This past Wednesday the wifey and I decided to see the countryside as winter is losing it's grip. We stopped at the Whistling Donkey for lunch and were not disappointed. Great service and way above the normal bar fare! Fantastic stop if you are a bike rider as this is on the paved bike trail just west of the high bridge by Madrid. If you drove to the Whistling Donkey, I would recommend you head north out of town on Highway 210 and stay on it to Madrid, Iowa. This takes you down into and across the valley so you can see the height of the HIGH BRIDGE. This bridge was built by the Milwaukee Railroad and is awesome!

I stopped by on a Saturday night about 7:00 pm. It was about 3/4 full, not bad. I sat outside, and watched the one bartender work with occasional visits from five others workers (servers? not working that night?). The bartender came by after 15 min. and apologized, explaining the kitchen was behind and there would be a 1.5 hour wait before any food we ordered would arrive. People at nearby tables confirmed that they were waiting for orders placed an hour earlier. So, I had a beer (from the tap, in case their would be a delay in getting a bottle/can), paid and left. I wish I could say this was an isolated instance, but the last two times I visited the same very slow service was evident.

FYI, there's a restaurant about a block away (Cayenne) with a bike rack out front with good food, beer and quick service!

Thy pour there drinks watered and weak. More ice in the glass then anything else. Haven't tried the food but, everything appears to be deep fried. It also appears, thy look for kitchen help quite frequently.

There is a varied menu and the food is usually very good. This time we were there on Taco Tuesday and portions were generous and reasonably priced. Service was very good. We will return.

This is a great bar on the trail-- & for the small town. If it is busy order from the outside grill. It has friendly staff & a good variety in both food & drink, Has a lot of entertainment during the summer.

The Donkey has great food and it's a really cool bar/grill off the High Trestle Trail. Perfect for the entire family, solo or with friends. Their downfall is their service. Most recently it took 5 minutes for my server to acknowledge I was there and then another 30 minutes + after my food order was placed to receive my food (during a non peek time). Again, it's a really cool place with great food/drinks but service still needs to get better. Oh..and the 4% service charge for using debit/credit cards is ridiculous.

We went to the Whistlin' Donkey, thinking we would be having the prime rib they advertised on their web site....nope (this is the 2nd time in a month this has happened, the other time was with What's Smokin' in Luther) so what they did have was a steak sandwich for $8.99 + $1.99 if you wanted fries or Onion Rings with that and another $2.99 for a salad. The onion rings were very good. The steak was stringy and I don't believe for a moment the New York Strip they advertised. The ranch dressing was to die for, the best I've had. But when the bill came they charged another $1.87 for using our credit card. Blah. I know we always pay for it in the price of the food, but I just hate seeing it out front like that.

One cool thing was the "grilled" peanut butter and jelly sandwich, might just have to go back sometime by myself and try that, never saw that on a menu before.

We enjoyed our visit. The food was good. The crowd was rowdy and loud. It was very crowded.. so this may show the locals like it that way. It was difficult to visit with our friends since it was so loud. Still a fun setting near the bike path.

The Whistlin' Donkey is just 1/2 block north of the High Trestle Trail trailhead, and next to the park campgrounds. So, on this weekend, and probably many a weekend, the place is pretty lively with the locals as well as out-of-towners. We stopped in on Saturday evening after an afternoon ride on the trail to Ankeny and back. They have a very good variety of food from sandwiches to specials that include pasta dishes. I had the philly steak and cheese sandwich with the fried cheddar cheese balls and they were great! The food came out hot and fast, and the beer is cold. Great place to relax with friends in a small town setting.

We loved the atmosphere upon arrival. It would have been even better had we been greeted when we walked in the door. It's a Sunday night, not overly busy, so maybe it just isn't their thing. We were promptly served and drinks were ordered.
When food was served, the fries were cold, hamburger was overcooked and the lettuce was wilted. We did not get any drink refills served to us even though two of us had empty glasses.
After our meal, we waited and waited for the bill. We ended up leaving our table and finally being asked by the bar tender what she could do for us... all I wanted to do was pay the bill. Sadly, our waitress was only at our table twice during the meal. As we walked out, we saw her sitting outside the back door, apparently on break. I understand that we are all entitled to breaks, but I feel like we should have been notified or at the very least, been served by someone else.
We drove 45 minutes to eat here. I can definitely say that next time we're looking for a road trip to dinner, it won't be here.
