170 reviews
Visit a pair of traditional markets in San Jose on a guided walking tour that explores local flavors, culture, and history. From a fresh cup of Costa Rican coffee to tropical fruits, you’ll sample the best of what’s in season here. It’s a great chance to see a side of the city that many visitors overlook, and walking around with a local guide means an insider perspective on life in San Jose.

I visited this market mainly to kill some time and have a look and why not, maybe even buy something if I found something nice and unique. The market was very quiet so all vendors had nothing to do and wouldn't stop talking to me even when I was saying I wasn't interested. And it's a lot of vendors, so after being nice to the first three and wasting like 15 minutes talking to them I decided I don't want to do that. All I wanted was some quiet time to observe myself but that was impossible. I had to try and avoid eye contact and rush out or I'd spend an hour there just listening to them talk and try to convince me to buy cheap, mass-produced souvenirs. I did find a couple of things I liked but the vendors were so pushy that I didn't feel like buying.

We visited this old market with a guide on a walking tour of central San Jose. It houses a large number of traders offering a huge range of products. We sampled a delicious tortilla and superb ice cream. Definitely worth a visit.

Sensory overload of junky trinkets and fast-talking vendors. Stall after stall of all the same thing. With the "Artesnias" we were expecting / hoping for even just a bit of local-made items, but not! Don't waste your time. The main Mercado is superior experience - mostly food, basic items, etc., but a few gems here and there - good for buying spices, coffee, etc.

Was pleasantly surprised to stumble across Rigo Shine Hammock shop. Brought two back with me. The other shop owners are helpful and will customize anything for you.
