About
The Martha's Vineyard Museum is privileged to be the steward of three of the Island's lighthouses. The East Chop, Edgartown, and Gay Head lighthouses are not only historic reminders of a bygone age, but are working beacons that still send a light out into the night. Beyond their important functional role, these structures also offer visitors spectacular views of the breathtaking beauty of Vineyard Sound, the simple elegance of Edgartown Harbor & Chappaquiddick, and the majestic cliffs of Aquinnah. Major renovations completed in 2007, including installation of a staircase to the lantern room, allow the interior of the Edgartown Light to be open to visitors. A lighthouse keeper will be available and the doors will be open during designated hours. Parking is available, but limited, on North Water Street. The Vineyard Transit Authority (VTA) busses drop off on Church Street in Edgartown. It is a 5-10 minute walk to the lighthouse from this location.

It was great because it was off season and not crowded. It was also nice because you could walk out right to the lighthouse, too. Unfortunately, the day I had was very foggy and you could hardly see the lighthouse even right up next to it. If you’re on the island, be sure to walk out to the lighthouse and hopefully you’ll have a clearer day than I did.

Scenic, tranquil, picturesque. We visited this location with our pup and watched seagulls dropping shells. No crowds (off-season) and easily accessible down trail in a neighborhood. Free on-street parking was a little hard to find but doable.

Not a real hike, but a wonderful walk at the ocean. Sand paths lead to the beach and lighthouse. Beautiful ocean views and peaceful surroundings. Perfect for photos or plein air painting. Then we had lunch at the Seafood Shanty. Marvelous day!

The Edgartown Harbor Lighthouse at the end of north Water Street defines the entrance to the Harbor. The harbor is large and entered through a modest sized channel on the North side of Edgartown.
This lighthouse is certainly worth a photo stop.

Just a short jaunt down a sandy path, through the dunes, to the water's edge. The approach to Edgartown Lighthouse is filled with wildflowers & beauty, then opens up onto a marina path that leads directly to the lighthouse. It's a short jaunt, but definitely worth it! This path is accessed across from Harbor View Hotel.

My family and I spent the week vacationing on Martha's Vineyard this July 2017. We ate at wonderful restaurants, spent time on the beach and touring the island. Although every moment of our vacation was great, visiting the Edgartown Lighthouse was simply monumental. Take a walk to the top and you will never regret it. If he's available, spend some time chatting with Wayde Johnson because you will leave happier than you came and even more enlightened. Wayde was lovely and full of information.I can't put my finger on exactly what it was, but I know that we left with a different perspective and will never regret the walk to the lighthouse. I highly recommend visiting.

I love lighthouses but even if lighthouses not on your priority list of things to see take a stroll to see this lighthouse. Entrance tucked between homes and going down the steps and crossing the grass and sand all part of the experience. Scenic walk and great picture site. Don't cheap out, pay the five dollars to up to the deck.

We took the earliest ferry from Hyannis to Oak Bluff at Martha’s Vineyard and arrived at about 10.20 am. The journey is smooth and the ride is less than an hour. We walked to the bus stop and took the bus 13 to Edgartown with a day pass at $8.
Edgartown is the loveliest of the three town with all the white clapboard buildings. It is so much fun to look at all the houses and shops along the main street.
It is a lovely walk along N Water street to reach the lighthouse. There is a boardwalk one can take to reach the lighthouse. It is so scenic here. I strongly recommend a visit to the lighthouse while in Edgartown as it is within walking distance passing the library along the way.
Near to the bus stop is a café which sells healthy wraps and the food there is delicious. After that, we took the bus 6 to Aquinnah, followed by Vineyard haven and our final stop is Oak Bluff before taking the 6.30 pm ferry back to Hyannis.

Went twice over memorial day weekend: once in the middle of the day, once at sunset. Gorgeous at sunset. It does cost money (not sure how much) to walk to the top. We did not go to the top, but the walk out to the lighthouse, along N. Water St is beautiful.

This is the second lighthouse that we've toured on the Vineyard. It is tucked away in Edgartown. $5 for adults to go in. We found street parking easily and it was only a short walk in. We wish we had carried in the beach chairs as there was a nice public beach there too.

How far is Martha's vinar. From Yarmouth Massachusetts
Written 25 July 2016
Hello, to get to Martha's Vineyard from Yarmouth you will need to drive from Yarmouth, MA to Woods Hole, MA, which is about an hour, and then get on a Steam Ship Authority boat, which will take you on a 45 minute ferry boat ride to Martha's Vineyard.

Hi. Is the Edgartown Lighthouse reachable by the VTA bus ? If not, how many blocks or minute-walk would that be from the bus stop. We're going there this Labor Day weekend. Thank you so much.

Not a far walk at all. I'm in my 70's and had no problem. Easy walk and lovely homes with great architecture. Enjoy!

Brooke, Do you mean the Harborview Hotel that is located across from the Edgartown LIghthouse? It depends where you take the ferry to—closest would be Oak Bluffs rather than Vineyard Haven. From there you can grab a MV bus that will take you to the Lighthouse and the hotel.

How do i get there using public transportation from the Wesley Hotel in Oak Bluffs?

Take the VTA bus #13 to Edgartown. Walk down Main Street to Water Street and turn left. Walk 5 blocks.

Did they charge you going up or going down?
Written 17 August 2015
One or the other, depending upon whether or not the guide is explaining something to another person as you enter. It's a very small space, not easy to miss someone who hasn't paid. Remember, the $5 fee (free for kids under 12) pays for both staffing and maintenance of the lighthouse -- no small feat, exposed to the wind and salt air.
