My first experience at Union Station was good, in the afternoon. My next one, late at night, was horrible. The Red Caps, apparently, had no one supervising them and they weren't helping people. My one bag had fallen off the carousel and, had it not been for one good employee taking the trouble to go look, it would have been left behind. Amtrak employees and Union Station employees gave conflicting instructions. That was one bad experience.

From outside Chicago Union station is a massive beaux arts concrete edifice.
I must admit I had no intention to visit it as I heard nothing wow about it, but a heavy rain forced us to seek shelter there.
The grand hall looked nice, reminding much on Grand Central in NYC, but much less crowded and not that detailed and far more ordinary.
Food court was disappointing with very few low key fast food eateries.

They finally got it right, you no longer are herded into the big room. When you arrive by taxi or ride share (which is across the street from the entrance on Canal street.) pick/up and drop off. You will take the escalator down to all trains. Look for your train on the monitor and find your gate. They also have food and a store. They will call out when you’re ready to board. Very easy even for first timers.

The main gallery is big and beautiful. The station itself is well laid out with good signage to put you in the right direction. The Amtrak staff was very helpful and answered all questions. Paying for the access to the lounge room was worth it. A place to safely keep your luggage until needed. The seating area is warm and inviting. Beverages and snacks are available at any time. Access to the streets of Chicago is clearly marked and easy to follow.

We had purchased tickets weeks in advance, paid for a hotel room and made holiday plans for our 5 year old to ride the Polar Express. With 90 minutes notice until the train departed, we were informed by text that our tickets would be cancelled and we would be refunded. No later train option, no accommodation, only that we would have a chance to ride AFTER Christmas. Devastated our child, who was already dressed in his Polar Express pajamas and ready to go. So callous and unapologetic in completely ruining part of our Christmas experience. Would never recommend, terrible.

Came through here on Amtrak and loved it. Such a grand, impressive building. Airy and clean and well laid-out. The signage was good, it was easy to find what I needed.
The Amtrak lounge was comfortable too, and the bathrooms were clean and well-maintained.

Classic looks, atmosphere to go with it, glad we took a quick stroll through the waiting room. Benches and towering dome ceiling

Large train station can be a bit confusing where to catch your train. Found the board that said which track then super easy to just wait until it’s time to board.

Trains board quickly. I would recommend arriving 30 minutes early to Union Station at a minimum. We got there at the 30 minute mark and over 200 people were in line for our train. Loading happens quickly and you should try to have luggage you can manage well and move quickly with. The station is huge and has many gorgeous areas.

The woman working the metropolitan lounge is the worst human being I have ever encountered! I left for my vacation in tears! We didn’t understand the process since we had never traveled like this before. We paid extra to upgrade to a sleeper and got treated so badly. She was yelling at everyone who approached her. She was supposed to be greeting everyone and she was a monster! I have emailed and called Amtrak and gotten no response so far. I’m so sad that I spent so much money on this vacation and it started off with me leaving the station in tears. She should either be re-trained or fired. I don’t care if she has worked there for 30 years as she claimed. She literally looked at us and said go sit down and listen for announcements in terrible tone. There was no hello, how are you, nothing. And then yelled when we asked to check our luggage, said we were too late. We weren’t. She has a monster!

Is the Metropolitan Lounge in full operation, that is, as it was before Covid reductions? Amentities?

Hi. I am traveling from Chicago to NY on the Lake Shore LTD and I've never used Amtrak before (i'm coming from New Zealand). Can someone please tell me the process to board the train? Once I get to the station, where do I go? I've been told that I don't need to check in as such but I have luggage so do I just head to where the train is and find a person or is there a counter I need to go to?
I'd really appreciate your help :)

If you have a roomette or sleeper car,you can hang out in the Metrpolitan Lounge while you wait. The staff there are super helpful and can show you where to take luggage. They have free snacks, TV's, and comfy chairs.

We did walk it once because we were dropped off at the wrong station. Dirty, dark & creepy.

Hi, just want to check if the luggage storage is still available currently. I had the tickets and about to hang out for 6hours before ridding up to the train. My luggage like a giant, it's 30inches.

If you have a business class ticket you can store your luggage for free in the Metropolitan Lounge - if not go near the Greyhound bus desk and across from there they have the baggage check
I am bringing 2 elderly people (89 and 84) in late August for a trip to Seattle. Tickets are bought, but I’m wondering if there are any ambulatory services available to take them to their train?

Yes, red caps service and handicapped transportation (wheel chairs or Tram carts) are available in the station. You may have to clomb narrow stairs to board the train.

Our train arrives at 9am and can’t check into the hotel until afternoon. Does the train station provide any baggage storage lockers so that we could visit Willis tower without toting our bags?

The Station does have lockers that you can rent, or if you are eligible for Amtrak's Metropolitan Lounge they have an open storage area inside the lounge area. I concur with the previous answer. Check with your hotel to see if they will hold your luggage until check-in. I was faced with about the same situation and my Hotel was more than accommodating in holding my luggage for me and had their house keeping staff tend to my room first. They even texted me when the room was ready and allowed me to check in at noon with no additional charge.
