When we found out about this excursion, we made some major itinerary changes to fit it in. It was really worth it! It's just as fantastic as you might imagine to go out on a little ship with some salty-but-actually-pretty-cool sailors who take you out to what looks like an enchanted island where the puffins and eagles life. As you get closer you notice swarms of blackbirds, then you realize those are PUFFINS!!! , then you see them bobbling around in the water beside the boat. Unreal. At one point the captain started banging on a metal post and some beautiful eagles flew out to see what was making the noise. It was wonderful. Things to be prepared for: You really do need a strong camera lens if you want to take any really GOOD photos. You are close enough to see the wonder, but really not at all close enough to get a good photo with a regular lens. There was a guy in our group with one of those lenses like you see photographers with at football games -- extra long. At first I thought that might be overdoing it, but when I was struggling to get a good shot, I started to feel very jealous of that guy. When you're under a bunch of birds, you should probably expect to get some droppings on you or on something you're carrying. I don't think I'd take little kids. There was a sweet family on board with us with little kids and a baby in a carrier. Since you don't really get close enough to sit and stare at the puffins in all their colorful glory as you might at a zoo, you have to know what you're looking at and scour the water as you go to see them bobbing up from under the water. I don't think the little kids had very much fun because they couldn't really see any of the action long enough to process it and feel happy about it. Overall, a great time and now we can tell our friends we saw puffins in the Arctic Circle.

The boat trip to watch the impressive puffin colony on an island near Sto was absolutely great. The guide, Kristoffer, is a very nice guy with a great sense of humour. He gave some interesting insights on the birds and the area in general. Overall, very highly recommended!

This tour was wonderful. It is a small boat that only holds 8 and you are very close to the water. You get to see harbor seals, puffins, and many other birds. Our guide was great! It was very overcast and foggy, but we still went out and still saw everything. So if you book ahead of time, go anyway, no matter the weather. Definitely worth it!
