Neighbourhood: Downtown / The Loop
Often visitors' first stop in Chicago, The Loop is a good starting point to sample the city's energy and flavor. This central business district boasts Michelin-rated restaurants, upscale hotels, premier shopping, and enough arresting architecture to keep your camera busy for hours. You won’t find too many photo galleries of downtown Chicago without a shot of Millennium Park and Cloud Gate (“The Bean”), one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. A stunning skyline coupled with cultural attractions like the Art Institute of Chicago present a Downtown where work and play peacefully coexist.

We went to the store anyway. You're allowed a selfie with the Christmas tree, you just can't go into the restaurant without reservations. We looked at the Frango Mints (too expensive for the amount you get). Admired the Burnham fountain & the Tiffany Dome. The Tiffany Dome alone is worth a trip into the store. It was nice looking at the Christmas decorations. Macy did get that right. The windows were only ok this year.Visited December 2021Written 7 December 2021
- OnAnotherJourneyCanada324 contributions5th floorAlthough I generally despise department stores (can never find what I want, higher prices, hate the giant perfume section that makes my nose burn, lack of access to sales staff, etc) we decided to check it out based on the recommendation of friends who live here. On their advice we headed to the 5th floor to check out the ceiling - that did not disappoint! From an architectural standpoint it was worth our time. I’d love to experience it around Christmas time for the decorations.Visited February 2020Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 February 2020
- Sarah CAshtead, United Kingdom1,079 contributionsDisappointing at the bland shop floorHaving last visited when it was the traditional Marshall Fields, I was disappointed at the bland decor. We looked in on the Walnut Room but that had been sectioned off. I specifically wanted to buy a Christmas Tree decoration but could find these only on a floor where the were no tills, then when I did locate a till, the member of staff suggested I tip her (for what, standing behind her till being a bit surly?). Such a shame and not what I would expect from either MF or Macy'sVisited October 2022Written 14 August 2023

My partner and I were passing Macy's en route back to our hotel following our aborted trip to the aquarium - see separate review "TOO EXPENSIVE".
WEe entered to both see what the fuss was about MACY'S and to use the toilet !
There is a 900lb US flag hanging from roof to 1st floor. A massive flag !!
I would describe MACY'S as poor man's Harrods speaking from a UK perspective. Thatt should be considered a compliment.
I even bought her a momento of Chicago in MACY'S - a pair of shoes !!
The staff were engaged and helpful, if few and far between !
This is worth a visit gor the flag a door the shop generally.

A great Macy’s shop , 7 floors, expensive as usual , but worth a short visit due to the biggest Tiffany’s glass dome built in 1907 with 1.6 million glass parts . Very impressive.

Awful. We traveled all the way from Minneapolis to see Santa land. What a sad disappointment. We got stuck standing in line to see Santa for an hour when we kept telling them we didn’t want to see him and just wanted out. No one would let us out. Store was hot and sparse for goods. Bathrooms were atrocious and window displays left a lot to be desired. An overall disappointment.

I was shopping at Macy's State street store on 6/29/22. I spent over $600 dollars. i had to use the restroom and found out that i needed a code to access. Good luck finding someone to give you the code. As a person of a certain age,76, I have less control of my bladders than a younger person. This is the only Macy that I have been to that have this system. I will not return to this store and will be contacting the corporate office.

If you love to shop you have to go shopping at Macy’s! It opens at 10 am. What a beautiful place. I found the people that worked there very friendly - they know a lot of people come to see the ceiling and look at the history and they are very accommodating. A sweet member of the janitorial staff even gave us a history lesson and guided us to where we should take photos inside!

Macy's on State Street is all decorated for holidays. Above the entrance to the store from State Street the department store still shows its old name -- Marshall Field & Company (opened in 1852 in Chicago) -- but of course, now we all know and love it as Macy's.
Last time I visited the store was a month ago, right after Thanksgiving, when everything and everybody was getting ready for winter holidays, Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The ground floor was beautifully and imaginatively decorated, and it was all shining in festive lights; the accessories and cosmetics department were offering the abundance of items, which we usually buy as holiday gifts. One could get some great bargains, since there were sales going on in full swing.
All the associates I saw were wearing masks, most of the customers too, for that matter. And that was probably the only sign that reminded me in the store about the pandemic, since the store was full of visitors, happily shopping for the upcoming holidays!
Happy New Year, Macy's on State!

Does anyone know if they keep the Christmas windows up through New Years and what are the hours they are turned on? Thank you

the web site says: Shopping may be the star attraction on most visits to Macy's but over the holidays, tradition shines bright. As the first store to ever feature holiday windows for the pure fun and joy of the season, Macy's began a tradition that still lives on today. Get a glimpse of the animated scenes from November 8, 2014 through January 11, 2015.
Do you do late check outs or early checkin's? I want to book a room on Dec 22nd from 9am to 5pm. Is that possible? What would be the rate?

HI. My posting was in regards to the Macy's Department Store in downtown Chicago.
What is Macy's return policy on men's apparel with a receipt after one week?

With your original receipt you will not have a problem returning any item at Macy's.
Without your receipt, you will be given a store credit for the lowest selling price within the past 180 days.
If the item you purchased is offered at a lower price within 14 days of your original purchase, present your original receipt during the 14 days and they will credit or refund the difference, based on how you paid for the item(s).
