About
Laugarvatn Fontana is composed of a series of interconnected baths and steam rooms that complement each other to create a healthy, natural and unique spa experience.Three steam rooms, collectively called GUFAN, have been built over a natural hot spring that has been used since 1929. The temperature of the steam varies depending on the temperature of the hot spring and weather, usually between 40°C (104°F) and 50°C (122°F). Humidity is very high in the steam room cabins. Grids in the floor of the steam rooms allow guests to hear and smell the boiling natural hot spring underneath, creating a natural and totally unique experience. Next to the steam room is YLUR, a Finnish-style sauna. The temperature is between 80°C (176°F) and 90°C (194°F), with a lower humidity than the steam room having a big window facing the lake of Laugarvatn. LAUGA, SÆLA, and VISKA are interconnected outdoor mineral baths that vary in depth, size and temperature. Some areas are suitable for relaxation and others offer space for movement and playfull moments. Stone artwork made by Icelandic artist, Erla Thórarinsdóttir, enhance each visitor’s experience. VISKA, the hot tub, is built at a slightly higher level than the other baths, providing a panoramic view of the beautiful surroundings while the healthy water nourishes both body and soul.Completing the ensemble are VATNIÐ and STRÖNDIN — the lake and the beach. Visitors will reach VATNIÐ through a gate. STRÖNDIN has warm black sand, which has been shown to be beneficial for those suffering from arthritis and other joint illnesses. VATNIÐ provides an opportunity to cool down between visits to GUFAN and YLUR, a temperature shift that is both healthy and strengthening

Convenient Location for a Unique Activity
I heard about this place from a travel show and decided to check it out. The rye bread demonstration was informative, interactive, and an appropriate length. The guide was very friendly and informative. The rye bread and smoked trout we tasted at the end were very good, and there was plenty left for additional helpings. I recommend this unique activity, particularly on the way to or from popular places like Gullfoss.

Memorable hot pools and excellent service!
I would rate this over 5/5 if I could! After agonizing over which hot springs to go, I'm so glad we landed here! It was uncrowded and quiet, with gorgeous views, amazingly hot pools, and fantastic service. It was all very clean and the prices were so much better than what I'd seen for other locations. Also, you could even dip in the lake if you wanted to. They have sauna rooms too. This was a memorable stop that I would 100% go to again!

    Son and Father
My son and I had a fantastic time at the baths on our trip to Iceland. This is a unique experience I highly recommend folks to try out. Incredible that everything is heated by nature. My son told me on our return home that this was the best experience he had and will always remember it. The facility is very clean and well run. It was very nice to be able to order a drink and have it in the baths. If you're looking for some relaxation and an "Icelandic" experience, this is the place. My family also took the break making tour and that was also very good.

    Delicious and relaxing!
We did the baking demo and the spa admission. Highly recommend! The bread demo was interesting and the samples delicious. Then we enjoyed some relaxing time in the pools. This is a fairly small place with excellent views from the pools.

A must-do during Golden Circle trip
This is a must-do. We booked the Rye Bread making session. It is about one hour long. You learn about the geothermal baking method, and get to sample a bread straight from the "oven" buried next to the lake. The guide was informative and funny and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The bread was fantastic and served with delicious Icelandic butter and smoked trout which were fished from the lake on premises. Even my 18 year old enjoyed it.

    These were our favorite
We tried several baths and lagoons, and these were our favorite. Not overly crowded, excellent facilities, and multiple pools at different temperatures to choose from. Three steam rooms at different temperatures to choose from, also Very well run and laid out. Lastly, their bread tour is very interesting …and tasty.

Geothermal Bakery: An experience not to miss!
My wife and I went to the Geothermal Bakery at Laugarvatn and we absolutely LOVED the experience. It takes about an 1h - 1h30 on the whole thing and it is incredibly nice to see this culture of geothermal cooking stiil alive today. I strongly recommend!

Relaxing and a can’t miss stop!
We started the morning at the bakery where we learned about the geothermal cooking process and got to sample some delicious hot rye bread with Icelandic butter and a slice of smoked trout. It was amazing. Spent the rest of the day and most of the afternoon at the spa. It’s a lovely little spot with food and drink offered outdoors. The pools are different temperatures and there’s also geothermal saunas. A good 10 min in the steam room, then a 2 minute plunge in the cold lake followed by a soak in any of the geothermal pools is an amazing experience. So relaxing after days of hiking and camping in the cold and rain. Topped it off with some soup of the day and a slice of warm bread to conclude our visit. Definitely worth a visit and not nearly as crowded as some of the other popular spa places. They have shower and change rooms and provide towels and everything you need for your visit. Don’t miss this stop!

    So worth it!
We had a fabulous visit, after a month on the road - mostly at sea - the experience was incredibly restorative. On another trip to Iceland I have been to Blue Lagoon and while that had its own highlights this was a much more intimate and satisfying experience. And the rye bread! I'm now back home and looking for a geothermal vent so I can make my own...

    Go!!!
Lovely cool plunge in the lake, beautiful setting, fun and informative rye bread tour! I found the experience here more enjoyable than sky lagoon because you can visit the sauna and steam as many times as you like (with sky that’s limited to your 7 seven ritual time). It’s smaller and more intimate here which I like, too! Also the price point is much lower than sky.

I went with my two children (10 and 13), my mom and brother. It was so nice and quiet when we went. We had a 10:30 am booking and it was perfect. Just one other couple and another small family at that time. We also did the bread baking experience. My daughter got to dig up the loaf of rye bread from the lake shore which was a fun experience. The changing room was clean and had shampoo, conditioner, hair dryers etc for afterwards which was great. We also enjoyed the soup and bread lunch offer after our soak and enjoyed that as well. I recommend coming early. As we were about to leave after our lunch a huge group of high school age kids arrived on what seemed like a school outing.

Beautiful setting for a great spa experience. Sauna, hot pools, steam room and icy lake. Change areas clean and tidy. Scenery was outstanding, great views from the pools. Refreshments available too. Small area but worth the visit, highly recommend the bakery experience also. Thank you

We had the best time here. Arrived at 11 for the bread tour then stayed at the hot springs for hours. The bread is delicious, my 9 year old son said it is the best he has ever had. The cafe is comfortable with really good food. We had white bread and carrot ginger soup as well as mushroom soup all delectable. Once in the outdoor hot springs, there is an outdoor window to the cafe with drinks for adults and kids, and plenty of pool options and activities to keep everyone happy and relaxed. I especially enjoyed being able to access the lake. We went to the Blue Lagoon after, and my kids enjoyed being able to wear goggles and swim underwater here. Very laid back.

We were so excited to make the bread and place it in the ground for baking; unfortunately, that didn’t happen… Instead, we walked outside and watched the tour guide dig up the previous day’s bread from the ground. That was it. Nothing like you’ve seen on TV which was a total bummer.

On the bright side, our tour guide was a sweet Portuguese young woman who had a great sense of humor, and we enjoyed the bread with butter and smoked trout from the lake.

Recommendation: If you go, go in with very low expectations so you are not disappointed.

Overcrowded. Staff was more interested in there private conversations. Pools were hideous. This is not like Mythan.
Go farther north. Stay away from here or the Blue Lagoon. Tourist traps.

My 12-year old and I went to Laugarvatn Fontana on May 15 as we had a one day stay-over in Iceland coming home from Paris. We booked the bakery tour and the geothermal baths. The geothermal bakery tour was interesting. Not a long time spent on this, but it was interesting to learn about nevertheless. Then my daughter and I went straight to the baths. We had reservations as it was recommended, but it wasn't busy so we probably could have just been walk-ins. The facilities are very clean and updated. There are 4 large pools/baths with 3 or 4 different temps. We tried them all and they were so relaxing. If I had been there with my husband we probably would have relaxed with some drinks as well, but we only had an hour to spend there and I had to drive the rental car back to the airport. It was about half way on the Golden Circle trip and we made good time. Beautiful views and a lovely little place. The staff was pretty good although when we wanted to check out it was obvious that the young woman working the front desk was very overwhelmed with about 30 people who had just arrived on a tour bus and were trying to check in. But someone else stepped in and let us out quickly so we could be on our way. I would recommend and may go back when my husband and I visit some day.
