Considering the importance of this site I was pretty astounded how badly the site/ tours are managed. A “guide” of limited knowledge speeds groups around the site sharing minimal information. First off a museum full of dusty relics with information only available in Arabic - so we had no idea what we were looking at. Next a quick glance of the Jordan river and then the site of baptism. As the river has shifted this is just a dust mound - again with no explanation. Then off to a new church - goodness knows who uses it as there is a security checkpoint to pass before you can reach it - and finally the current Jordan River. You can almost touch Israel which looks all set up for pilgrims to immerse themselves in the river. The Jordan side looks neglected. We were then rushed back to the gift shop!!! where the guide seemed to have allotted 20 mins of our time. Until this site is accorded the respect it deserves, I’d give it a miss. Mount Nebo close by is the exact opposite - a wonderful site managed by the Franciscans.

1 hour drive each way to Wadi Rum in a quality car and 2 hours at the national park in a 4 x 4 vehicle. Very friendly drivers but commentary limited. Being on the back of the 4 x 4 in the open added to the enjoyment. Jacket and scarf recommended. Option to travel inside was available. Free drink of tea was a nice end to the experience.
