About
In accordance with CDC recommendations, the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust requests that both vaccinated and unvaccinated persons wear a face mask indoors at all Trust sites. (8/3/21) The Frederick C. Robie House on the University of Chicago campus is considered one of the most important buildings in the history of American architecture. This Prairie style masterpiece is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the 20th Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright List. Discover the residence Wright described as “a cornerstone of modern architecture” on guided tours that take in both the exterior and interior of the building. Inspired by the expansive landscape of the Midwest prairie, Wright’s Robie House is the most famous of the architect’s groundbreaking Prairie houses. Public tours are available Thursday - Monday. The museum is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Visit flwright.org to learn more.

If you have interest in architecture, FLW this house is a great example of his work. The guide was very knowledgeable and the house is in pretty nice shape. Always want more furniture in the houses, particularly FLW designed, but there were even a few examples of this. We even sprung for the exterior audio tour that takes you a few blocks north and south and describes the architecture surrounding the Robie House neighborhood. Really enjoyed that also.

Excellent tour of the house that explains why certain choices were made in its design. The extra $10 for the audio tour outside the house is NOT worth it; you’ll be fine with the $20 house tour.

I missed going to Oak park so was happy to be able to tour this fabulous structure. The guide was very knowledgeable and patient with many questions from the small group.

The Robbie house was real nice visit and I’d wished I’d had time for a guided tour but as part of the University of Chicago campus area you can see it’s exterior for free. That alone is worth a visit. There are many FLW homes in Chicago but not this area of the city.

True to the World Heritage inscription that Robie House is part of, it exhibits discernible elements of “organic architecture” and a number of techniques and solutions that mark Frank Lloyd Wright as one of the foremost innovators of the 20th century in his field. And yet in visual terms, it is a bit underwhelming once you step inside. There are lovely partially stained-glass windows throughout, notable built-in features doubling as decorative elements, and examples of impressive masonry echoing the exterior, but the relative emptiness of the house mutes the impression quite a bit.

If you are a student of architecture, especially its modern history, you will certainly get value out of your visit. The guide provides a lot of context, historical nuggets, and rationale behind architectural decisions to make the trip worthwhile. Those who expect visual impact may be disappointed. Other Wright's buildings, such as Guggenheim and Fallingwater are degrees of magnitude more impressive. Even Kentuck Knob, which is not part of the WH inscription, retains a bigger visual impression in my memory.

Guided tours run throughout the day, starting every half hour and lasting about 45 minutes. Advanced reservations are required these days.

My wife and I went on the Robie house tour for the first time and found it super interesting. Wright's design are quite beautiful and unique and this tour is a great way to experience his talents and family life. Great tour for out of towners and life long Chicagoans.

Gary’s first tour as the lead guide! Good job Gary! Very easy to Uber here, not near a Metro. Nice house (Typical FLW Chicago Prairie, we prefer Darwin Martin House in Buffalo as ‘The best FLW Prairie’) with a quality restoration. Super welcoming staff in gift shop and over the phone. Great to contrast with Driehaus Museum as another style of ‘Post Chicago Fire’ construction and way of life.

Was here for a friend's wedding and it was stunning. The house itself is a work of art and they used a 3rd party catering service which was sufficient.
