An emotional experience

A very nice hike to discover the story of Dian Fossey. The trail is muddy but not very difficult. Our guide (provided with the permit at the park) was really interesting. We were lucky and we saw a gorilla from far away.

This is the Dian Fossey hike which is very hard!
Dec 2019
If you go on this hike only go during the dry season when it hasn't rained for several weeks. Otherwise it will be very very muddy making it much more difficult. You will be going up to 3000 meters so be prepared. Getting to the beginning of the hike is a 30 minute drive on dirt roads - african massage as they call it. Awe-inspiring when you get to the top and see the gravesites but be prepared with plenty of water. We did get to see gorialls on the way down which was an added bonus

I visited Dian Fossey Gorillas Fund in November 2019 after gorillas trekking. The center is very interesting and you learn a lot of informations about mountain gorillas and their environment as well as on other gorillas subspecies. The visit of the center is very interactive and didactic. Moreover, the fundation is very active in supporting gorillas, and you can heythem in continuing their actions
U highly recommend to visit Dian Fossey foundation

Interesting

Small, but interesting. They've broken ground on a new center, which I imagine will be much more informative, but this is still worth a visit if you're nearby

Visit the Karisoke Research Center BEFORE your gorilla trek
Sep 2019
The Karisoke Research Center (and the current Rwanda HQ for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Intl) is located in Musanze, about 20 minutes from the Volcanos National Park, where all gorilla trekking begins. There is no charge to visit the Center. We found the small museum about Dian Fossey's work and gorillas in general a perfect introduction to the trek we were going to do the following day. There are nice placards explaining everything regarding Dian Fosse, a recreation of her 'office" space featuring her personal desk and other personal items. The staff member at the reception desk was helpful and informative. There are also interactive video clips at various displays that show short video clips of gorilla behaviors and vocalizations.

Informative and well laid out small museum
Sep 2019 • Friends
A worthwhile visit - small but very well laid out museum explaining details regarding the gorillas, their conservation efforts and Dianne Fossey’s work with them. Provides an excellent introduction and background to a visit to the gorillas.

Educational little museum
Aug 2019
While the museum is small, there's some good information about gorillas in general (all subspecies), the mountain gorillas endemic to Volcanoes National Park (and surrounds), and Dian Fossey and the research she did. The exhibits are nicely displayed, and the placards are informative. The staff member at the desk was also helpful and friendly.

I recommend checking out the museum if you're at all interested in Dian Fossey and/or gorillas.

This is a small exhibit but quite informative. If you’re in town and have time, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Adventure seeking amongst paying respects...

This review is for the trek that leads to the Dian Fossey Grave Site in Volcanoes NP, and not the Research Centre in Musanze.
We knew that we were up against it, with the torrential downpours the previous night, so sinking muddy trails would put us back a couple of hours. After registering at HQ it's then a difficult drive on made up roads that barely exist for about 20 minutes, then acquiring walking sticks and/or a porter at the start line. Rain can be common in this area so wearing wellies that overlap your trousers was a good shout, though a few people wore hiking boots but struggled with jumping ants trying to sneak into the ankle openings. The beginning of the hike was fine passing villages, families and cattle, but then things get worse with the trails becoming really affected with mud. Sinking boots in mud proved difficult and heavy to take further steps, but hey what a buzz!
We reach the grave site with many memorials and several locations of cabins and amenities that don't exist anymore. Glad to see DF was laid to rest beside her true friend 'Digit' and other colleagues. We spend time here to take photos, imagining 'what if' scenarios, and then to a packed lunch break in a nearby hut.
Then time to trek down which was probably more difficult than going up. Must admit that I slipped a couple of times, so then thought the time has called for a porter midway through the activity. The porters are worth every cent of the 10 usd as hire fee. As they help with your belongings, push and pull you when needed, and are by your side if your struggling mentally or physically. All in all the whole round trip took 6 hours and 20 mins, but we heard if the terrain wasn't so muddy it probably would of took 3-4 hours. What an exhilarating challenge that's definitely not for the average beach person but if you enjoy moderate to difficult levels of outdoor feats then sign right up. Also a big thank you to Dian Fossey, because without her, all these activities in the national park would not exist which means no legacy or infrastructure, therefore no tourism..

Since you can’t visit the original research center, this is a great place to visit. So much information about the gorillas and Fossey.
