Good exhibits, but the film and surprise ending are not to be missed. With views of the glacier lake and outstanding trails leading from the visitor center, this is an excellent place to spend an afternoon.

We stopped here to have our picnic, but there is no picnic area, only an expensive coffee shop close-by. The Visitor Center is not all that impressive. The kids had fun with all the NFS anniversary activities offered, but did not have the patience to sit through the film. The view of Portage Lake and the glaciers is actually better from the pull out just past the Visitor Center through the short tunnel and on the right side of the road just before the Whittier Tunnel entrance.…

Portage Valley offer so many wonderful experiences (hiking, camping, boat tour to Portage Glacier, etc.) but don’t forget to allow time to visit the Visitor Center. The Center offers a wonderful movie about the Chugach Forest, family-friendly displays and exhibits, and a wealth of knowledge from each and every Forest Interpreter. Just take time to ask them questions about the area and what you’re seeing—you won’t be disappointed!! …

The visit center is located just before the toll tunnel to Whittier and is a great place to stop while waiting for the tunnel to open in the right direction (once every hour). The visitor center has great displays on the natural features of the area. The center is located on Portage Lake surrounded by glacier covered mountains. It was calm while we were there and the lake was a perfect mirror of the scenery around it. There is also a nature trail nearby if you have more time. This is a great stop on the way to Whittier. …

This is a 'must do' when going to the Portage Glacier; easy access and wonderful national parks service staff prepare you for the wonder of the area. The displays are interactive and designed to go in as much depth as you like, or a light survey before heading out to the lake. The NPS offers a tremendous wealth of information and entertainment for the traveler, and needs to receive our support wherever there is a ranger or guide available.…
