children of all ages. They also have the Wyman Tavern nearby, a very historic house preserved as a museum that is also the site of many summer programs. The Tavern is interesting to tour in and of itself, as well, and has a guide/docent in place during the summer. They also have an 18th century summer camp experience for younger kids.

I have visited the Historical Society several times and enjoyed everyone. They support the local schools and everyone I have ever talked to really knows their history. Well run, they offer community programs and outreach and small store that has provided several Christmas and Birthday gifts to family and myself. Always a very pleasant walk into a simpler, more hands on time that helps you understand where and why.
