About
Welcome to the University of Chicago! Founded in 1890 through a gift from John D. Rockefeller, the University of Chicago is an intellectual destination and one of the world's premier academic institutions for inquiry, education, and discovery. UChicago draws inspired students and scholars to our Hyde Park and international campuses, placing us at the nexus of ideas that challenge and change the world. Beyond scholarly endeavors, visitors can tour architecture from neo-Gothic to contemporary, meander through lush botanic gardens, experience a broad array of visual performing arts, bike along the historic Midway Plaisance, and discover many other cultural treasures both on campus and off. Hyde Park Community The main University campus is situated just seven miles south of downtown Chicago in the vibrant Hyde Park neighborhood-a tight-knit, diverse community bursting with coffee shops, restaurants, and bookstores. The newly revitalized 53rd Street corridor has become an epicenter for dining, shopping, and entertainment. Hyde Park is also the heart of Museum Campus South, a consortium of museums and cultural institutions on Chicago's Culture Coast including the DuSable Museum of African American History, Museum of Science and Industry, Frank Lloyd Wright's Frederick C. Robie House, the Renaissance Society, and the UChicago's own Smart Museum of Art, Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, and the Oriental Institute Museum. UChicago's Global Impact The University is shaped and inspired by the city of Chicago. Through growing partnerships with neighbors, UChicago is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and economic development of the South Side-and to the global reach of its vibrant city. In all we do, we are driven to dig deeper, push further, and ask bigger questions-and to contribute and expand our knowledge to enrich human life.

If you want to get a feel for quintessential South Side Chicago, you have to make a stop in Hyde Park, one of the city’s most popular neighborhoods. This historic area is home to two of the city’s most prominent cultural institutions, the Museum of Science and Industry and the University of Chicago. A stroll here will bring you past vintage and grand hotels converted into luxury apartment buildings; peaceful gardens, parks and green spaces; and ivy-adorned museums and other cultural institutions that speak to the city’s diversity and architectural beauty.

Visited here with friends and attended a scheduled College tour and admissions talk. Our student guide was extremely receptive and friendly, giving us a nice tour of all of the University's facilities including the athletics center, the art museum, multiple libraries, the bookstore, the hospital/med area, and more. She gave us a lot of fun facts about the university too!

The university itself featured a lot of old buildings from the 19th/early 20th century but there were also numerous new buildings with far more modern designs which include an egg-shaped domed library.

We also grabbed lunch at the Quantum Cafe, which served a nice range of food ranging from pre-packed sandwiches and salad, to hot coffee, donuts, and burgers, and was thematically quite cool being located on the ground floor of the Quantum Physics building (i think) and open to the public.

Fun Fact: UChicago has over 20 coffee shops!

Walking around University of Chicago and the Harper Memorial Library, you’re waiting for Milton Friedman to come outside to give an economics lecture. It was at the library where the ‘Free to Choose’ debates took place over 40 years ago that brought me here, but I can say that there is a lot more to offer with fine restaurants and coffee shops all over. And of course education if you’re into that sorta thing.

I once read a statement by the university's president wherein he declared that this university was not a "safe space" and his explanation for that statement. I was impressed; intellectual rigor and critical analysis is fostered via courtesy, not a suit of armor. So I made a special trip the last time I was in town, just to buy a t-shirt. I ended up spending an entire day on the campus, visiting museums, studying the architecture, and enjoying the grounds. It was a detour worth taking.

It's hard to believe the size of this campus. It's so impressive. The schools are exemplary for the architecture of the city itself. The greenery around the school is a complement to the total environment.

This gorgeous campus is well worth a visit just for the sake of the university, which is one of the best in the world, although the campus itself is also strikingly beautiful. It's very close to the Museum of Science and Industry, so you can walk over from the museum. In warm weather, the vines and flowers are all in bloom, which add to the grandeur of the campus, but even in cold weather, the Gothic architecture is breathtakingly wonderful. It's a free way to spend an afternoon, and there are coffeeshops around campus to invigorate you.

A highly recognized university, this campus is worth a visit for the great Gothic architecture and jeweled leafy colors in fall. It's one of the best free things to do in Chicago. The campus is accessible via public transportation by taking the Green line to to the 55th St/Garfield stop. I recommend a walk through the neighborhood of Hyde Park too.

The diverse architecture with the traditional Gothic buildings and the modern additions of late make for an interesting comparison as you stroll the campus.

Only two minutes from the museum of science and industry is the renowned University of Chicago campus. Exploring the museums on campus, the Robie House by Frank Lloyd Wright, Site P-1 where the first atomic reactor was secretly built and miles of
paths, trails and parkways through beautiful architecture...Makes for a great half day.
On the way back, the Lakeshore drive view is awesome!
