About
As you visit Umuzabibu Mwiza, as seen on CNN African Marketplace in March 2019, witness firsthand this remarkable project and meet the women as they participate in the age old craft of spinning yarn from the fleeces of their own flock of Merino sheep. Using only hand tools and spinning wheels, discover how the women create organic yarn and dye it naturally with native plant materials such as cosmos petals, onionskins and eucalyptus leaves. After your tour, you will have an opportunity to purchase Handspun Hope yarn and hand knit products. We are certain you will find the perfect Handspun Hope keepsake to take home from your trip to Rwanda!

Hopeful Hands
Oct 2020
This is an amazing Center to visit and shop. This Center employs 123 women who have been marginalized and/or traumatized from the genocide. They are now gainfully employed using their amazing artistry and skills to produce beautiful products using yarn that they themselves have spun, dye and knit from. The local plants found on the grounds of this amazing place is a sight to see. Flowers, leaves and various seeds including avocado can found on the property from which the "expert dyers" use to turn raw merino wool into brilliant color palettes of pinks, orange, yellows, gold and many more. Some of the women are expert in knitting and some are expert in felting. You will be awestruck when you see the beautiful garments and felted animals that have been crafted by these " artisans hands". I also had the pleasure of visiting the " rabbit habitat" where angora rabbits are raised and sheared for their angora fibers, also used to make sweaters.
This is a place you will want to visit and experience for yourself to see the amazing talents of women who have a dark past but are living a life reflective of a bright hopeful future. Many thanks to the Founder and Country Director for their vision and commitment in making this a wonderful place for these women to heal.

Lovely Place to Be Around Strong, Beautiful Women
Jul 2019 • Solo
This was such an absolutely wonderful experience for me. I got there at around 9 am and was welcomed by Christina. She gave me a tour from the start of how these beautiful yarns are completed. The ladies are designated in different areas for the completion of the yarn. One lady has been employed since the beginning of this project. The ladies do not mind when I took their pictures and when I have my pictures taken with them. All of them has a smile on their face, especially when I speak to them with my little Kinyarwanda words. I think they appreciate that I learned some of their words. I am truly amazed how patient and confident they are to put these yarns together. I had a nice time sitting down with the ladies who are knitting either a blanket or a sweater. I brought my own needles and knitted with them as we made up songs about our names. It was so much fun as these ladies sang along. One lady wrapped me in one of the materials so I can blend in with them with their colorful skirts. This place has a small shop where you can purchase the finish products. It is a little pricey but I personally think it was worth it. I had an enjoyable day! It would be appropriate for any women to visit this place wear a dress or a skirt.

Priceless Experience
Jul 2019 • Friends
If you are in Musanze, you must visit Handspun Hope (known locally as, Umuzabibu Mwiza). The center exceeded my expectations! Not only do you get to learn about the step by step process of what goes into making handspun yarn, but you also support the lives of 120+ at-risk women by touring and the opportunity to purchase their products in their local store (or online). This center facilitates counceling programs for all of the women, as well as educational support for their children. No one else is doing what they're doing in Rwanda! Go visit - you will not be disappointed!

P.S. New directional signs will assit you in finding your way to the Center. :)

A true testament to the strength of women!

What a wonderful day spent with the women and staff! You can see the passion in Diana and Simon for their Centre and the hundreds of happy faces of the women working there! They were all so welcoming and happy to have you involved - I even got the chance to join in helping with the yarn based activities which was amazing!

They have done such amazing things for the women of Rwanda and I got the chance to speak with their wonderful counselors and learn about how they support women in health, wellbeing, schooling for their children as well as employment! What this does for the community is immeasurable!

Please support this wonderful Centre in any way you can!

What a wonderful place to visit
Jan 2019 • Solo
Had a wonderful time on my visit. The ladies are just beautiful inside and out and the organization is truly inspiring! I left with an appreciation of the old craft of spinning as well as knitting. And who couldn't be in awe over the cute bunnies they also shear to incorporate Angora fibers into their yarns.
