I love St Augustine. The old historic district with the beautiful architecture and the churches and the colleges and the restaurants....it is just such a wonderful ambience..... I was there in 2016 and we came back this year.... Well for the most part.. the day is is okay ...but we decided to look for places to eat towards evening 8:30 9:00 and look for a band and the streets were loaded with homeless vagrants .. one guy was sleeping under a paper bag and I don't remember this back in 2016 and I have been there before that... but possibly we were never really walking around at night....... On one of the nights we decided to get ice cream right before closing at 10:00 and we sat by a fountain outside the restaurant and I heard hacking and coughing and all sorts of stuff and I turned around and there was a homeless guy just laying in the alley by the stores.... It is sad .. but it's scary and I think Saint Augustine being such a big tourist attraction with people coming from all over the world ....there has to be something they can do about this.. to make people feel safer when they visit. I have read reviews where a lot of people will not be back because of that and some people aren't bothered by it ...but still. I felt uncomfortable ... So ....you will see that in the day but probably more at night and I guess you just don't go out at night in the downtown area.. what are you going to do....

You can find any type of food here as well as a shop to fit your needs. Lots of people but not so many you get annoyed. Loved the sight seeing along with ice cream, fudge shops, clothes, leather, etc.

Serious homeless problem that the city ignores/ leaves unchecked. Sleeping in streets some aggressively begging if they are not passed out in broad daylight. I see cops but they are not enforcing vagrancy laws and clearing them out of what is the tourist core of the city. When I go to Naples Florida I have never seen a single one as they clearly don't tolerate it. Not returning to St Augustine until they decide clean the old city up.

You cannot visit St Augustine without walking around the old town and admiring the architecture. Some really beautiful sites.
I know some of the recent reviews mention the homeless but we weren’t disturbed by them at all and it certainly didn’t detract from our visit.
St Augustine is definitely on our list of places to return to if we are over this way again.

This is not our first and certainly not our last visit. Im now 48 and have been here many times from the time I turned 14. However, the homeless problem was very obvious and definitely changed the aesthetic, but we had no problems from it. I feel as though the negative reviews are as all negative reviews are, from people that just like to bitch and you cant make happy. I love St. Augustine, its beautiful and I love just being there.

Interesting half-day activity walking among centuries-old buildings. Better appreciated if a person has some historical context. Ancient city gate to the north (so small by today's standards). Lots of shops, restaurants/bars in historic buildings (recommend the specialty popsicles!) It's worth an investigation.

Just be aware, the amount of homeless people in the historic district is surprising and a horrible look for this area. They are sleeping between the shops and everywhere. It's something visitors need to know and be prepared to see in the 'hyped up historic district "

While the restaurant and the history were great to experience, the plight of the homeless was evident everywhere. St. George street and near by park had homeless sleeping everywhere and panhandling. Unfortunately, for a city that is making money on tourism, you think they could help the homeless in their own city. The smell of body order and urine at some corners was pretty pungent. Other cities, such as Cocoa Beach provide showers and laundry facilities once a month for the homeless. For a college town, it is pretty concerning in the evenings.
