- Tya P13 contributionsMust do!!!This was the BEST thing we did in Iceland and made our trip! It wasn’t even part of my itinerary but we did it after we missed secret lagoon due to weather and I wanted to be sure to get a hot springs experience (Blue lagoon cancelled us 2 times due to volcano). Anyways it was for the best because this was mine and my husband favorite part of the trip and truly experiencing nature and a natural hot spring. The hike is long .. varying reports on length and time. To me it felt like 2 miles ish and steep going there. Winter and full snow took us maybe 1.25hours. Definitely need crampons or spikes. There is a part where your on the edge of a cliff so need to be careful. Coming back was easy though and less than an hour going down hill. Once you reach the magical destination it’s put heaven. The water is hotter as you go further up river. It was probably 104F. It was amazing. Even with the weather being 20s I had to get out and lay in snow to cool down and then get back in water. There is not changing room so come with your suit on and be ready to freeze some buns off when your changing out. But you will be so warm it will be fine to be cold for a few minutes while changing. Overall a must do for sure!!!Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 February 2024
- patellaOwensboro129 contributionsHarder then I expected but worth itThe information in town said it was an hour hike. I am a little slow but it took me two hours. It was 3.5 km each way. The view was beautiful and worth the hike. However the trail was muddy and icey in spots. I didn’t get in the thermal pools so can’t comment. There was a 1000 ft of elevation gain but that seemed in the first 3/4 of a mile.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 March 2024
- Marbles20Calgary, Canada299 contributions3.7km trail with incline, need to be stable hiker and understand the conditions but absolute must do!Ok here we go! Although I read alot of reviews ahead of time I think we didn't completely understand the hike (and All Tr*** isn't completely accurate in the reviews/distances). Here is the nitty gritty: Beautiful - must do.....but you need to be able bodied and understand the trail (we saw a few people struggling who didn't know...and others who were RUNNING or mountain biking up the trail....YMMV) It is closer to 3.7KM (approx 1hr) to the actual bathing spot. When you reach it the area is very developed with boardwalks and easy access to the water. No it is not a raging river - it is a shallow (easy for everyone!) stream that you sit/lay in. (for anyone who wants a full dip, coverage/swimming, try a hot springs facility) The trail is moderate - meaning some of the incline is intense, others parts are for all-abilities. The steepest part is at the beginning from the parking lot however there are other parts that are a bit of an incline. Views are beautiful - that said some of the trail is more narrow and there are no guardrails for those concerned about heights or walking conditions. We were there on a beautiful day however the trail was indeed muddy and uneven - need to be a steady hiker and have good shoes (yes we saw some in flip flops....not recommended) Little changing privacy dividers really are not private at all....not a concern for some but a real concern for others. Be prepared to change in the washroom at the parking lot if you like privacy. This is not a commercial site - need to take your own snacks, water, towel, etc. Overall 10/10 - would be happy to do it again!Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 26 July 2024
- domglonLondon, United Kingdom35 contributionsGreat trip. Love the springs. One of the best things we did in Iceland. The walk is quite hard work - uphill most of the way and very windy but well worth it. The river hot springs bit is great. Not much space and no facilities but the water is bath temperature and very relaxing. A reward after your hike. Walk back was much easier as mostly downhill albeit the wind was in our face. Great cafe in the car park. Absolutely no point booking a tour unless you want to ride a horse there and back (which looked great fun).Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 31 July 2024
- AustintoBostonBoston, Massachusetts410 contributionsAway From the CrowdsAwesome hike within 45 minutes of downtown Reykjavik. Plenty of parking, and during business hours there is a nice coffee shop with food/beer at the base. It took me slightly under 1 hr to reach the springs which was a much appreciated break at that point. Beware that changing facilities are limited - we had to awkwardly stake one out - they don't have any curtains, so if you plan to take a dip you'll be momentarily stripping down, but this is the norm and no one seems to care. If anything, you'd think they would put up more stalls seeing the popularity of the trail. The springs are shallow, but toward the back, where it was much more crowded, they are slightly deeper. Overall I think I enjoyed the hike more than the springs itself, but the springs were a nice reward by the end.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 1 August 2024

Visiting the river in February and so very, very cold. They say it’s 3km to get to the first part where you can bath in the waters and mist of it is straight up. A hard climb for three quarters of the way. Beautiful views on the way, but a tough slog. On snow, the right clothing and shoes are essential. Don’t even think about doing it in trainers etc. At the river it’s worth the climb. There are no changing rooms, just an area you can stand behind to shield you modesty.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Iceland! I will complain about the parking lot though! Parking was easy/fine but I had downloaded the Parka app before our trip and either used that or would pay at a booth at every other attraction. We arrived at the hot springs to find there was no option to pay for parking other than downloading another app called Easy Park. It said there was free wifi in the cafe but I had a lot of issues getting it to download and had to have my husband try on his phone because it froze on my phone and wouldn't download. It was just annoying after having already set up a different parking app. They charged by hour here rather than a flat fee. Otherwise we loved this stop! It is 2.5 miles UPHILL though so be ready for it! It's pretty steep at the beginning. The views are spectacular and it levels off a bit and isn't quite as steep but it doesn't ever really stop being an uphill climb. It's so worth it when you get there though! There isn't much privacy for changing so be warned. There are a few wooden partitions you can kind of hide behind but just think you're in Europe! Be European! The hot springs was DELIGHTFUL after the hard hike up. We loved every minute of it. The hike back down is much easier however the bugs were TERRIBLE on the way down. The midges drove us crazy on the way down. Ive heard of people buying head nets for the midges in other parts of Iceland and you could definitely use it here on the way down. For some reason they didn't bother us on the way up. We loved this spot!

A great uphill hike and great reward with the hot springs above.
Parking at the bottom was easy, had free wifi so was able to download the app and pay easily (they scan you plate on the way in and out and generate charge after you leave, reasonable rates, don't recall exactly price!) Bathrooms available at building by parking lot, and then no more when depart, good to keep in mind. Cute restaurant and small gift shop there too. We over dressed, had to carry a lot of layers as it is a big uphill trek and we warmed up quickly. Lots of sheep, streams and steam vents to see along the way. Would definitely recommend bringing water shoes, the rocks are a bit hard to walk on barefoot when in the springs. We spent probably 1hr in the springs, which was perfect. We went all the way to the top point available to go in (boardwalk ends and "closed" sign at end) and then worked our way back a little to temp we liked (hottest at top)--really interesting where the cool stream feds into the hot spring stream, nice if you get too hot!

This was disappointing! We were so excited to experience this and despite the heavy rain we pushed through the hour long walk to the top only to realize the water was cold! I should have read more reviews- it was not only pouring rain that day but had rained the day before so all the warmth was gone and the river was also flooding in some spots.
I’m sure it would’ve been fantastic weather permitting... but if it happens to be raining when you are planning to do this I would say skip it.

We went at sunrise and it was the most beautiful walk we have ever done. It took us around 60 minutes to reach the top of the river (this was stopping to take photos) and we enjoyed feeling the pools of water get warmer as we ascended. The contrast of being in the snow and then the hot river was breathtaking! A once in a lifetime experience. We went first thing in the morning and we had the river to ourselves for 30 mins before the next people arrived.
WARNING: do not let your hair get wet - it will freeze!

My wife and I made for the trail head early one weekday morning, hopefully before it became too busy. We were confused about how to pay for parking - there was a parking app which we could download or we could pay by credit card. The initial stages of the walk were quite steeply uphill. The well marked path was either cinder, gravel or firm mud. Even though it had rained recently the going was firm. Eventually, the path levelled out and there was a gradual descent to the river. It took us about 75 minutes to reach the part of the river where we could bathe. There was a length of board walk along each side of the river. There were also some wooden panels which served as open cubicles so bathers could change before entering the water. Water shoes proved beneficial as the river was quite stony. At the point where we entered the river, also where we could walk no further as the route was closed off, the water was very hot. It was just like a very hot bath. We soaked in the water for about half an hour, before getting out to dress. After a picnic lunch, the walk downhill took about an hour before we reached the car. There were large numbers of people making their way up the trail in the early afternoon. We finally elected to pay by credit card for the parking - a much simpler proposition. It was 250 ISK per hour which funds the upkeep of the site.

From the parking lot, it is about three hours round trip along a path that is not very steep and is easily accessible. It is amazing how many fumaroles can be seen along the entire path, covering the entire landscape. You pay for parking at the beginning and there is a cafeteria where you can recharge your batteries. In the end there is the possibility of outdoor bathrooms, without changing rooms. A few simple vertical wooden dividers give you some privacy and no protection from the cold. But it is worth swimming in shallow waters. It is one of the less crowded excursions that are worth it. Throughout the way you can see the typical Icelandic landscape, volcanic with slight touches of green, between hot springs that give that air between lunar and supernatural to Iceland. It's funny, it seems as if they were burning stubble all over the mountain.

This is a hotspring river offering free thermal bathing. Exceptionally good fun. You need 3-4 hours for this activity. The parking lot charges 250 ISK per hour with a café and WC. There are no facilities at the bathing area but wooden partitions were erected to provide limited privacy for changing clothes. About 37-38'C I reckon. You better come with a beach towel. Be reminded that it takes about 60 minutes with some steep hiking before getting to this spot with good scenery along. We took 70 minutes as we were slower. If you have half day for this and are reasonable hikers, then this is highly recommended. Otherwise, you better not try as we saw some frustrated visitors along the way.

The hike up to the river was longer than anticipated and a bit more challenging due to snow and ice. Someone fell badly on the way down requiring medical rescue so crampons advised in the winter. It was a unique experience to bathe in a geothermal river but it was slightly underwhelming and only luke warm at best..most probably due to the weather at this time of the year. Still a trip worth taking if lacking something to do in the area.

The hike to the river was made more enjoyable by the snow covered landscape, and also more challenging for those who don’t like heights on some of the upper sections where the path was completely covered. A little persistence was rewarded by great views and a sense of achievement when arriving at the river.
The air temperature being around freezing made the water more inviting. Although an upper section of the river was closed there was still plenty of room for us and fellow hikers. A quick change behind the screens and dash to the warm and fairly fast flowing water was required. Once in, the water and air around was warm and it was comfortable lying on the river bed, stones, and looking about at the snow covered valley. After changing the return hike was enjoyable and taken together this felt like a really authentic experience rounded off with a coffee in the well stocked shop/cafeteria at the base of the walk.

From what I’ve read elsewhere, it seems that bathing in the river nude is not prohibited, but that most tourists choose to wear swimsuits. So many people go in the water nude, and can you get in trouble for doing so? Given it’s in the middle of nowhere and there aren’t strict ‘rules’ I assume it’s OK?
Written 27 November 2019
I’ll speak as an Icelander. You can go nude no problem at all, Icelanders will not care and there is no law against nudity in Iceland. Indecent exposure is illegal so long as you don’t stand in front of people doing the “helicopter” you should be fine.
It may shock some puritan tourists but who cares, it’s their shame not yours.
If you consider being topless nude you may like to know that women can walk around topless wherever they want. Downtown Reykjavík if they choose to do so.
Iceland is body positive country and quite liberal when it comes to nudity. I saw some other people say otherwise but it’s incorrect. Free your Willy… we don’t care.

Wondering if there is there any kind of washroom facility at the car park?

There is a car park there. But you need to walk around 45 minutes up and over a mountain to get to the valley

How strenuous is the hike? I will be 6 months pregnant and not very athletic.
Written 9 March 2019
The hike is somewhat strenuous. We started the hike with my mom who is 75 and she decided to quit about a quarter of the way up. Both me and my friend (50) continued on and made it all the way to the springs. We did stop a few times because it is entirely uphill and also started snowing heavily (we were there in October). I think that if you give yourself plenty of time and stop when you are out of breath, you will be fine.

Is the trail easy enough to see when covered in snow? I really want to do this hike the first week of March, but I don't want to go off trail by mistake. Thanks!
