We visited as a family with 2 kids ages 5&9. They were given art “bingo” sheets to help get them engaged with the art and several works included nearby “kids”plaques with thought provoking questions to help introduce child to the gallery experience or to help them think more deeply about the art. It’s not a large museum but the collection is impressive and includes some very famous artists. They also bring in temp exhibits. It’s actually the perfect size for family visits, as the kids have fun but are not there long enough to get bored. FREE admission. Definitely worth a visit!!

Decided to visit this museum as a cold, grey winter day escape. The building is a striking architectural structure, set in a stately neighborhood on the west side of Des Moines. The free admission was a source of attraction for the visit, as was the 4.5-star TripAdvisor rating. As someone who really enjoyed art history in college and appreciates the discipline, I was sorely disappointed. The front desk attendant and gift shop associate were very personable. The size of the permanent collection was, frankly, unimpressive. The galleries hosting the temporary exhibit featured a bizarre collection of what appeared to be pastel cellphone sculptures from the ceiling, with gold-tinted foil scattered on the floor. The representational art collection was small in its holdings. Moved through the entire museum in only a half hour. I am open to cultivating an appreciation of modern and contemporary art, but this did not strike me as particularly modern in character, and was devoid of artistic merit. Cannot anticipate revisiting, and fell well short of experiences at Omaha's Joslyn Art Museum (likewise offering free admission), and Kansas City's Nelson-Atkins (both about a two-hour drive). Surprising that a more robust art museum does not exist in the state's capital.

I was not expecting a museum like this!!!! What a jewel. We ate at the restaurant and it was delicious. I have no idea what museum the guy that complained about the gender neutral was in. I never saw any and even if I did I thought we have all grown past that kind of judgement.

Was waiting for a few phonecalls in the area . Caught the perfectionism and landscape of the outside. As I walked the property was amazed that the perimeter was spot on. Having a problem being a compulsive perfectionist found tube property a great invitation of motivation to come visit.

Our guide helped me understand modern art in a way I could finally appreciate it, so grateful. I loved the variety of art shown from sculptures to Japanese Prints to Impressionist paintings. This art centre is free and so welcoming. We also enjoyed the rose garden, a perfect mid day excursion.
