New Echota, Cherokee Capital prior to Trail of Tears removal.
Sep 2021 • Couples
We are interested in the Cherokee and the awful removal of the people during the Trail of Tears. I was researching some info and found the New Echota Historical Site in Calhoun Ga. I highly recommend this trip. Very educational and very knowledgeable staff. New Echota was the Capital of the Cherokee until the removal in 1838.
When you first enter and after paying the small fee you can view the museum area which has some very informative displays. You can watch a short video of around 15 minutes which is extremely informative. Once done inside you then do the self guided tour outside via a tour map. Very well worth this amazing visit.

A Cherokee settlement
Aug 2021
Since we are interested in history, we felt this would be a good stop and it was. There is a fee to enter the grounds. Begin your visit by viewing the video, then proceed to the small museum before walking on the grounds to view the various buildings. Be aware that there is not a paved path but rather grassy paths which can be very dewy after a rain storm. The site is well kept. The gift shop is very small and there is adequate parking.

TOTALLY Unexpected and TOTALLY Amazing!
Dec 2020
Here's yet another reason we are involved in geocaching! We would probably have never known about or visited this place if there hadn't been a "virtual" and an Adventure Lab here. What fun! We learned so much that we never had any idea about, and took a ton of photos (some for Julia's business - she's a photographer - and some for my personal interest in all things historic and Native American in particular). We stayed for quite a while and visited just about everything on-site. This is one of the few attractions on this week's trip that I would HIGHLY recommend, and even come back to.

Learned a Lot
Dec 2020 • Couples
Great visit! We were the only ones there. We watched the 15 minute video and toured the little museum before walking the grounds. It really gave you the overall history of the Cherokee Indians and the Trail of Tears. Walking the grounds was at an easy pace. They have sound boxes to tell you stories as well as QR codes so you can listen to stories on your phone as well. We didn’t do the extra nature trails but they didn’t appear to be any more difficult than the main tour map. If your passing through it is worth the stop. We were actually there 2.5 hours total but if you walk faster you can do it in less time. Oh and if you can spare an extra 30 min,you can drive on the original trail of tears path.

Great experience to learn about the Cherokee Indians. The facility was well kept and the staff was very helpful. My grandson is 5 and liked it a lot. He learned about the Cherokee Indians and now has seen the Trail of Tears. He asked where the tears were:)

The history about the treatment of the Cherokee is heart-rending; they were peaceable, hard-working people. The history of this place is amazing!

Homeschool Road Trip
Oct 2019 • Family
We went from Michigan to New Echota for a homeschool road trip and I'm so glad that we did. We learned so much from actually being there than we could have learned by reading history in a book. The grounds were well reconstructed and easy to walk a self guided tour. I'm so glad that the opportunity still exists to travel back in history to experience what it was like before Trail of Tears.

I learned my grandfather escape the trail of tears, professing to be part white, but he was made to sell his land back to Ga. to put in the Ga. lottery. This story really got interesting, I found my fathers name under his father, Noah Higgins. my dad Zollie and twin sis Ollie, my review, extreme enlighten!

We really love this place. It has so much history. We live locally and it is so nice to pay the small fee and just simply walk around, enjoy the beauty of nature and the houses and buildings.

Great piece of history
Jun 2019 • Couples
Park is well run with lots to see. Small museum and theatre with an informative video. Several buildings to explore on the grounds, and a great place to walk in nice weather. There's an audio tour you can acces through your cell phone to supplement the info listed on each building. An important part of history that has been preserved. Staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and eager to answer questions. Be sure to drive a short distance up the road to tour the Chief Vann Plantation as well.
