About
The Benedictine Abbey was founded in 754 at the foot of the Black Mountain. Throughout its history, the Abbey has undergone numerous changes : a seminary, a Royal Military School under the reign of Louis XVI, and then , under the director ship of Father Lacordaire, a famous and internationally well known school. Military, writers, philosophers and politicians were trained there, until its closure in 1991. Since 1993, the joint trade union has renovated this classified historic building and has been the subject of an ambitious project for the development of tourism and culture. The Sorèze Abbey-School is recognized as a pole of excellence and listed among the major attractions in Midi-Pyrénées.

Dom Robert Museum and Sorèze Abbey
To visit, very interesting. The paintings and tapestries are impressive. Well signposted route.
Great time. I recommend it to you.
It’s a shame that the Creative Workshops surrounding the establishment are closed on a Saturday morning in September. The tourist continues on his way and never comes back. The objects on display, seen behind a closed door, are interesting but too bad with the closed door!

We stumbled on this town via Internet as you these days ! We’re in the area spent a few hours in the lake nearby then stopped for the lovely afternoon escaping from the heat too. It is well restored and presented building with good electronic guide purchased with you entrance fee . A little steep but worth it as children go free I think was 8or 9€ plus 3€ for the device which can be shared by the group. It is truly magnificent building with some uniforms books even chemistry lab stuff too see . Kids will find it interesting too and take around 1.5 hour. We didn’t go the museum due to lack of time as had to be in Toulouse !

This is not easy to find without a map or sat-nav' but its worth the effort
fascinating, tranquil and historical. with wonderful exhibition of the work of Dom Robert, a famous artist /monk. This is not to be missed if you are in the least bit interested in art or colourful - modern looking tapestries, these are stunning.
plan a goof half day there- there is a restaurant close by and a lovey village well worth exporting - many of the buildings have plaques on then.
Also the car park at the Abbey is vast and not far from lots of lovely areas for picnicking

Abbaye de Sorèze is the main abbey located in the little town called Sorèze, in the South of France. It was built in the 9th Century, but it was some times enlarged. In the Middle Ages it was a Benedictine Abbey, and after it was an school. Nowadays, it is the tapestry museum, which you can visit and it is really wonderful. At present you can see the bell tower of the abbey, the main church, some rooms and walking around a little part of the gardens of this building. It is nice. Better, the museum and the main courtyard.

There are two parts to this visit; one is to visit the former school and the second is to see the tapestries of Dom Robert, a monk and artist. The two parts are very different but equally enjoyable for different reasons. It was fascinating to have a glimpse into the lives of the former students. I particularly enjoyed going into the bedrooms and seeing how they had changed over the years; very stark in the beginning but in the sixties Beatles posters were stuck on the walls! Definitely worth a visit/detour.

See the former abbey school whose reputation had spread far beyond the border, now turned museum with lots of exhibits, cells and so on. Then you reach the Dom Robert and Tapestry Museum listed by UNESCO, exhibiting the brightly-coloured work of local Benedictine monk com artist. Amazing.

The abbaye effectively contains two museums in one. Firstly the royal school covering centuries of education, gives a very good insight into the life of students yesteryear, but even better is the museum dedicated to the work of Frère Robert who brought a new sense to wall carpets and art. It is rare to find a museum so well laid out and enjoyable to spend time in. Well worth a visit.

I thoroughly recommend that you visit here whilst walking the streets of this beautiful village. Easy to imagine firstly monks then boys strolling and parading in the enormous central courtyard. Inside you can see how austere it was for the boys at the school. No showers until 1967! Very well done. Maybe a printed plan would help you whilst strolling round.

This beautiful ensemble of buildings, originally the Royal Military SChool, has been through a variety of different uses and is full of historical interest. It also contians the Dom Robert Tapestry Museum, which is a million times more interesting than it sounds - astonishing and beautiful. There is a good restaurant, so it makes a fine whole day activity, especially if you are on holiday in southern Tarn, Carcassonne or nearby, if you get the odd grey or wet day or simply need a rest from the sun!

Visit of the Royal School-Abbay of Sorèze
You will wonder at the prestigious past of the “Abbaye-école”. On the way of St James of Compostela (Path of Arles), this former Abbey became a Royal Military School by the King of France Louis XVI and welcomed illustrious names. The visit of the whole architectural ensemble listed as historical monument is magic: the” Cour des Rouges”, the cloister, the “Salle des Bustes” (exhibited busts), the park… Travel back into the past, you might feel you don’t want to go home!
2015 will celebrate the opening of the huge Museum dedicate to the famous monk tapestry-maker Dom Robert.
