The area itself is very cool. Transport back in time and also get a sense of feeling like Indiana Jones!! The treasury structure doesn't disappoint and the walk down the Siq trail is truely awesome. Bring tons of water and be prepared to fight off all the local peoples trying to sell you stuff all the time.

Petra itself, the site, is absolutely stunning. I would recommend that if you have the chance, every one should see this once in their life. Definitely a bucket list item.
That being said, there are hundreds of donkeys, camels, and horses on site for tourists to pay to ride them. These animals are severely abused and not properly cared for. I witnessed dozens of them being beaten with chains and forced to carry tourists (sometimes 2) that are much too heavy for them. Throughout the entire site, I did not see one single vessel of water or any food for them to eat. They are outside all day in extreme heat, being overworked and are severely dehydrated.
Absolutely, go visit Petra! Please do not support the animal abuse.

Petra is really an amazing site to see and a place that all travelers should try to go. The Treasury and Monastery are amazing (how did they carve those by hand!!) but there are so many other things to see as well, and the setting is beautiful. We were just amazed at the colours of the rock in the area.
We had two days (three nights) to stay here and that was good. I suppose you could fit most into one day but it would be exhausting. It was June and it was very hot, so we started at 6 am and ended by 1:00. The afternoon heat was intense. It was cooler in the morning and much less crowded - so many more people arrived around 10 am. The Treasury, of course, is beautiful and at 6:30 am you can have it to yourself. The Monastery is also amazing and the hike up the stairs is not hard as long as you are in reasonable shape. We wanted to do the “back-door” hike but that was closed this summer.
We also did the Al-Khubtha hike to the viewpoint over the Treasury (signs point the way) and the hike to the High Place of Sacrifice (which was the hardest, steepest one) as well as explored the main trail. We walked about 17 km each day. The walk back to the visitor centre is the worst – uphill and in the hot sun. There were many exhausted looking people coming back. (An inexpensive shuttle from the top of the siq to the visitor centre would be a very welcome addition, I’m sure.) Just be sure that if you are doing a lot of the hikes in the site that you save energy for that last walk. There are electric e-buggies available from the visitor centre to the Treasury and back for an additional cost. I had a broken bone in my heel and so the second day I used this to come back up to the top which saved a lot of walking – I think it was about 35JD for both directions and tickets could be bought at the ticket office or at the actual golf carts in cash if you only want to go one way.
We did not use a guide but read about Petra before we went and after. The signs that are on site are faded by the sun – it would be really nice if they could be replaced. The museum is new looking and had a lot of information which was interesting and helpful and so it is worth going to.
Practical stuff: Water and snacks (ice dream, chips, chocolate bars) are available on site. We did not try the restaurants. Washrooms were scattered around as well - the ones by the tombs/theatre were the cleanest. We wore sport sandals, and this was fine – hiking shoes are not necessary, just make sure you can walk a ton in whatever you wear. The heat was crazy and most tourists (male and female) were wearing shorts.
Just a note: although we loved Petra, we were dismayed at the number of Bedouin children in the area with no supervision or trying to sell things instead of being in school. We saw lots of boys seriously fighting (one tourist even tried to help a little guy who was being pummelled) and even throwing rocks at each other’s heads. The salespeople were relatively friendly and generally easily took no for an answer but, also, going early in the morning meant most of the booths were still closed and so we avoided the constant sales pressure (another great reason to go early).

We were here for 3 full days. Day 1: monastery and trails off of the main path and petra at night. Day 2: rest legs day: castle, little petra and museum. Day 3: high sacrifice trail-up main way, down the back way. If you have the time, I recommend having a rest day in between. Going at least twice is a must-go early each day. It would be overwhelming to be there for only 1 full day.

Reaching the speechless peak of a mountain and finding a local playing a traditional Jordan theme it's something rare to find, I got pleased traveling Solo and meeting local driver Waleed and 3 others people's that I didn't know before at the beginning that had give us the best experience driving from Amman to Petra and having a night in Wadirum to become like a family, Waleed provides us with all the need to make this trip as pleasure as it could be and the best part he give us "hi five" from time to time which I stared to call it "give me energy". Thank you Waleed and all your connections to make it an amazing trip 🙏

Hello! We will be traveling to Petra with our children (9 & 11) and I wanted to know if it is possible to visit Petra and then stay on for the night show? Or would it be better to arrive early, and then have a break at the hotel before returning for the night show? Also - How many hours should we expect to be there during the day (without exhausting the children too much!) Many thanks!

You could stay on but we had a few hours break back the the hotel for dinner as it was a very long and tiring day with a lot of walking! The only irritating thing about coming back again in the evening was having to do the long walk back in again and in the dark. It was nice to do both though. The night time event doesn’t last very long. You’ll be sitting on the ground too so don’t wear something that you don’t mind getting dusty.

Chi ci potrebbe aiutare? Grazie dei suggerimenti! Tommy.

We are looking at visiting Petra early next year. We will have our 2 year old and 3 year old with us.
Is it possible/advisable to see the main sights?
Cheers.

Aloha. Petra is awesome; there's a lot of walking.
You can hire a donkey, but with kids that little, I imagine you'll be carrying them on your shoulders/back. It is 30 min walk in, and a 30 min walk out, from the car park/main entrance to the first and closest (old, iconic, what you went to see) part of Petra aka 'the Treasury'. From the Treasury, there is 4-5 mroe hours of walking if you are keen!
We went in the sneaky back trail (starting at Monastery), with kids aged 8y and 11y, and we walked for 6 hours ending at the main entrance (one-way, no back-tracking). This was including a substantial amount of time for the ladies (Mrs and Daughters) on donkeys. They were knackered at the end, but it made it do-able and everyone loved Petra. It was worth it.
With kids that little, it is possible to take a pram to the closest feature of Petra (the Treasury) to the main entrance, and if you parked your pram at the Treasurey, you could walk with kids on your shoulders/back for a period of time around Petra, depending on how long you want to stay. You could hire a donkey or two instead if you think the kids will sit up and enjoy the ride.
Either way, you'll have to go slow and you could see a few of the main sights this way, including the Treasury; it would be an all-day activity and your little ones might get a bit over it, so you need to be aware of their limits.
Regards,
Simon
