Often visitors' first stop in Chicago, The Loop is a good starting point to sample the city's energy and flavor. This central business district boasts Michelin-rated restaurants, upscale hotels, premier shopping, and enough arresting architecture to keep your camera busy for hours. You won’t find too many photo galleries of downtown Chicago without a shot of Millennium Park and Cloud Gate (“The Bean”), one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. A stunning skyline coupled with cultural attractions like the Art Institute of Chicago present a Downtown where work and play peacefully coexist.

Macy's on State Street is all decorated for holidays. Above the entrance to the store from State Street the department store still shows its old name -- Marshall Field & Company (opened in 1852 in Chicago) -- but of course, now we all know and love it as Macy's.

Last time I visited the store was a month ago, right after Thanksgiving, when everything and everybody was getting ready for winter holidays, Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The ground floor was beautifully and imaginatively decorated, and it was all shining in festive lights; the accessories and cosmetics department were offering the abundance of items, which we usually buy as holiday gifts. One could get some great bargains, since there were sales going on in full swing.

All the associates I saw were wearing masks, most of the customers too, for that matter. And that was probably the only sign that reminded me in the store about the pandemic, since the store was full of visitors, happily shopping for the upcoming holidays!

Happy New Year, Macy's on State!

This review is for the building, not Macy's. Reservations are now required for the Walnut Room & I couldn't get one. We went to the store anyway. You're allowed a selfie
with the Christmas tree, you just can't go into the restaurant without reservations.

We looked at the Frango Mints (too expensive for the amount you get).
Admired the Burnham fountain & the Tiffany Dome. The Tiffany Dome alone is worth a trip into the store.
It was nice looking at the Christmas decorations. Macy did get that right. The windows were only ok this year.

Prepare to be overwhelmed and lost. If you go, don’t go tired. So many departments with no seeming rhyme or reason to them. Hard to find what you’re looking for. Signs clearly marked the way to the bathrooms, but bathrooms were only accessible by lock codes, but no information given on how to get the code. The building could be really cool, but looks like some of the old architecture is in desperate need of updates.

It's huge, it covers a full city block. Plenty of selections, not a lot of help. I'm glad it's still open following the closing of the Water Tower Place store.

Beautiful building in downtown Chicago. We got there right before they closed. My daughter wanted to purchase her first Chanel (lipstick) on our recent trip. Staff very helpful. Didn't feel rushed at all. My interest was that it was where Mr Selfridge of Selfridges in London got started. It reminded me a little of that store too.

If you'd enjoy the history of the Marshall Field's building and some of the original ceiling decor, then by all means, stop into Macy's. However, we were underwhelmed by the common separated areas for shopping. The food court in the basement was also disappointing. Since most towns basically have their own stores, I prefer the Macy's where I live for shopping.

Although I generally despise department stores (can never find what I want, higher prices, hate the giant perfume section that makes my nose burn, lack of access to sales staff, etc) we decided to check it out based on the recommendation of friends who live here. On their advice we headed to the 5th floor to check out the ceiling - that did not disappoint! From an architectural standpoint it was worth our time. I’d love to experience it around Christmas time for the decorations.

I go to State Street Macys every year to see the holidays windows. To say they were underwhelming this year is being polite. It really was a waste of time. They need to make them great or skip all together because this year was not worth the drive, parking and time.

It is a giant department store that has been around for a long time. There is a food court on the top floor.
