- BluebellplasnewyddCardiff, United Kingdom1,939 contributionsWalk down to a never forgotten experienceThis narrow gorge takes you to the Petra you will have read about and seen in photographs. Going down from the entrance in the town is a long walk on a slight downwards slope. Coming back up after an exhausting day can be difficult although you can hire a buggy. Look out for the camel carvings and signs of the water ducts that suppled the city. It is fascinating and mystical. Allow about 30 to go down and 45-60 minutes return depending on how fit you are.Visited December 2022Written 20 December 2022
- Agata WWarsaw, Poland508 contributionsExceptional and stunningExceptional part of the Petra. Incredible structure and views almost every step. Uneven surface makes it even more interesting. Especially when you go through for the first time. For those who are not able to walk through it is possible to take a "golf" cart ride at extra (huge) charge.Visited October 2022Written 20 January 2023

Walking the length of the Siq is approximately 3/4 of a mile, and is a very nice walk. Leaving the Siq and first seeing Petra is absolutely amazing.Visited February 2023Written 13 March 2023
- zuvBucharest, Romania27,129 contributionsImpressiveThe first interesting part of the archaeological site. From the Visitor center to the entrance to this impressive canyon, you have to walk about 2.5 km (there are a lot of locals who offer mules for rent). The canyon is slightly more than 1000 m long and ends at the foot of the impressive Treasury. The vertical walls of red stone are impressive. The road is flat and easy to travel. Very crowded, there are hundreds of tourists, some coming, others leaving.Visited March 2023Written 20 April 2023

It is quite amazing and has many spectacular features. It's around 1.2 km (1 mile) long. The Siq was created by the natural splitting of the mountain. By the way, you can have a return trip on the golf cart if your legs are weary, it's quite inexpensive.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 August 2023

Using my Jordan Pass, I began my visit here. There are locals asking me if I wanted to ride their camels, decided to walk to the Treasury. There are huge boulders, canyons, narrow paths along the way. Took photos and periodically rested.
Electric Car: The one-way fare is 15 dinars per person or about US 21! Quite expensive for a short ride, my legs were happy!

The main passage to the ancient city wasn't created by man, but by nature itself. This spectacular, winding gorge, created by natural rock formations and leading visitors through cliffs up to 200 metres high that artfully shield the sunlight, forms a dramatic entrance to Petra's most iconic site, the Treasury.

The Siq is the natural cleft in the rocks with steep sides and a sliver of blue sky above that runs for around 1km until it opens up into the city with the iconic view of the Treasury ahead. There are carvings and an ancient water channel to admire along the way which gives an excuse to stop frequently on the uphill return from the visit. Unless you are fortunate enough to go very early you will have to share the narrow path with noisy tour groups, squeeze into the sides to let golf carts pass and even jump out of the way of barely controlled horses and donkeys carrying tourists who have come to somewhere that is beyond their health and fitness level (or are being rushed to fit in a too brief visit by their travel company).
Despite the provision of rubbish bins every few metres there are still people who are too lazy to dispose of their bottles and packets responsibly. Reviewers who blame the Jordanian government for this have missed the point.

It is the walk down the narrow gorge with its towering natural sandstone cliffs that really adds to the overall experience of visiting Petra.
Along with the colourful striations in the sandstone you get to see small carvings to allow for worship of the local gods and the gully that was carved to supply running water to the city below.
Take some decent shoes as the walk back up is a fair treck and the the path can become muddy and slippery if it has rained which was the case when we visited.

So beautiful. We saw it a little bit wet from rain and it was even more beautiful! What an amazing path to the Treasury.

Can i hire a carriage at the ticket office area to the Treasury
PadreNZ

Not at the ticket office, once you get down just beyond it. The carriages are very close to the start of the track and they will take you to the treasury, you can also go further right to the steps to the monastery.

Is it required to be experiended in horse riding when we would go by horse?
Muriel_and_Lisa
Brisbane, Australia14 contributions
You won't need to be an experienced horse rider because the locals will either walk the horse or ride alongside you. Be careful to very clearly negotiate a price for the ride AND for the tip before you start because some horse/camel/donkeycarriage operators can become intimidating at the end of your ride if they believe the tip should be bigger. It is important to be very clear about where you want to go before you get started so you aren't taken or led off the track to 'see another site'. Although some of the operators can be persistent, they will usually leave you alone if you are polite but firm. Also, the operators will be keen for you to buy a ride to the Monastery (the highest site at the very end of the track), but they often refuse to let you ride down from this point because it is more difficult for the animals to bring you back down again.
