- Barefoot29Powder Springs, Georgia245 contributionsEven though the river is low, it is still worth the driveWe didn't do the tour but we still enjoyed parking and walking across the Dam. If you have a Handicap tag or license, you can park for free in the parking deck on the left side of the road before the Dam. You can then take an elevator to the walkway which goes across the Dam. I would also suggest that you go to the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge which is before the Hoover Dam coming from LasVegas.Visited December 2022Written 6 January 2023
- Schmikes19London, United Kingdom207 contributionsNeed to see it to believe itThe sheer scale of this place is something else. It's quite the feat of engineering, and finding out the stories about how it was all constructed is so educational. If you don't have time to drive to the grand canyon, take a trip here, and then the scenic route home. Well worth it!Visited November 2022Written 11 January 2023

There is a cafe to get food or an ice cream at Hoover Dam and they offer tours. Just enjoyed the outside structure and bridge.Visited January 2023Written 17 January 2023

So the trip to Hoover Dam was perfectly timed and then so very appreciated! This is an impressive bit of Americana -- I hope people will take the time to visit!Visited February 2023Written 19 February 2023

Imagine 3200 men working 24 hours a day and finishing this project 2 years early. It wasn’t that long of a visit, but we topped it with lunch in Boulder City and it was a great outing and a break from the noise of Las Vegas.Visited March 2023Written 16 March 2023

- Grosvenor LRedditch, United Kingdom26 contributionsAmazingly man made wonderOne of man’s major engineering achievements. Plenty of parking, limited catering, clean toilets. Worth taking the guided tour and learning all about it and the trials and tribulations of the construction. What is worrying is the effect of climate change on the water levelsVisited March 2023Written 7 April 2023
- Mudeford 123112 contributionsWorth a stopStopped here on way to Grand Canyon. Parked and walked across the dam. Has food in cafe which was okay. Walked to visitors centre but you have to pay to go to viewing platform. Drove up the road and viewed dam from bridge. Good to see but glad we did not make a day trip out of Vegas.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 April 2023
- yitz10Fort Lee, New Jersey40 contributionsMiracle of engineeringBreathtaking views of the dam. Interesting tour of the inner workings (it pays to take the full hour tour). They were doing construction and parking was chaotic and far away, with no room to drop off even a handicapped person. Entry to the tour at the visitor center through security was difficult and staff was rude. Reservations have to be done on site at time of entry.Visited May 2023Written 9 May 2023

There is a climb uphill to get to this lookout. 4 flights of stairs or the ramp up. Great views of the dam, was expecting a visitors centre and just assumed we were in the wrong place. Didn’t bother to try and drive around to find it, just left.

I'm so glad we found this place! It's 100% free and has the best views of the dam. It's a short walk to the bridge from the parking area, but the views are totally worth it! Don't miss this!

Definitely worth the trip to the bridge as the dam. Both incredible feats of engineering. Look out for the memorial plaque to the dam mascot dog - cute story of humanity.

The power plant tour is absolutely worth the time and money! This structure is amazing and learning about this engineering feat is so great for kids and adults! We took the tour, looked around both inside and outside, then got the aerial view as we flew home the next day. It was very worthwhile!

A fantastic experience. The tour is well worth the money and the views are incredible. I am guessing it would be really crowded in the holidays but it was ok when we went and free parking was available.

Hoover Dam and Bypass visit is 100% worth the time. It is impressive both in terms of history and cool structures ( with plenty of first, biggest, highest tags) But the most impressive is the view!
To get there, put in Hoover Dam Visitor center in Google Maps. (Otherwise Maps will put you on the bypass bridge, where you can't stop or park). For an easier approach for those who hate heights, drive from the Nevada side. The drive is down a gently sloping mountainside, with protective sidewalls.. You reach the ByPass bridge parking first, where you can park and climb. There are both stairs and ramp walk up with protective railings. The spectacular view covers the entire the dam, with the lake and the river gorge too! Very windy up top, so use hat ties.
You can also drive down further to the Hoover Dam itself, and drive across the dam itself! Though the visitor center has a fee and there are tours for a higher fee that allow you to see the turbines and the history through a movie. Tours are in the afternoon, and requires comfort in walking down steep staircases.
Covered parking is available for $10. Other Parking is along the slopes, so be prepared to walk down to the dam. The dam history, planning and the structures are easy to identify with informative plaques.
For most months the weather is hot...so cover up and use sun screen. The water level in the Dam and the river is really low...so seeing the overflow photos near spillover area makes it an emotional visit.

An incredibly magnificent human achievement. You cannot see much while on the bridge unless you stop and get out of your car.

I read an old blog post that said the bypass bridge is closed for cleaning on Monday mornings. Is this correct? And if so, for how many hours?

Has anyone visited the Hoover Dam since 06/2021 to know what to expect? I visited the official site and see tours are not up and running yet. Planning on a visit late August. Wondering about crowds and such...

We highly recommend the GYPSY Guided tour of the Hoover dam and drive from Las Vegas via Hoover Dam to the Grand Canyon. It entertains you with facts on the dam, where to park, where to view all for a $6 app on your smartphone. The "Gypsy" app tour is like having an expert tour guide that tells you where to turn, what to see and fills you in on history, geology and funny tid bits. It is the right amt of information and silence. definitly check it out when visiting Hoover Dam and get the history.

We are going to Las Vegas for work and have one full day. We want to see Hoover Dam, which I understand is an easy day trip. After the conference, we are driving from Vegas to Flagstaff. I want to make sure we will not be doubling back - i.e. driving past the Hoover Dam on the way to Flagstaff! Does anyone know? Thanks!

We are renting a 25' RV and visiting Lake Mead and the Hoover dam in late September. Where on the Dam Bypass would we be able to park to see the dam? Also, are there any RV parks in the area you'd recommend? And any marina you would recommend for renting a small powerboat. Thanks!

Is the parking area open and are people allowed to walk across the bridge during the pandemic? Will be there in 2 weeks and cannot find a definitive answer.

Best to check directly with them as things could have changed.
How and where did you book the tour for the power plant. I would love to do this, and about how long would you say this could take of your day? Is there some good things to stop and do on the way from Vegas and any good food locations?

We live in Vegas so it is easy for us to take the 45-min drive from our home. After you leave the security checkpoint, watch for a small parking lot on the right with lots of stairs leading up to the bypass bridge. A long walk, but the view of the dam is spectacular. Return to the parking lot and drive down to the dam's on-site parking facility that is favorable if you have difficulty walking. I recommend you bypass the parking facility and drive across to the Arizona side where parking is free but hard to find. Then you take the pedestrian walkway back to the Nevada side and purchase your tickets at the Visitor Center. You can judge the walking distance, in 100-120 degree sunshine, and decide if you should drive back over to the Nevada side and park in the multi-level parking lot for $10. There is plenty to see outside of the Visitor Center. The guides inside the Visitor Center will describe the available tours. Take a wide brim hat, social mask, and plenty of water when you are walking outside. On your return trip, follow the signs from the dam to Boulder City for an ice cream cone and a glimpse of history in a charming small town. On the way back to Las Vegas, you can stop in Henderson for fast food or Walmart shopping.

hello alishjan,
re hover dam... first time out there? it was mine and let me tell ya, there really is not many choices on roads or scenery, lol. once you leave vegas heading toward Hoover Dam, not much except Boulder, which would have places to eat. We didn't stop but the little town did leave an impression as "quaint", think we passed a "train ride" passing thru and 1 grocery store. the scenery is everywhere, the expanse with nothing, the mountain tops looming near and far.... then suddenly you spot a lake (or is that a mirage?) and there it is.... Grand, man made and inspiring, the dam and the surrounding infrastructure show what extreme measures it took to harness nature, for better or worse as you will see by the visual water lines, +100's of feet above the current water level which our driver states is as much or perhaps even more a result of poor water management as any natural event. Be that as it may, seeing that line does give a dramatic perspective, especially in photos.
