Grant Park is a large urban park in Chicago's Loop that is usually the first attraction visitors to the city are acquainted with, even Queen Elizabeth II. The 319-acre site is bounded by Randolph Street on the north, the Museum campus at Roosevelt Road and McFetridge Drive on the south, Lake Michigan on the east and Michigan Avenue on the west. Popularly referred to as "Chicago's front yard," the park contains performance venues, museums, gardens, art work and sporting and harbor facilities. It also hosts public gatherings, music festivals and other large events such as Barack Obama's Election Day victory speech in 2008 and championship celebrations by the Chicago Bulls, Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Cubs. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, the park is home to Millennium Park, the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Cloud Gate (aka The Bean), Crown Fountain, Lurie Garden, BP Pedestrian Bridge, Maggie Daley Park, Art Institute of Chicago, Buckingham Fountain, Congress Plaza, Petrillo Music Shell, Court of the Presidents, Hutchinson Field, Chicago Lakefront Trail, Monroe Harbor, Grant Park Skate Plaza, Chicago Children's Museum, Grant Bark Park, Field Museum of Natural History, Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium. In addition, the park offers four miles of walking paths, 16 softball/baseball fields and 12 tennis courts. Artwork? Among the famous sculptures on display are the Abraham Lincoln Monument, Columbus Monument, Agora, and the General John Logan Memorial.

Grant Park is the last one in a series of parks starting from the Millennium park, over the Maggie Daley park further down.
The Grant park starts just after the Buckingham fountain and stretches south to the Field museum. Nice landscaped park with terrific city views.

This was our first time visiting Grant Park and we were impressed. The landscaping is beautiful, the grounds are very well designed and maintained. The setting next to the lake and near downtown is very accessible. It's a great greenspace in the city.

This is a huge open space on the North Side of town, a big city park where there are a lot of special events, plus just plain sports and good times. Well used by the locals.

About 15 minute walk from Millennium Park, this is another urban oasis. We came here to see the Buckingham Fountain, the fountain that is featured in the opening sequence of the sitcom, Married with Children, a classic.
This park is also right by Lake Michigan.

Surprisingly few people at this park, given the crowds at millennium Park just next-door. Well-maintained grounds, a few places to grab a bite, and a fabulous fountain, which is a must see in my opinion. Lots of benches to relax

The Buckingham fountain is worth a visit to the park. The park is across the street from Lake Michigan where there are bike and walking paths. The area around the fountain is huge but lacking in benches and shaded areas. There are some benches and some trees but not enough for a city this size. Just FYI. At the time we were there, they were setting up for the Lallapalooza festival, so several areas of the park were closed off.

I love this park! There's multiple things to see and I felt safe going on a morning walk alone. There's plenty of people out with their dogs, folks walking/jogging, etc. It's quiet and a fair amount of shade but prepare for sections where you are on walkways that aren't shaded and it can get quite hot in the summer.

This is a huge park on the Lake and a place where a lot of history has happened. Now it is just loved by the residents who use it a lot in good weather.

What are the closest hotels to the park and river/lake in reasonable walking distance?

There are many great hotels within a walking distance to the park, lake, and river. Raddison Blu is a famous building itself and is about 5 minutes walk to the park and river, 10-15 minutes walk to the lake. Hyatt Regency Chicago on Wacker Dr. is also nearby. Other nearby hotels include London House (newly renovated in a historic building), Fairmont Chicago, Embassy Suites in River North, Sheraton in River North, Homewood Suites. If you search any travel reservation website, try zip code 60601 - an area within a walking distance to the park, lake, and river. Enjoy your visit!

No problem walking dogs on a leash. It was common to see them and their owners enjoying the walkways. You will notice certain areas of the park seem to attract more visitors, in fact, lots of them. Avoid those areas and use the paths in the southern area of the park.

We will be staying at the Wyndham Grand resort in Chicago and I see that Millennium Park appears to be in walking distance. We will be there when the weather is 40-50 degrees, but I know that it is colder by the lake. How far is it to walk to the other end of the park to see Buckingham Fountain? On the Chicago Parks website, it shows that the fountain is open now, so we'd like to see the water or water/light display. Walk? Drive? Where to park the car? Any suggestions?

I would definitely suggest walking. You seem to be close enough and if not, as stated there are buses. be careful with the number 10 bus however as it only runs express to the science and industry museum after a certain stop. If you are within walking distance to the bean, you can be at the fountain in another ten to fifteen minutes.
