Often visitors' first stop in Chicago, The Loop is a good starting point to sample the city's energy and flavor. This central business district boasts Michelin-rated restaurants, upscale hotels, premier shopping, and enough arresting architecture to keep your camera busy for hours. You won’t find too many photo galleries of downtown Chicago without a shot of Millennium Park and Cloud Gate (“The Bean”), one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. It is a bascule bridge, and each end can be lifted to let river traffic through when needed. It is also believed to be the first ever double decker bridge. Faster noncommercial traffic would use the upper deck and slower commercial traffic would use the lower. For a visitor to the city, it creates an amazingly beautiful site as it sits near the historic Wrigley Building and Tribune Tower, two iconic skyscrapers in the city and right on the river. The scene is particularly stunning at night when the buildings are illuminated.Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 10 March 2024
- IrinaUnited States14,597 contributionsGreat Chicago LandmarkI always like to visit Michigan Avenue Bridge (Du Sable Bridge). It is an iconic site and designated Chicago Landmark (1991), it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1978, it is always busy with traffic and pedestrians, the views from the bridge are fantastic, giving a clear understanding of the importance of the bridge both historically and in present times. In my perception, Michigan Avenue Bridge (DuSable Bridge) is a great symbol of Chicago as a modern, vibrant, open-minded city with diverse demographics, and for the last two and a half years it is also a symbol of strength and support of people, fighting for freedom in other countries of the world.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 20 June 2024

Accordingly, it is always crowded, apart from in the morning, that is still possible. Here you have many Chicago typical views of the surrounding buildings, which makes the bridge such a special place. There is also often someone there who plays an instrument or ice cream, drinks and fruit are sold mobile.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 August 2024

The views up along the River and Michigan Ave. are well worth a few minutes of your time. Weather / the season allowing for it, take a River Taxi or cruise on the River and along the Lake-front. Chicago at its best.

The Michigan Av Bridge is also called DuSable bridge in honor of Jean Baptiste du Sable, where his first homestead used to be and who is considered the Chicago founder and its first resident.
On the bridge southern side, the 19th century Fort Dearborn was established. The bridge was opened to public in 1920.
Around the bridge are some of the city most historic landmarks - the Tribune and Wrigley towers, and from the newer era the Trump tower.
DuSable bridge offers terrific city views standing in the middle of Magnificent Mile.

For me this was the center of Chicago. The River was the divide between the Magnificent Mile, retail and residential district of downtown, north of the river and the Loop, commercial and visitor district of downtown, south of the river, while Michigan divided the Lake from the Interior. We crossed this bridge multiple times during our visit and it was such an impressive place to be over the water surrounded by the tallest and most important buildings in the city. It is here at the bridge that you find landmark buildings like the Tribune Tower and the Wrigley Building. This does not even include the bridge itself which is adorned with architectural features. Finally, we did a river cruise which allowed us to go under the bridge. Again for me, this was the center of Chicago.

I went to Chicago 31 years ago and returned this year. I found it as wonderful as it was then. Naturally a little changed but for the better. A magnificently livable city, it has everything: it is on a human scale, you can easily get around it on foot, it has everything you could want, such as a splendid and elegant centre.
(The Magnificence Mile), is very clean, has a splendid navigable river (don't miss the cruise), a bathing lake that looks like a sea, cycle paths, pedestrian paths along all the banks, little beaches to relax in, splendid parks. Both along the river and along the lake there are bars, restaurants and shops. Don't miss the Navy Pier, a green area with a splendid Ferris wheel overlooking the lake, the 360 skyscraper from which you can admire a breathtaking view, the Buckingham fountain, Millennium Park, the Art Institute, the Willis tower which is the tallest of 360 but has a view of the city while the 360, both of the city and the lake. If you love music, don't miss the House of blues where the Blues Brothers filmed many songs for the film of the same name and where you can eat magnificent meat while listening to good blues music. Everything splendid. There is of course a subway, there are trains but if you have time (about a week) you can easily visit everything on foot, enjoying every part of it. Outside the center there are suburbs but if you don't know the area it's better not to go into them. Some, however, are very beautiful to look at, real American suburbs with the big road in the center and then all the little streets with the various villas....... one of these is Villa Park about 20 minutes drive from Chicago. There is nothing to see but in these places they are only residential and you can only find large shopping centers. The only negative is that there are no other large metropolitan cities nearby to visit. You can go to Indiana two hours away and Milwaukee. But Chicago is undoubtedly worth seeing!!!!!

Chicago
Michigan Avenue
One of the sights of the great city of Chicago is called Michigan Street, which is a great place for sightseeing and adventure with its large streets and buildings. All famous brands are present on Michigan Street, and of course expensive. On one side of Michigan Street, there is a river that can surprise you. There are tall and unique buildings on this street.

Beautiful views of the river, but the crowds on the bridge are just unimaginable. There are so many places to enjoy the river but the views of the Wrigley Building and the Tribune Tower are the best from the bridge. If you are on the bridge in the morning you would be able to enjoy the vistas without massive crowds.

The views from the bridge are well worth the effort to walk across. We stopped to take the iconic selfie with the Tribune Tower in the background. The bridge is also busy with pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

I don’t know that I can say this is a must see activity, but if you’re crossing over the river, might as well use this bridge. Nice to stop and take a look at the boats going by below. I didn’t really think much of the bridge at the time, but it does have some style and some nice lamp posts and period pieces.

The Michigan Avenue Bridge has been officially renamed over a decade ago, and since 2010 it is referred to as The DuSable Bridge -- named after Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, regarded as the first permanent settler in Fort Dearborn, which in 1837 became the city of Chicago.
In my opinion, the bridge deserves the highest compliments from the view point of a historic perspective. Over a hundred years (it was opened in 1920), the bridge has been an invaluable central connection of The Near North Side of the city with The Chicago Loop, both for vehicles and pedestrians. It is a trunnion bascule bridge, and in the spring and fall months it is raised twice weekly , so that the sailboats can pass between Lake Michigan and inland boat yards.
There are commemorative plaques on the walls of the bridge, and the outer walls of the four bridgehouses are decorated with the monumental sculptures, marking the important historic milestones -- events, dates, historic figures in the discovery and development, protection and regeneration of the land of Illinois, of Fort Dearborn, of Chicago. The bridge is listed in NRHP (1978), and it is designated a Chicago Landmark (1991).
Every year, millions of tourists from all over the world visit Chicago, walking along this bridge all the time, admiring the beautiful Chicago River, the unique skyline of the city and its fascinating historic buildings.
It would be fair to say, that The DuSable Bridge (The Michigan Avenue Bridge) is a prominent site for many, who are happy to appreciate the long-term service of the bridge and its historic significance.

Michigan Avenue has always been one of my favorite walks in Chicago.
But something special happens when you cross this bridge - at least for me. You get to look east and west and see (and feel) the beauty and energy along the Chicago River. You also see the amazing architecture right there - Wrigley Building, Tribune Tower and Trump Tower a short distance away. You begin to realize why this is called the Magnificent Mile, because it is!!
This bridge was a significant piece of the vision for Michigan Avenue.
The bridge was named the DuSable bridge in 2010, and as far as bridges go, it’s special too, carrying two levels of people and traffic across the river.
It’s also a great vantage point to see all the bridges connecting the north and south sides of various streets over the river.
I love it!

Just take the Metra and the bus to get to the bridge.

There are plenty of mass transit ways to get there as well as an Uber. Also plenty to do shopping experience wise and dining.

I'd use public transportation to get downtown instead of trying to drive and park downtown. And there is too much traffic to really see anything while you're driving.
