We were in for a very pleasant surprise when we stopped at the Ngwenya glass factory and the little crafts village where it is located. Having. Seen Ngwenya glass in a crafts shop outside Melbourne before we left for South Africa we were delighted to find the full range of glassware on display right here in Johannesburg.

The crafts village is wonderful to wonder around in, either grabbing something to eat or drink at the crafts beer pub or watching the kids play in the great little playground.

A perfect destination for a lazy weekend afternoon...

This is a real assembly line - and they produce various items from wine glasses to fabulous art pieces! All the glass is recycled from people who collect it to sell to the glassworks. This is part of a craft shop area with interesting items.

Always something happening here - whether you just pop into the glass factory, or have a meal and a beer at Gilroys, you'll have to pop into some of the little craft shops as well. Joseph the beading genius has lots of little (and larger) things to choose from, and will make things according to order.

Pretty average venue, nothing too special. Great watching the glass blower making his wares and few good Stolls.

The glass factory has beautiful wares for sale and there is a glass blower who will happily demonstrate his skill. The factory is set in a complex of a restaurant, beer garden, ducks and duck eggs supplier and various other retailers. A pleasant outdoor place - very laid back.

I was invited here for lunch. The food and setting was lovely. Although the food takes long, the staff are friendly. It's a restaurant for the whole family. The Jacarandas lining the driveway are so beautiful. There is also a craft beer pub and little stalls to view and purchase some goodies.

A pleasure to look at. Nice touch to have the artist on site working and creating. A bit expensive but unique creations.

Brilliant little gem roughly 25 minutes travel from North cliff/JHB Northern suburbs. Just confirm that Food stalls and product stalls are on site. Brilliant handcrafted gifts, ranging from necklaces, leather goods, pet spoils, to handcrafted chocolates, jams, original Canvas oil and acrylic paintings. Etc etc etc. Either buy something to eat at the speciality food stalls, ranging from craft bread gourmet sandwiches, pastries and traditional Indian Samoosas. Or sit down at one of the eateries/coffee shops. Worth a visit, and HUGE CHEER and THUMBS up, it is Pet friendly, as long as poochie is well behaved, not aggressive and on their leash. Excellent hand crafted Internationally renowned Glass Factory on site. A nice laid back Platteland/Farm atmosphere.

We have been to the Ngwenya Village a few Times over the years, and usually have a great time. Sadly a bit disappointed this time.
Had lunch at Gilroys - ordered Eisbine - it was delicious, but no accompanying sauerkraut. Only after our asking about it did we get told that sauerkraut wasn't available that day, and received an extremely small portion of mixed vegetables as an alternative. (Not fresh vegetables - prefrozen).
Bought a Wedding gift at Ngwenya Glass, which we had engraved. Collection arranged and confirmed for the following week. *Firstly, it wasn't ready. * Then, the engraved date was wrong. (Thankfully opened the well wrapped gift before leaving the village).
Rather disappointed - not sure whether we'll bother to visit again in a hurry.
