About
Located along the Golden Circle route, Kerid Crater is an otherworldly volcanic crater lake that is known for its blueish-green waters, surrounded by striking red rock and lush vegetation. Enjoy a scenic stroll around the crater and venture down the trail into the crater itself. There's a small bench for you to sit and take in the view, which is exceptionally stunning at sunset. In winter, the lake freezes over and becomes a popular spot for ice skating.
A small fee is required to visit the crater, though the entry is typically included in tour packages of the Golden Circle. – Tripadvisor

- xmichelle646xWorld11 contributionsBeautifulLike a few people have said a small fee to enter we paid 400 Iceland korona each, you can walk all the way around the top and then go to the bottom to the lake, when we visited the lake was frozen so we could walk all the way round it at the bottom and on the top so was very lucky. If you love a photo as you can see with mine on a clear sky it's lovely to see the sky change colour we visited around 3/4pm. Enjoy.Visited January 2020Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 January 2020
- Jordan LeanneCalgary, Canada17 contributionsEasily overlooked, but was special to see something different in IcelandWe added Kerid in as a stop on the route between Selfoss and Laugarvatn as we wanted to see a range of features and landscapes on our trip. Though this was the only 'natural' place we visited which we had to pay an entrance fee at, there was no complaint at paying as the pathways were well maintained and there were areas marked out for conservation so it was good to see how the fee contributes to the experience. We walked a lap around the rim of the crater which gave us fantastic views of the nearby area, and an deceptive view of the crater below. The info boards at the top were also great to read. After walking to the bottom of the crater we found the pool/lake thinnly frozen. There were people skimming stones across the ice which made an unearthly echo! It was so different to compare the scale of the crater from the bottom- so almost two different experiences. This is a fantastic stop for any visit!Visited October 2019Written 18 February 2020
- Emily BDoncaster, United Kingdom14 contributionsEntrance fee for a 10 minute visit...This place is beautiful, and unique. I have never seen anything like it. However, I find it a bit odd to charge an entrance fee when people are literally just stopping by for 10/15 minutes. Especially when the weather is very windy and cold, people are not going to be here for long. I understand having to maintain the area but maybe a fee could be for parking and it could be a smaller price for a short time and increase with time, for those going for a longer visit. I do still recommend visiting as it is truly one of a kind.Visited February 2020Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 February 2020

Nothing special. Was expecting more. One walks around the rim of an old volcano now filled with water. If you look at photos you’ve seen it all. No interpretive signs. Too many other exciting things to do. In the area The entrance fee (450isk) was not great but not worth it.

Main car park closest to the crater was full so had to double back down the road to a secondary overflow car park constructed down a recently constructed gravel road which left a slightly further walk to the crater. Annoyingly you had to walk all the way along the recently constructed wire fence to the entrance booth & you had to do this again on the way out. So not as convenient. In terms of the crater itself, I walked all the way around it but if you are lazy or pushed for time, I’d just go & view the crater from the end to the left of the entrance (as you face the entrance) as I thought that was the best view of it. 450isk entrance, parking is free.

There is an entry charge at this crater, but your parking is free. The parking lot can be very crowded though. Easy walking trail. You start at the top of the crater and can then walk around the entire crater and down into the crater and then around the crater's lake. Lots of photo ops. Pretty easy walking as well. Highly recommend.

The teenagers stayed in the car after a long day of shopping and sightseeing in Reykjavik, too exhausted.
The crater was a worth the quick visit and minimal entrance fee.
It is a beautiful place but not the highlight of an Icelandic adventure.
If you have some spare time, maybe 1/2hr to walk around the rim and then down into crater its a convenient stop or break of journey between Reykjavik and the golden circle.
When I return to Iceland I would not be visiting again.

We came here for a short stop
The hike to the crater is short, however, the path is uneven and there are places that are steep and some stupid tourists stand at the edge for ventures....just waiting for a mishap to happen..there are no fences along the walkways...
This is not a good place to hike for people with mobility issue
The bottom of the crater is filled with green water along with the lava rock which makes this place quite scenic
You can hike down to the bottom of the crater with stairs but nothing spectacular to see

So this summer was the first time I had the chance to visit the Kerid crater and whilst it could be considered a "short stop" it is very much a worthwhile one! How often can you say you have walked down a path of red lava rock to a blueish green lake situated in the crater of an ancient volcano???
The colours of this crater alone are fantastic, blues, greens, reds it is an artists palette in there. The walk around the crater is short, the whole visit could be done in say 30 minutes of which is a great opportunity to stretch your legs and see something unusual!
The entrance fee of 350ISK per person is cheap for what it is and if it goes to support the maintenance is totally worth it.

Busy car park when we arrived - small entry fee paid by card. We spent about 1/2 hour walking around the crater rim - a worthwhile stop to break up a journey with some good information boards.

We had expected more. Although most sites in Iceland are free, you had to pay an entrance fee for this one. For this price you get to see a single, small lake. It's beautiful, but no more than that. In bad weather it is not worth the trouble.

Beautiful, as with all the places we visited. Part of our self-guided Golden Circle drive/tour.
You do have to pay to get in. We enjoyed walking around at the bottom and probably spent about an hour tops.
Definitely recommend as part of the Golden Circle but probably not a destination by itself.

Worth a stop for a unique sight. 450kr charge per adult, kids free. You can walk all around the rim and down to the bottom of the crater without much difficulty. Worth it for the views and photos!

Max 30. Stopping for photography. And on a day where the water is reflecting the light you will want to gaze. Enjoy

What time does Kerio crater close? We plan to visit after our evening visit to the Secret Kagoon and probably won’t make it till after 10 pm.

Depending what time of year you are going, it could be too dark to see much. Kerid is on private property and is open to the public for a fee. I would respect that and only visit during their hours. Visit their Facebook page as the hours are listed for their different seasons.

Hi! we are headed to iceland in a few weeks and I see that many people say Kerid Crater was not as impressive as other sites... We are active and like to hike. What areas would you suggest that are "must see"? Thank you for sharing any thoughts and suggestions! We are only there for 2 days and we want to make the most of it! Thanks, again, Lauren

Hi! Hike up to Glymur! It’s close to Reykjavík and it’s beautiful (and it’s Iceland’s second highest waterfall)... or hike to hveragerði which is the natural hot spring about 25miles away from Reykjavík. It’s about 45 minutes each way and many say its better than the blue lagoon, and FREE! The crater is very boring but if you’re already going along the golden circle you might as well stop but sadly it’s nothing special. Good luck & have a blast!!!!

Hello. The crater is part of the golden circle route, the first time I did a coach tour & last time I went by car, the advantage of having a car is you can stop as long as you like, although the tours are really good too. We did see some cyclists, but it is a fair way from Reykjavik, so guess how far you consider ok to cycle, for me I'd go the car route. The scenery is beautiful all over Iceland, so am sure you will love it whichever way you decide to go. Have a fab time!

Thanks for the informative review. We have rec different perspectives on what time to arrive to see the geyser. Similar to your thoughts, we want to see it at the best possible time. What time would you advise to be there?

In this time of the year, there is daylight until 22pm, so you can see it anytime until that hour.
But since is so close to Reykjavik, go about 17pm, there should not be there many people and you can do perfect pictures.

Bonjour,
