About
Buffalo Trace Distillery is one of America’s oldest continually-operating distilleries with over 200 years of history. It has been known by several names over the years, but one thing has remained the same—their fine bourbon whiskey.
Uncover the distillery's history, learn about the science of making bourbon, and get a behind-the-scenes look into the production on a complimentary distillery tour and tasting—but make your reservations early as slots fill up fast. It ends with a tasting of some of their award-winning spirits, including their signature Buffalo Trace Bourbon, and Eagle Rare Bourbon. You can explore Buffalo Trace Distillery and other historic spots on a bourbon tour of Kentucky. – Tripadvisor

- Lili PKennebunkport, Maine336 contributionsA distillery trail must! The only distillery that offers a complementary tour. You must book weeks ahead to get a spot. The tours are very well organized. They give you the history of the distillery and the land that it sits on. Learn about the barrel aging process. You also are able to see the bottling, sealing, and boxing processes. We were fortunate to peak behind the curtain for Barton's bourbon. Each tour ends with a tasting of their spirits. The gift store does have bottles of their bourbons available for purchase. For better selection, the earlier tours are your best bet.Visited September 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 January 2023
- not@workLawrenceville, Illinois450 contributionsRae - best tour guide everThis tour was amazing and a lot of that had to do with our tour guide Rae. To be fair I did see other great tour guides taking out groups so I don’t think you can go wrong. This was our 3rd tour of the day and by far my favorite. A lot of explanation on the difference in bourbons, the history of Buffalo Trace and more. A lot of this tour is outside although they do have different tours so I can’t honestly tell you which one we were on as it was booked through a tour company. This is a large distillery. Very Interesting!Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 January 2023
- Travelbugsforlife1,118 contributionsBest tour on our Bourbon Trail Trip - Thanks FreddieBest tour we did on our Bourbon trail trip. We were lucky enough to make a reservation for the day we would be in town. Tip, be ready to try to get reservations online in advance. when the web opens up tickets for a specific day they go fast. Within 10 minutes all the tickets on the day we went were gone. It is a free tour but it is the best one we did. We lucked out and ended up getting Freddie Johnson for our tour guide, he is third generation worker and he had amazing stories of being on property as a child. The property is beautiful, the tour was interesting and entertaining, the tastings were all delicious. Highly recommend this tour.Visited November 2022Written 24 January 2023

While in Frankfort my family and I stopped In Buffalo trace toured some of the grounds which were beautiful and toured the large gift shop and large area w history and tasting rooms. - Terry W3 contributionsThe absolute best distillery in KentuckyIf you haven’t been to Buffalo Trace Distillery, this is a must do!!! They bottle some of the most sought after bourbons in the US!!! Pappy Van Winkle, Elijah Craig 18 yr, Blanton’s, William Larue Weller 12 yr, and about a dozen or so others too numerous to list. They also have other spirits at the store as well as bar ware and other items!!!! A must see stop if your in KentuckyVisited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 February 2023

- ShrubboLas Vegas, Nevada270 contributionsExcellent TourI was disappointed to see all the tours fully booked over a month in advance for the one day I'd be there, but I put myself on the wait list. Luckily I got slotted into the Trace Tour about 3 days before my visit. Unlike many other distilleries nearby this is a truly massive operation, which gives you a different picture of how the process can look. The tour didn't include any of the bourbon making process, no bubbling yeast, no giant stills, etc. Instead it covered more about the aging, collecting, and bottling, which made for an interesting tour. There are plenty of options nearby that show the rest of the process. The tasting was great too as you get to sample some fairly hard to find bourbons (the Weller and Taylor). Plus they were very kind and had set aside some of the limited bottles they had that day for us to purchase. Since my time slot was later I missed the good stuff that morning and greatly appreciate the chance to buy it later. The gift shop also had a huge selection of interesting stuff as well. Plus the tour was free! Highly recommend scheduling a tour (and get there early if you want something rare).Visited February 2023Written 24 February 2023
- bakerm2290Raleigh, North Carolina314 contributionsFound treasure...Historic facility! We were not able to do a tour (book far in advance), however we did get a couple of GREAT bottles! The staff was very friendly and efficient. The shop was well organized. We were able to do the free tasting and we enjoyed how they let us pick our selections. We'll revisit when we have a tour scheduled.Visited February 2023Written 28 February 2023
- KYKIMBERLY52 contributionsAwesome Tour and TastingWow, what an amazing tour and tasting! We stopped in hoping to be luck enough to get to experience a tour, which we were. We did the Hard Hat Tour, no hat required, which was a comprehensive behind the scenes look at the whole brewing process. Wrapped up with a full tasting experience at the end. I have a new appreciate for the process and a new taste for the product!Visited March 2023Written 11 March 2023
- Amber SRoswell, Georgia264 contributionsLoved our tour and visit!Loved everything about our visit! We showed up even though no tours were available online, and we were lucky enough to get on one anyways. Everyone was so friendly and informative. The grounds are very cool. Todd was our tour guide and he was the best guide we’ve ever had at a distillery! Super knowledgeable and funny. Only downside was everything was already sold out when we got there, but the tour and tasting were both FREE, but make sure to tip your tour guide. Definitely recommend visiting!Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 March 2023

We arrived without a tour reservation expecting to only visit the gift shop, but were pleasantly surprised to snag a spot on the tour. It was informative and fun, our guide was the best! It ends with a tasting of 5 products. We ended up spending way too much- buying some of everything plus a cap and a bourbon glass. A great afternoon!

This is my second visit at Buffalo Trace but first tour and our tour guide Kyle was a total gem. He was polite, knowledgeable, and so entertaining. He had a great personality and kept the tour interesting. The campus is beautiful and the gift shop is full of great finds. If you are planning to tour the distillery ask for Kyle!

Our first tour of the trip and a great way to begin a bourbon tour. Friendly welcome center ( appreciated the use of wristbands… no need to pull out you id for later purchases or tastings). Lovely campus and informative tour.
As a non-drinker on a bourbon tour, I really appreciated the glass of root beer being included in the tasting (yep, the root beer was very good and I picked some up in the gift shop).

Buffalo Trace: Excellent distillery tour!!! The grounds are extensive, so there is quite a bit of walking. Our guide, Tyree, was excellent!!!! He kept the group together as we walked the grounds, shared his extensive knowledge on distilling and history as he took us through the tour. The buildings for each step in the process are large so you can easily understand the process! This is an excellent tour with beautiful grounds when choosing a distillery tour.

I have had two tours at Buffalo Trace. One in May (don't remember the guide's name) and one a few days ago in November with tour guide Jeremy. Didn't pay for either tour. They were vastly different. I saw different things on each and the guides couldn't be more different. Jeremy was fabulous! He was knowledgeable and engaging. He showed us very interesting parts of the distillery. In May, our guide was knowledgeable, but was off-putting because he came across as a know-it-all and even disparaged other distilleries. He didn't show us much of interest either, except for the awesome trompe l'oeil mural. Both tours ended with a tasting, which is fun. Bottom line, it seems like you can expect different tour experiences almost every time you go, depending on which guide you get. Also, we had checked tour availability on their website ahead of time and it looked like they were all booked, but when we arrived, they said they had tours available. This happened on multiple days. If you're planning to buy bourbon, make sure to check out their product availability page for their daily offerings and get there early if you want to snag one of their rotating bottles.

It’s jam packed right from first thing in the morning. You can wait 2 hours to get in. It’s a giant place but the tour is very restricted & you don’t see the process of actually making Bourbon. Not a still or mash room in sight. The very worst part is the shop. The check out line is at least 40 minutes. Unbelievable. Also they DO NOT SHIP ! Apparently Sate law in Kentucky prohibits shipping bourbon. Are you kidding! The home of the stuff & you can’t ship it. Tried stores in Louisville same thing. I’m Scottish we have hundreds of distilleries. Can you imagine the home of Scotch not shipping. It’s absurd. Or being in France & the don’t ship cognac or champagne! It totally absurd. Bottom line is it’s not worth visiting but somehow they queue for hours to see nothing but walk out with armfuls of bourbon.

Really enjoyed visiting Buffalo Trace. The only downside is that the facilities are so vast that the tours only cover a relatively small percentage of the bourbon process. Great conversation about what they do and how they do it but unlike most distilleries, you don't get to see it all. Gift shop was excellent, but we had over 100 people in line ahead of us so had to wait over 20 minutes to get in.

Started planning early for a visit next spring. Blanton's is my absolute favorite bourbon. Is there a certain day of the week it drops so we can plan to come take tour and buy a bottle? Since tours seem to fill up well in advance it would be nice to know what day to try to make a reservation for.

The reservation timeframe recently changed. At this time, I think you have to be 90 days out. It's a "luck of the draw" what the allocated bottle will be. It's announced when you are waiting in line for the place to open, approx 8:15am that day. Did the Hard Hat Tour and Taylor Tour in April. Both excellent and well work the effort and great that they are free! Staff are all great and the old buildings are interesting. Agree about the Blanton's! Good luck....

How far in advance to tours and tastings open up? We are wanting to book on Saturday, September 3rd and it doesn’t appear to be open yet.

We used a guide to handle our tours. Frankly, we were glad we did. Our guide used our vehicle and did the driving. We enjoyed the ride. he provided outstanding history and local color throughout. We were free to taste bourbons everywhere we went. He handled the timing, planning (with our input), etc.
We were happy to have hired Bob White with Kentucky Guides who has a Facebook page, Kentucky Bourn=bon Distillery Tours. Btw, I highly recommend Bob White, as well.

This question is not something I can answer. Maybe an email to Buffalo Trace.
When will your product be available again in Wisconsin. I have driven over 600 miles to get one of your product before, but your bourbon is extremely hard to find

Your tours are booked for awhile and we can’t get in when we visit on October 16th. Is there a bar where we could taste your products safely outside?
Thanks!

Thanks for reaching out. We do not have a bar or dining option on site at this time. We recommend signing up for the waitlist for the date you were looking to visit. If we receive a cancellation on a tour/tasting experience or a tasting only experience, we work from that list to fill the spots.

Any chance you’ll take up this local distillery-made hand sanitiser challenge? I can’t post web links, but distilleries from oregon to nc to ga and in the uk are all making hand sani for their communities

Thanks for reaching out. We have checked with the Distillery Team and we actually use all of our alcohol that is produced from distillation either with product or to supplement our fuel stream for our boilers.

Heather,.....Buffalo Trace is very unique and I wanted to ask you if many of their bourbons were available to buy when you were there. Do you highly recommend that tour?

The only bottle available for purchase while we were there was Blanton's. The tasting was a vodka, Buffalo trace, Eagle Rare and Bourbon Creme. We did the basic tour because the hard hat tour was full. You don't get a chance to see the distilling process but you get to see the storage warehouses and the bottling process. When we went to Barton 1792 later in our trip we were able to see the distillers. I would highly recommend this tour.

I don't think you could go wrong on any of the tours. Woodford does a very nice job as well as Buffalo Trace and Evan Williams.
What brands does you make?

They make Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare and you can taste them. They are also involved with Blanton’s and Pappi, but you can not taste them. They are involved with a bunch more including vodka.
