We entered Golfo Dulce from our Uncruise ship with our expedition leader. Golfo Dulce is unspoiled. It appears to be so far off the beaten track that we only saw four other people during our time here. It has a beautiful beach with great snorkeling to see a variety of marine life including a hawksbill turtle. It has some paths, some of which are primitive and require some dexterity, that will lead hikers through a jungle of frogs, so many birds, beautiful vegetation, a river, and more. Truly an unspoiled paradise.

The national parks are the main attraction, but I found that there are some remote locations reachable by boat that get away from any crowds. There are a couple of eco-lodges, including Playa Nicuesa, that offer unique opportunities for jungle and gulf exploration. The gulf can sometimes be as calm as glass and other times have 2-3 foot waves. The water I experienced on the eastern shore of the gulf next to the Piedras Blancas park was warm and clean.

The snorkelling was good. Near the last snorkel it got a bit murky and it was hard to see. We had a yummy lunch on the island and it was a lovely beach.

Beautiful and serene. The water was warm and calm. I saw hundreds of dolphins on a dolphin excursion. Decent snorkeling as well. This was a beautiful place.

We are a family of 5 from Montreal, children’s age: 13, 8 and 4. We just had the most amazing time at Golfo Dulce Retreat and we recommend it with all our heart. It’s the perfect family vacation. Luxury cabins in the middle of the jungle, a two-minute walk from a spectacular private beach. In the same day, we were woken up by monkeys, and in the afternoon, dolphins swam around us while longboard paddling. You will stay entertained all day, one day you will be kayaking in the mangroves and the other day you are snorkeling with amazing corals and fishes! This is a perfect place for kids and adults for relaxation and adventure.
Our kids left completely amazed and … in love with the owners Chantelle and Simon as well as Katie, a biologist from Cambridge University, who taught our kids so many things about different species in the jungle. Let’s not forget about the food. We still can’t grasp how is it possible to feel like we’re eating in Italy, but in the middle of the jungle in Costa Rica!
We often say that we will return for sure to a place we loved so much, but at the end, we never do. I hope this time we will.

My wife and I enjoyed kayaking a bit on the Golfo Dulce as well as just enjoying the scenery from our hotel terrace. The expanse of water, the mountains in the distance, the mangroves, and the possibility of finding gentler, more protected areas are all nice features, as are the attractive beaches were saw in the area of Matapalo.

Puerto Jimenez itself is not worth any effort to reach, except it does provide ocean access to the magnificent Osa Peninsula. Our guide, Randall ?? was provided to us as part of a shore excursion (limit 7 people) included with our Windstar Cruise. We spent approximately 4 hours with Randall and in that time we saw Macaws, three types of monkeys (white-faced, howler and spider), African killer bees, caiman, turtles, a dozen different varieties of birds and a three-toed sloth. Randall has been guiding for about 20 years, so no time was wasted locating the wildlife and his expert use of his sighting scope provided great photos for persons with only smart phones as cameras. He also provided drinks and fresh fruit along the way. Windstar’s on-board naturalist, Diego Rodriguez, recommended this excursion as the best they offer in Puerto Jimenez, and our experience seems to have verified that fact.
