This was our first stop on a 12-course Scotland/Ireland golf trip. I’m not sure how to feel about this golfing experience. I’m glad we played it but I won’t be making any plans to play it again. The course itself was ok… nothing great compared to some of the other Scottish courses. Starter was friendly and welcoming. The club itself did not feel particularly welcoming. They take your money as a visitor and make sure you know that you are not a member. No opportunity to have a post round pint unless you get dressed up and join them for lunch. Happy to have checked this off the list but I felt much more at home, welcomed, and appreciated in the other courses we’ve played.

Just a quick review to say how easy and straight forward Claire and Joanna have made my booking and upcoming visit. Both incredible polite and helpful. Now looking forward to playing this amazing course next week. Incredible staff really do make a difference, great job.

Eight golfers of various handicaps from 6 to 20 got to play Muirfield, it was the best golfing day I have ever had. A nice welcome on arrival, followed by 4 hours on a brilliant golf course. The experience was taken to another level having Kevin the caddie with us, his guidance around the course enhanced the day. The course is not easy but totally fair and in perfect condition. Stayed for the meal afterwards a lovely roast dinner.

What a day, cannot wait to go back, also played Gullane 1 and 2 along with the Glen all good courses with warm welcomes and good golf, but muirfield was head and shoulders above every other course.

Firstly a big thanks to George, the starter, for his warm welcome on our arrival.

We had, like most, heard some concerning stories about the visitor experience, so we were a wee bit nervous about what faced us when we walked through gates in the morning.

These were dispelled immediately by George’s friendly and genuinely warm greeting, which got our day off to the best possible start.

Thanks also to Joanna in the office for arranging the game at such short notice and Kevin, the afternoon starter, for his help and advice.

They are all a credit to the club.

As for the golf...

We had taken advantage of the lack of tourists coming to Scotland this year and played Carnoustie, The Old Course and Turnberry before playing here.

Of the four, Muirfield is the best golf course by far.

The clockwise/anti-clockwise design makes every hole a different challenge in terms of the wind, and the variety of holes ensures you must pull every club from the bag over the 18 holes.

Muirfield also has the greatest collection of Par 3s I have played on any course, anywhere.

The experience wasn’t even spoiled by some busybody older member who couldn’t help but approach us at the 10th to hurry us up, despite the fact we were will within our time.

A little bit of understanding that visitors to the course are likely doing this as a once in a lifetime experience, and won’t ‘run’ round the course like they will wouldn’t hurt, would it?

We did all have a giggle later on, however, when they themselves fell a full two holes behind at the 15th.

I would also highly recommend partaking in the lunch if you get the chance.

The service is outstanding and the food is delicious.

Summing up...

Carnoustie is undoubtedly the ‘hardest’ golf course I will ever play - too hard in fact, particularly in a high wind.

St Andrews is all about the ‘experience’.

Turnberry is much more dramatic and has many more holes that give you goosebumps when you stand on the tee.

Muirfield, though, is definitely the best - and truest - test of golf.

Lovely course to play a challenging round of golf. Joanna in reception and my caddie have been very good and supported me to play a great round of golf. Club facilities were down due to a complete renovation of the club house.... but almost finished. Thanks very much

Our first time in Gullane and we walked up towards the golf course. Went through the gate and wanted to walk along edge towards the beach. Advised there was no path and that we should go back the way we came. Google map showed a path! We left and walked through village to next gate- which was at the other end of the golf course and there was a path. How unwelcoming is that!

After 3 tough weeks playing in Ireland we moved onto Scotland and had booked at Muirfield.
Prior to leaving Australia we received documents about expected visitor behaviour at Honourable Company. Really expected that our shoes and tie knots would be inspected etc, but got a massively friendly welcome and introduction upon arrival.
Windy like you wouldn’t believe, 1st off and got around in 3&3/4 hours and then enjoyed the dress up lunch the day before the clubhouse renovations close the main kitchen.
Great exper At a cost but recommend the day, they are trying hard to regain their reputation and THe Open.
Tough course and wind made it nearly impossible on front nine.

One expects an Open venue to be good and I have never been disappointed, Every time I have played Muirfield I have enjoyed the challenge in new ways and my rating of the course increases. This time on a sunny autumn day with little wind the course was in tip top condition and I, my friends from USA and my wife had a memorable experience.
At the time of writing, (Oct 18) extensive work upgrading aspects of the clubhouse was in progress, but from the time we were greeted at the entrance the Club had measures in place to ensure a good service to visitors. While not be able to present the full range of choices as in the past, the catering, was excellent and the staff looked after us immaculately.
Albeit expensive, I do not hesitate to recommend golfers add Muirfield to their bucket list

This is something for the golfing nerd. High expectations that were met. Difficult course but great fun and the clubhouse is a must!

The Home of the Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers is truly a special place for a number of reasons. Of course the golf course os spectacular where they have hosted The Open numerous times, the Ryder Cup, The Walker Cup and many Scotish golf tournaments. A classic links course that is challenging, in percent condition and scenic. For those who value history a walk around the clubhouse is like being in a golf museum with things like Old Tom Morris' golf ball, ancient clubs, pictures and one of the copies of the original rules. I highly recommend the traditional golf day of 4 ball in the morning, lunch with the members, followed by 2 ball in the afternoon. I will cherish my memories of Muirfield forever and hope someday to have the privilege to visit again.
