About
Tropic Cinema is South Florida's only nonprofit multiplex cinema screening 1st-run indie, foreign and documentary films and Hollywood blockbusters every day. With 4 theaters, state-of-the art projection services and the best concessions stand anywhere (we serve wine and beer and drizzle our popcorn with 100% melted butter), it's no wonder Florida Monthly magazine named Tropic Cinema "Florida's Best Cinema" for four consecutive years.

We were looking forward to watching Oscar nominated Live Action Short Films. The (foreign) films were shown without subtitles prompting most of the audience to ask for a refund. Amazingly, the manager said they had been showing this all week without complaints.
This is an insult to the filmmakers who have produced this award winning art.
I can’t imagine this is how they imagined their work being presented.
The theater must make it clear to patrons when selling tickets for films in this fashion.

The Tropis is a wonderful movie theater with 4 screens. The concessions include beer and wine with the freshest popcorn. Each theater is unique offering a large auditorium as well as smaller, more intimate, viewing spaces. The decor is art deco and updated. You'll enjoy the best of moving going in Key West.

You can't miss this theater on Eaton Street in Key West. The outside is very colorful and your eyes will be drawn to it. The week we were in Key West, some of the movies showing were Logan, Do Not Resist, and 1984. This would be a good rainy day activity. The main attraction at the Tropic Cinema is a life size statue of Marilyn Monroe! She is beautiful and so life-like! My husband took my picture beside of it. It makes a good photo opportunity. So, when you are on Eaton in Key West, get your picture taken with Marilyn and check out the movie theater too!

Our sculpture of Marilyn is one of the most photographed spots in Key West. We're glad that you discovered her and appreciate you taking the time to write about it.

I am willing to bet that there isn't another movie theatre on the planet that has a closet with left-behind sweatshirts and sweaters for patrons to wear!! When it is 88 degrees outside one isn't likely to think about bringing one, especially if you drop in on a whim when they are playing something you want to see and you have no definite plans for the next few hours. I jokingly asked if they had a 'lost' sweaters around that I could wear during the movie in the welcome air conditioning and they showed me to a utility closet with a rack of castaways! Big bonus points!

Perhaps this is the world's smallest multiplex, but don't let my use of that word scare you. Except for the fact that it shows movies and sells snacks, this place has nothing in common with your typical megaplex. There are several small theaters (the one we were in probably had only 20 or 2 seats). The decor is quaint and quirky, and the statue of Marilyn out front is not to be missed. The movies range from blockbusters to artsy fare, so there's probably something to suit any taste. Many (perhaps all?) of the people working the theater are volunteers. Instead of buying tickets or refreshments from a grunting teen who just wants you to go away, you are treated to the positive attitude of somebody who wants to be there for the love of movies and the movie experience. Ordinarily, I wouldn't dream of going to the movies while on vacation, because I'd rather spend my time seeing the attractions that are unique to the town I'm visiting. In this case, I'm really glad I spent some vacation time at Tropic Theater, because it is (deservedly) one of the top attractions in Key West.

Dear Pope_Elvis_The_First, Thank you for your visit to the Tropic and for your kind words. You're right that more that 95% of the folks who work for the nonprofit Tropic are volunteers -- and I agree that they help create an ambiance you just can't find at a commercial movie house. You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned "the movie experience." Fact is, you can see movies almost anywhere now: at home; on a smart phone; on the seat back in a plane. We focus on the movie experience at the Tropic: small, but state-of-the-art theaters, 100% melted butter drizzled on the popcorn, clean theaters and restrooms, wine and beer at our concession stand -- and as you said, folks who are there because they love the movies -- both customers and volunteers. When our members and customers remark that their movie experience has been excellent, well, it makes our day. Thank you, Matthew

Went to see a movie on a rainy day in Key West. This place is really neat with small theaters and a cozy feel.

I see the tropic is for sale and I would suggest that anyone who has not been get there soon. Great cozy feel in the well decorated lobby. I love the fact that you can purchase and enjoy a nice bottle of wine and some snacks while enjoying a movie. Bring your friends have a drink or two.

Hey Steven, Thanks for your kind note about Tropic Cinema. But don't worry -- the large building which houses the cinema was recently sold, but the Tropic has a lease until 2037 and I hope we'll see you many times between now and then. Thanks for catching a movie at the Tropic.

All the great comments on the Tropic Cinema are true. One additional point to mention:

Do not park your car before buying tickets to the Tropic Cinema. They will give you a ticket for free parking at the Post Office Parking lot about 500 feet away.

I'm never sure if watching a film is something worth doing when on a short holiday somewhere. However, our time at Tropic Cinema was an experience in and of itself. The atmosphere, care, and experience is well worth it. We look forward to watching a film here again the next time we are in Key West!
