An amazing expanse of Latin American artwork, plus others, spread over 5 houses, each with its own courtyard. Peaceful. A respite from the city. An absolute MUST if you go to Leon. Allow time to get entranced by one or more pieces of surprising art.
These are wonderful collections!!!

Surprisingly good museum with a plethora of art, it primarily features Central American artists. All are nicely placed in galleries facing each other across the street.
My favorite was a collection of 12 well preserved indigenous pottery items. I also found Rembrant, Picasso, Warhol, and Basquiat paintings. This is a museum that needs multiple visits, so there may be more internationally known artists as well.

A plethora of art from around the world, and also Central America. It was divided into rooms and corridors following the original structure of the house. I enjoyed all the Central American pieces , that is what i went to see. This Gallery cannot be missed, and its only $3 entry.

An extensive eclectic mix of art from early European to contemporary International and local artists.
The elegant, cool building with shady courtyard and lush vegetation is a great place to sit and think.
The vivid pop art and the video installation of the revolution cover a vast array of styles and messages.
The room stewards are friendly and helpful.

An absolute delight to visit Léon’s art museum today. I would say that there is something for everyone; from fabulous local artists, to an entire room of Picasso prints and some very weird and wonderful exhibits. This is a must in Léon!

So impressed by this museum! Really wonderful and diverse collection of art from Picasso to Warhol to plenty of Central American and Nicaraguan works of art. Beautiful setting in connecting colonial era houses beautifully modernized. Plus, staff who worked there clearly take pride in the collection and were very friendly and helpful pointing me in the right direction. Definitely recommend!

I was surprised and pleased to find a museum of such high quality in Leon. It compares with museums of its size anywhere in the world. The collection of 20th and 21st century Latin American art is a real revelation! Well worth a visit. You can hire a guide for a modest fee. They are students of tourism at the university.
BUT--on our last visit (July 2013), the museum was being renovated and only a very small part of the collection was on display. So, if you are already in town, it's still worth a visit; but if you are making a special trip to see the museum, check first.

we enjoyed a lot this visit even if the private guide we took was quite sleepy...
the entrance fee is 20 cordoba (1 USD), if u wanna a private guide u pay 30 cordoba each more.
they have a great exposure of portraits from 1400 on.
i had never seen such old works so close and without protection. i wondered why they were so open to people and the guide simply answered that leon is a safe city and they dont worry about it... whatever.
there is some work of picasso, rembrandt, botero and many central american artists...

I appreciated hearing the version of a former and present Sandinist that tried to tell the story from a conventional point of view.
Coming from the country of Karl Marx my view is that this told story seems to be rather incomplete and not very deeply rooted in socio-economic analysis.
Most of the claims of the Sandinists seem to me too populistic and sometimes even xenophob.
To fight a revoution is one thing to rule and modernize a backward country is another thing.
In order to avoid the next wave of revolutions and armed conflicts you must take a look into the future and not backwards and learn from the errors of the past in the Eastern Bloc, Cuba and other failed states.
There is a long way to go for the Sandinistas to understand this. The museum must incorporate the challenges of today in order not to describe only the historically necessary overthrow of a dictatorship.
One last word: it never is bad to show the two sides of a coin...
One more last word: socio-economic analysis must be based on hard facts not on myths: Please give us the socio-economic indicatos before and after the revolution.

I enjoyed most of the works in the collection which is heavy on the modern, 20th century. What is nice is the Central American representation there. But surprisingly lithos from Warhol, some Picassos too. No brochure to help guide you though. No gift shop. No photos allowed. I will have to rely on my already aging memory, sigh. Google had posted the wrong times. Saturday it opens at 11:30 am. There is a building across the street that is under renovation and closed. Google showed that side of the street being the entrance. The entrance is on the east side of the street. So, check the times before you hoof it over there. It’s only a couples blocks due west of the cathedral.

Unfortunately, there is no contact information for this museum, so perhaps I can ask you? I use a walker and it looks like there are steps to get inside.? thanks, tom Okeefe

I think there may be 1 or 2 steps to come into the building..but I don't remember exactly. Otherwise the halls are pretty flat and there shouldn't be any steps inside. Only ground floor. There are guards everywhere (every room) and they will certainly help. The guards are quite polite.
