About
The "Parc National de Volcans" (or PNV as it's known by locals) lies along the Virunga Mountains, with 8 ancient volcanoes, which are shared by Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Just a short two hour drive from Rwanda's capital of Kigali, the park is a central location for exploring some distinctly Rwandan experiences. While a visit to the mountain gorillas is often at the top of visitor, the dramatic landscape also offers thrilling hiking and visits to the fascinating golden monkeys.

Incredible Experience
Jun 2021
This is an incredible national park that offers so much.

Upon arrival, they check documentation for COVID testing carefully and registration of your details is required. You are separated into groups and you meet with your guide for a briefing.

You then drive to a different location for the start of your trek. We did a gorilla trek one day and a golden monkey trek the next. Both of our guides were knowledgeable and passionate about their work and the importance of the park.

The trackers were amazing - taking us through the brush and finding the animals for us. They take their time and use machetes to cut away a path. Mask wearing was strictly enforced for the safety of the animals.

In our opinion it is necessary to hire a porter for the day. These young folks are awesome and help by carrying your gear and helping you to navigate the sometimes non existent trail. For $10.00 USD it is the best money we spent there and you are supporting a person from the community.

Visiting gorillas is a once in a lifetime experience and was everything we thought it might be and better. Being so close to these incredible animals is like no other experience in the world. We were so happy we came to Rwanda to see them.

Wow, amazing
Mar 2021
Volcanoes National Park is amazing. We had a gorilla trek and a golden monkey visit and both were brilliant. The way it is run, professionalism and knowledge of guides (Loyce was brilliant) and the surprisingly excellent cappuccinos on arrival were all appreciated. Come prepared with the right clothes and if it’s rainy you’ll get muddy. But it’s just the most amazing place. And in terms of covid management felt perfect under the circumstances and very safe.

Wonderful National Park and GREAT guide!
Jan 2021
I love this place! I spent one of the most beautiful mornings of my life with the golden monkeys-some of the most beautiful creatures imaginable.

My guide Ignatious was terrific and knowledgable and did everything he could to make my hike comfortable and memorable.

He even helped me find a mechanic when we discovered my rental car had sprung a leak-it was TOTALLY above and beyond anything I would have expected.

I very much look forward to going back on my next trip and hope one day to be able to afford the mountain gorillas trek (currently $1500 per person.)

Mountain Gorillas, An unique experience to feel for one hour as a member of the group
Nov 2020
What a great experience to to multiply so many impressions in a few days in a spectacular and healthy nature around the volcanoes, trekking through the very dense bamboo brushwood supported by professional and very knowledgable guides to finally come so close to the unique species of the mountain gorillas which obviously never made bad experience with human being and such allowing us to become for few moments a member of their life. Simply "Hard to Top it"!

A very well organised trek to see the gorillas with special Covid protections. A knowledgable guide, expert trackers and helpful porters all contributed to a special event.

Best National Park
Feb 2020
Volcanoes National Park is indeed the best for Gorilla trekking and adventure. Within close proximity to Kigali, supportive guides, staff and rangers and being home to the Gorillas, this park is indeed the best.

Great experience with the gorilla
Jul 2020
We did the gorilla trek with friends and family.

We split into 2 groups and we end up having different experiences: the group that wanted a "not so easy" trek had an easy one, saw a family of gorilla, but not as many and as well as the other group that wanted am "easy" trek.... but end up climbing the hill for 3 hours.

So, be ready for some unknown and flexibility. But at the end, all of us had a great an unique experience! The guides and the overall organisation is very good.

Visit To Believe It
Dec 2019
Volcanos National Park is situated on the North Western Part of Rwanda. It is in Musanze previously known as Ruhengiri. This place is around two and half hours distance by bus from Kigali. One can take a RITCO bus from Nyabugogo bus station of Kigali. The bus fare is around 2000 RWF.
Though the best time to visit the park is between July to September, the peak season, but I preferred to visit during end of December, the low season from December to mid-March. The regular cost of one Mountain Gorilla pass is $1500 but in low season one gets 30% discount on that, thus at $1050. But there is a condition for availing this discount. To avail this low season discount one has to book 3 days 2 nights in any other national park in Rwanda like Nyungwe National Park or in Akagera National Park. It is just not the booking; one has to produce a confirmed, paid booking receipt to be entitled for the low season discount. All the bookings of National Parks are done through Irembo website. It is one website in Rwanda through which all the bookings of National Parks and Rwandan visa are done. One has to have patience while booking through Irembo as often it gets too slow due to too much traffic. To ensure your preferred date of visit, please book at least 60/75 days before your visiting date else you may not get the booking.
Once a person has a confirmed Mountain Gorilla tourist permit, he should reach the park registration office latest by 7am. The park registration office is nearly 30 minutes’ drive from Musanze town. Then all the registered tourists for that particular day are distributed into 10/11 groups with maximum 7/8 members per group. Though there are nearly 450-500 mountain gorillas in the Rwandan side of Volcanos national Park but only 88 mountain gorillas are earmarked for tourist visit/access. Rests are either not friendly to human beings or reserved for research purpose. Though the cost for Mountain Gorilla pass in Rwandan side is the costliest among the three countries; Rwanda, Uganda and DRC (Congo); but it is highly professionally managed and well organized. One visitor is guaranteed to see the gorillas from the Rwandan side. Every Gorilla group is named like Susa group (second largest Gorilla group with 27 gorillas and 3 silver backs), Ntambara group (known for very aggressive among all the groups with 8 gorillas). So each group of tourists is assigned to one such Gorilla group and led by one guide. Each guide is in constant touch with the trekkers in the hills for each group. The trekkers keep intimating the respective guides on the movements of gorillas and accordingly the guide takes the tourist group to the assigned Gorilla group. Once the registration of tourist is done, assigned to one Gorilla group and a guide, the group drives down to the base of the Volcanos National park hill. And from there they trek into the forest on foot. Every tourist must have a full-sleeve rain gear, cap to protect from rain/sunrays, gloves to protect their hands and shoes which can withstand muddy as well as hilly slops. It is advisable to use a protective glass for eyes. Though one can avail a porter for carrying their bag or helping them while moving inside the forest but one has to ultimately ensure he/she can move freely of his/her own.
Once one sees the Gorillas from such close quarter, one will forget all the pain taken to reach that far or spending so much money just for that moment. It is really worth spending so much time and money for the expedition of a life time experience. Visit, enjoy and cherish rest of your life !

Amazing, life changing experience.
Feb 2020
Would highly recommend. We did a trek in Uganda and Rwanda, and the Rwanda experience was definitely more polished and you were able to get closer to the gorillas.
