About
The Geothermal Exhibition is located inside of the largest geothermal power plant in Iceland. Visitors can take a self-guided audio tour through the exhibition, learning about geothermal energy and production at the plant. From the top floor it is possible to look down into the turbine halls. Guests can see the plant's separation tanks, pipe systems, cooling towers, and more from the viewing decks. The exhibition also has a gift shop, cafe area, and water bottle refill station. Stop by for a visit to the exhibition, or on your way to the beautiful hiking trails in the surrounding area. Our experienced staff is happy to answer questions or chat about sustainable energy.

I'm a graduate student studying energy policy and renewable technology, so this was right up my alley. Also very easy to get to right off Route 1. The self-guided tour does a great job explaining in lay terms what exactly CarbFix does. Be ready for the sulfur smell of rotten eggs, but that's a small price to pay to learn about how Iceland powers its grid and heats homes. Make sure to ask someone there about the Orka fans that are about two hundred meters away. Would recommend for anyone interested in renewable energy and carbon capture!

A real geothermal plant! Modern and lots of information using models, diagrams, videos. Staff is also very friendly and helpful. It's hard to compete with stunning waterfalls and other natural wonders, but this is a good stopping place on the Golden Circle (between Kerid crater and Reykjavik) and it's all indoors, if you want to do something out of the rain/cold weather.

Thank you for your review! We're happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the exhibition and we will pass the compliments along to our staff. It is hard to compete with Iceland's natural beauty, but we're lucky to be located in a fantastic location & our exhibition provides a lot of great context for the other places you will visit in the country :) We hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Iceland, and thank you for visiting us.

With an engineer and a former nuclear power operator in the family, you know we would be all over this site. We all enjoyed the displays and explanation of how the wonderful heat and power of Iceland is created.

I would have loved to get inside the turbine rooms but I understand the liabilities involved.

It’s a good way to spend an hour on your way to or from Reykjavik.

This exhibition demonstrates the wonder of human innovation. But despite not understanding exactly how all this works, the fact that 99:5% of the homes in Iceland are heated by geothermal energy is, we thought, incredible. The whole concept was very well presented and the staff was helpful and knowledgeable. We scheduled the 4pm slot and it wasn’t quite enough time before they closed so do try to go earlier. It’s worth it!

Thank you for the review! We're glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the exhibition and we will pass the kind words along to our staff. Geothermal energy produces roughly 30% of the country's electricity, and approximately 90% of the country's space heating. The Hellisheiði Geothermal Power Plant produces 303 MW of electricity. We're sorry to hear you felt that an hour wasn't enough time - hopefully you downloaded the audio guide, and can listen to the information wherever you are after your visit :) if not, please send us an email to syning@or.is and we are happy to help. This is a very interesting and well done exhibit. The self guided tour is great and the information is clear and creatively displayed. It shows that sustainable energy is achievable and the entire plant is an example. We spent about 1.5 hours casually going through. Very glad we made time for this.

Our opening guide was excellent, her enthusiasm and knowledge base for the plant and island were respectable. As an engineer/contractor couple, this was and is for anyone else of the same interests or careers a site not to miss. The layout of the tour and plant for educational purposes is commendable. This should be an optional trip for ALL engineer programs across the globe. I look forward to keeping track of Carbonfix with a new presepective!

The visit was excellent and I highly recommend the exhibition. The information and graphics were accessible for adults and children alike and my 10 year old loved the hands on explanations. Well worth a visit. The exhibition space was large and light and the staff very friendly.

Facility was beautiful. Staff was excellent. However, mentioning that this was a self-guided tour (with excellent smart phone multimedia) would have been helpful. We were hoping to see and hear more about the actual process of power generation and see the equipment, beyond looking at the generators through a viewing window. Still, a very nice exhibit. Not sure if I would have driven an hour each way though had I known.

Thank you for your review and kind words about our team! We're sorry to hear that you were expecting a different type of visit - our website only has Self-Guided Audio Tour tickets available, but if you booked through a third party we would love to hear which platform it was so that we can correct any incorrect information. If you'd like, you can contact us at syning@or.is so that we can improve this for future visitors :) We also appreciate your feedback about seeing more of the production parts of the plant. It is unfortunately not possible to go into the actual power plant due to safety and security reasons, but the viewing rooms on our third floor allow you to see the high and low pressure turbine halls with both turbines and generators. From the back decks you can see pipe systems, separation tanks, cooling towers, and a steam regulator. We have been looking into creating a 3D model of other parts of the plant, and will pass this review along to the team working on that. Thank you again for your visit and for taking the time to leave us with this feedback. Have a great day!

We got there right after our arrival into Iceland, and were a bit jet lagged. We chose the self guided tour and downloaded the app easily and were off. There was another tour nearby, so we could listen in to that as well. All the stations were interesting and it was presented well so you could understand, but also engaging for the scientists in the family! What a cool place doing amazing science for our planet! Highly recommend it!

I knew nothing about geothermal power in Iceland before visiting this centre. It is good to learn how all of Reykjavik is heated and supplied with energy without polluting the atmosphere. It is a clean and well presented power station for visitors who have little knowledge of the subject. It is free to enter and a worthwhile exoperience. It is close to Rekjavik.
