This is the kind of thing that I love! A beautiful, immaculately maintained mansion featuring beautiful art, furnishings and with a rich history, associated with the Du Pont family.

If you live in Delaware like I do you then you already know how important the DuPont family was to this area. This was one of their estates and one of several they eventually donated to the public as a museum. It’s worthwhile to visit...More

This 77 room mansion build by Alfred I. du Pont for his wife, showcases the majesty of a by-gone era. There is the largest formal French gardens in the US, but it was a rainy day and we all stayed inside. I would love to...More

This recently renovated estate stands out from other mansions in that it felt warm and inviting -- a home (albeit an incredible home) instead of just a showplace. Be sure to take the shuttle garden tour and also the house tour. The docents love their...More

By all means take the guided tour in the house and ride the shuttle around the gardens. The statues are gorgeous and gardens are perfectly manicured. The entire house and contents were donated so the guided tour gives much more explanation of all the contents.

I don't know for sure but there is no food there. As I recall they do have tickets so I would imagine that they would allow you to go out and return. Best to confirm with them to be sure. Jo-Ann
