The beginning of our expedition to Antarctica!
Feb 2020
The Beagle Channel is a gorgeous peaceful body of water that is the perfect place to begin and end an Antarctica expedition. My wife and I boarded our expedition ship while our ship was docked in Beagle Channel on a beautiful February day. Before we set sail, we had great views of this beautiful channel. The waters were calm and the horizon towards Antarctica seemed to be endless. Once we set sail the waters remained calm and formed a gorgeous vision with Ushuaia in the background. We really appreciated the calmness once we were sailing in the notorious Drake Passage!

As we returned to Ushuaia after an amazing expedition, the calm waters of the Beagle Channel welcomed us and let us know that this part of our journey was nearing its end.

Sensational landscape and wildlife

Sailed along the Beagle Channel twice and it was breathtaking. Saw many types of birds, including penguins, and of course the landscape is gobsmacking.

We flew into the Canal descending in thick cloud to suddenly see this magnitude and magnificent place. The pictures say it all.

So wanted to do this

since school....60 years ago, I have wanted to sail up the Beagle channel....one of those iconic things.
Sadly it was thick mist for us but....just loved doing it.

History and Wildlife
Feb 2020
The Beagle Channel is a bucket list item purely because of the history of the place.
It was named after the ship HMS Beagle during its first survey of the southern part of South America from 1826 to 1830. However, it was the wildlife (birds and sea lions) that really thrilled us. We actually traveled the channel three times in our cruise ship (from Ushuaia to Cape Horn and back and then back out to Antarctica). We also ventured into the channel (as far as the lighthouse) on a catamaran wildlife cruise.

Stunning

Best experienced from a cruise ship, towering mountains, glaciers and if you are lucky marine creatures. Definitely a bucket list experience. We were also lucky enough to view the channel from the shore on a trip through the Tierra del Fuego National Park.

Don't miss it.

The Renowned Beagle Channel
Mar 2020
You may visit this either when entering or leaving Ushuaia on your cruise ship; if not a boat trip can be obtained from the pier head. This famous channel is a strait that forms the border between Chile and Argentina at its eastern end. This channel has been made famous by many explorers from centuries ago.

Leaving on a cruise - what an overture!
Mar 2020
Straight out from Ushuaia into dramatic snow capped mountains and glaciers. Saw3 whales. Sadly the calmness of BC may turn out to be a deceptive intro into the Drake Passage - which has a fearsome reputation! You might be lucky like us.

Excellent cruise ship experience
Feb 2020
We negotiated the Beagle Canal heading from Ushuaia to Chile. The scenery was spectacular--and we had already seen much jaw dropping scenery as we cruised in Antarctic waters. The passage was calm.
